Karl Oloapu

Of course we did but my point was that they wanted some form of compensation and got it. The Titans won't let Pahulu go before 26. It's fine for Oloapu to leave, and not the end of the world if we don't get compensation. But it's annoying when other clubs demand it from us but we don't get anything in return when we let players leave.

In the end I want the club to be recognised as destination for youngsters to bring their potential out. We might lose some good youngsters along the way and it is disappointing that we seem to be one of the rare clubs that don't require something in return for the players we allow to leave. But I hope that long term it means that players and their managers appreciate that we're not going to stand in the way of youngsters progressing and that as a result we have a lot more joining us. Ultimately it's a boon if we have our development teams chock full of talent. It gives us a chance to earn some loyalty from them. And if we treat players well and even let them leave to progress when their paths are blocked here, it hopefully means if they do go on to big things they recall that we had their best interests at heart if we chase them later.

I agree with and understand all of that and think since Gus has taken over that we've earned that reputation which is why so many young stars sign with us in the first place.

We can still accommodate Oloapu's request as well as ask the Dolphins for something in return. It's not the end of the world to get no compensation, but it's annoying when we compensated Cronulla for Tracey and the Titans are holding onto Pahulu. If the other clubs were as accommodating as we were, then it wouldn't be an issue.

I think Gus' mantra the whole time has been anyone that doesn't want to be here or gets a better offer is allowed to leave. So at least he's been consistent with that.

The problem is the other 16 clubs don't have that same mentality and are more petty and cut-throat. Also as you pointed out we've gotten fuck all in these situations dating back to the past two decades.

Even when it came to Tracey, we had to give the Sharks a promising youngster in Michael Gabrael. If the Dolphins want Oloapu, give us a promising youngster in return like we had to with Cronulla.

Still pisses me off grubby Cronulla couldn’t just let Connor Tracey go play first grade somewhere

All true, but we are in the business of winning premierships, not preaching loyalty and wellbeing.

I thought Michael was the more talented one?

I don't tend to follow the careers of players we let go. But had the older brother been promoted to the NRL yet? I can't recall hearing from him.

If rumour is true no doubt KO has had a cruel run with his health, but also fair to say he has manipulated the outcome to suit his agenda. Was always a matter of when, not if he would return to Brisbane.
Didn’t have a lot of options when he chucked his toys out of the cot at the ponies. Was banned from moving to his preferred club, the fins, and most clubs baulked at the transfer fee. He either stood out of the game for a period or came to us.
Disappointing has ended this way but certainly not a surprise.
