The guy is such an idiot that he left an easy trail for the police to find. Using his credit card to buy fuel for the outboard motor (which he couldn't start), bought a barrel and sand at Bunnings, and made phone calls that allowed police to track his whereabouts, including from the site where the barrel was found (he made it too heavy to pick up and throw into the river). Then he gave police information which totally contradicted what their records showed.
