I still think it was worth having a shot at trying to turn Flanagan into a decent halfback considering what we had in our roster last off season.

It was a throw at the stumps and we missed sometimes they come off sometimes they don't.

Reminds me of the gag about the farmer looking to hire a lemon specialist to manage his orchard. He got several CV’s from backpackers with fruit picking experience but he really wanted a specialist. The salary cap is responsible for so many clubs poor roster management. It's ridiculous that clubs are forced into spending 95% of their cap and having to pay overs for players of lower quality.

A lot of that had to do with us operating under a reduced cap for a few seasons as part of the punishment for 2002.

But I agree with your point that the cap isn't working and the top teams should be losing more players than they are.

I can't find anything about us operating under a reduced cap after 2002. It's interesting though that the Broncos this season are similarly like the Bulldogs of 2002 except they have been allowed to shed players. Even though they won games by being over the cap like us in 2002 why were they not stripped of points fined & audited like us?

Flanagan is a huge dud but if he had of played well and killed it this year they would of said wow what a great move by the dogs signing this kid for 3 years at a bargain price....hindsight is a great thing. Kyle Flanagan was given another shot to cement his spot at the Bulldogs when he was recalled into the halves for their clash with the Titans on Monday.

It was his first game since Canterbury-Bankstown’s 66-nil thrashing at the hands of Manly in Round 16. Prior to that he hadn’t been sighted in first grade since Round 9.

The 22-year-old has had a tumultuous 12 months. At the end of last season he was given the tap on the shoulder by the Roosters and released one year into his two-year deal.
Flanagan said at the time he was “shocked and disappointed” after being brutally axed.

But it wasn’t long until the Bulldogs swooped in and locked him in on a three-year, $1 million plus deal as new coach Trent Barrett began his Belmore rebuild.

However, with Flanagan failing to take control of an inexperienced Bulldogs side, league legend Laurie Daley has questioned whether signing the young half on a three-year deal was the right move.

Daley pointed out that champion clubs — like the Roosters — don’t let quality players walk and perhaps there were red flags that the Bulldogs missed.

It’s probably been a mistake to sign him for three years,” Daley told Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast.

“The Roosters and the Melbourne Storm, if they allow a player to walk you have to question why they are releasing them.

“Is there something wrong with his attitude? Do they not rate him?

“If they want to keep someone, and they tick all the boxes, they do not lose them.”


Flanagan’s Round 20 recall came at the expense of Lachlan Lewis. It’s understood the selection wasn’t based off form, but rather, an opportunity to start building for the future.

Lewis hasn’t been offered a new deal by the Bulldogs for next season, while it seems Barrett plans to persist with Flanagan.

He partnered young gun Jake Averillo on Monday night and with Matt Burton joining the club in 2022, the pair have the final five games to battle it out for the one halves spot up for grabs.

salary cap was not introduced to even talent was so clubs would no go broke .it is the draft that can do that and well all know what happened .

the problem with the cap now ( and I’m not saying clubs are within it legit ) as it has grown so much , players can afford to take unders to stay or go to a good club . When the cap was much lower and the top echelon and average of salaries were lower , players couldn’t afford to as much stay for unders - hence why in bygone eras comps were more competitive and teams could get out of doldrums better

I could have sworn we operated under a reduced cap for a year or two after. I know players had to take a pay cut to get cap compliant but I thought we also had less to spend in the following seasons as part of the punishment.

Check my posts about Flanno from months ago when there were rumours we were going to sign him. I called it back then he was a dud and so did others on TK. It was clear to anyone who knows footy and saw Flanno play for the Chooks last year that he was limited to premeditated plays, had no vision and no running game. It was a shocking decision by TB to sign him.
