Storm and Roasters rarely let anyone go that they want because they can work miracles with their salary cap..
The 3 years and the amount is the real killer..I still think it was worth having a shot at trying to turn Flanagan into a decent halfback considering what we had in our roster last off season.
It was a throw at the stumps and we missed sometimes they come off sometimes they don't.
As others have mentioned the major error was the 3 year deal.
Reminds me of the gag about the farmer looking to hire a lemon specialist to manage his orchard. He got several CV’s from backpackers with fruit picking experience but he really wanted a specialist. When he filtered it down to two candidates he brought them in for an interview and asked them: ‘What do you really know about lemons?’ The first candidate replied:Leyland P76
The salary cap is responsible for so many clubs poor roster management. It's ridiculous that clubs are forced into spending 95% of their cap and having to pay overs for players of lower quality. The salary cap is an archaic way of distributing talent and needs to be scrapped. Given how many weak clubs that are being propped up by the stronger ones it's time to actually just let them die out.
I can't find anything about us operating under a reduced cap after 2002. It's interesting though that the Broncos this season are similarly like the Bulldogs of 2002 except they have been allowed to shed players. Even though they won games by being over the cap like us in 2002 why were they not stripped of points fined & audited like us?A lot of that had to do with us operating under a reduced cap for a few seasons as part of the punishment for 2002.
But I agree with your point that the cap isn't working and the top teams should be losing more players than they are.
Great insights by hindsight Daley. You know Laurie, it didn't take me having great insight to not get blotto every weekend drop my dacks for everybody to see & pee on people's cars in the 90s like somebody else I could tell you about.Kyle Flanagan was given another shot to cement his spot at the Bulldogs when he was recalled into the halves for their clash with the Titans on Monday.
It was his first game since Canterbury-Bankstown’s 66-nil thrashing at the hands of Manly in Round 16. Prior to that he hadn’t been sighted in first grade since Round 9.
The 22-year-old has had a tumultuous 12 months. At the end of last season he was given the tap on the shoulder by the Roosters and released one year into his two-year deal.
Flanagan said at the time he was “shocked and disappointed” after being brutally axed.
But it wasn’t long until the Bulldogs swooped in and locked him in on a three-year, $1 million plus deal as new coach Trent Barrett began his Belmore rebuild.
However, with Flanagan failing to take control of an inexperienced Bulldogs side, league legend Laurie Daley has questioned whether signing the young half on a three-year deal was the right move.
Daley pointed out that champion clubs — like the Roosters — don’t let quality players walk and perhaps there were red flags that the Bulldogs missed.
It’s probably been a mistake to sign him for three years,” Daley told Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast.
“The Roosters and the Melbourne Storm, if they allow a player to walk you have to question why they are releasing them.
“Is there something wrong with his attitude? Do they not rate him?
“If they want to keep someone, and they tick all the boxes, they do not lose them.”
Flanagan’s Round 20 recall came at the expense of Lachlan Lewis. It’s understood the selection wasn’t based off form, but rather, an opportunity to start building for the future.
Lewis hasn’t been offered a new deal by the Bulldogs for next season, while it seems Barrett plans to persist with Flanagan.
He partnered young gun Jake Averillo on Monday night and with Matt Burton joining the club in 2022, the pair have the final five games to battle it out for the one halves spot up for grabs.
salary cap was not introduced to even talent was so clubs would no go broke .it is the draft that can do that and well all know what happened .The salary cap is an archaic way of distributing talent and needs to be scrapped. Given how many weak clubs that are being propped up by the stronger ones it's time to actually just let them die out.
Danny Williams was another Roosters reject lauded for his abilities.Hopefully we have learnt from our past mistakes. Napa was up there with the shittest signings we've made and then we doubled down with the second roosters reject in Flanno. No more please.
And he lost series he should have won too.Daley won couple SOO with the best players in the world and thinks is a super coach, LOL
Don't say that because we would then re-sign him on a 10 year $15m contract!I'm hoping flanno can play well in the blue and white for the rest of the year that way we can get rivals interesting in signing him
I could have sworn we operated under a reduced cap for a year or two after. I know players had to take a pay cut to get cap compliant but I thought we also had less to spend in the following seasons as part of the punishment.I can't find anything about us operating under a reduced cap after 2002. It's interesting though that the Broncos this season are similarly like the Bulldogs of 2002 except they have been allowed to shed players. Even though they won games by being over the cap like us in 2002 why were they not stripped of points fined & audited like us?
Elliott is on 480K a season plus 20K in use of a car. This comes from someone who helped negotiate his recent contract.Yeah but Elliot and Flanagan aren’t on mega dollar deals both are well under 400K per season I think if my memory serves!
Wtf $500k a season. His manager is a genius.Elliott is on 480K a season plus 20K in use of a car. This comes from someone who helped negotiate his recent contract.

Check my posts about Flanno from months ago when there were rumours we were going to sign him. I called it back then he was a dud and so did others on TK. It was clear to anyone who knows footy and saw Flanno play for the Chooks last year that he was limited to premeditated plays, had no vision and no running game. It was a shocking decision by TB to sign him.
