Rightio gals and guys,

As many of you may know, I'm currently situated in Europe but thinking of moving back to Aus in the future.

But, I haven't lived there for many a year. Over 16 years to be exact. So, I don't really know Australia much anymore.

What do you guys think? Australia a decent enough place to bring up kids?

To paint a bit of background. I grew up in Sydney where my dad and bro still live. and my sis lives in Perth.

So the options are either Sydney or Perth.

I'm heavily leaning towards Perth mainly because I'm not a big city person and I think Perth is better set up for kids.

What do you all think? Is Sydney good for families? Safe?

Is this an ok thread to post Mods? Let me know if it isn't but just thought I'd ask

Brisbane...Def not Canberra! Elliot's moving there and your Mrs won't feel safe. In all seriousness for a family I would choose Perth. I loved Sydney when I was younger but super expensive for housing. Perth like Brisbane more laid back and less hustle and bustle than Sydney. Good luck.

Sydney is as it always is. It's perfectly safe if you move to the right area. But if you don't want city life then you're probably better off with Perth. There is a new move to decentralise post-Covid, so most of Sydney (and by extension, the Central Coast) is going to become full of more mixed use areas and Sydney city may actually become quieter. So there is that upside, but that won't take full fruition for another 5-10 years.

I believe the downside of Perth is that it's an economy based on a mining boom that's now on the way down. Much like Newcastle, it could struggle in a few years if they don't find a way to re-invent.

Perth? That’s if Chairman Mark lets you in bud!
The WA Hilton is currently not accepting new inmates.

The biggest issue I had with Perth was adjusting to the time difference. When I went there my flight took off at noon and when I landed it was 1985 :-).

Everything is relative. Housing might be cheaper in Perth but wages are generally lower so there’s a few things to take into consideration. Sydney is stupid expensive these days. Some like Perth’s isolation (ocean one side, desert the other) and some don’t. Perth might be safer though, according to some around here all men are capable of sexual assault so if you have a daughter you may need to consider that.

Perth will get the odd Bulldogs game but you know where most of them will be…

Good luck and let us know what you decide!

Another downside of Perth is that it's Perth.

It would be good to have you back mate.
I’ve lived & invested in property in a lot of places. You can’t beat coastal NSW in my opinion. I don’t like the way Sydney has headed but there are still nice areas.
Perth is great as you know but you might not be able to move there for a few months. There are also plans to jackhammer WA off the mainland.

QLD, nice weather but a bit of a retirement home and run by a bogan who sponges off NSW & very poor health care which is a consideration as you get older. Same as WA I guess

SA is good if you like churches. It’s nice down the coast though

Looking forward to catching up over a few beers and having a laugh at some of the fuckwits on here haha. I heard one got banned recently for blowing up at you. Hilarious

Woy woy ,
It was a bit of a shock when we got our first set of traffic lights in 99, but now we are progressing into the future, new ferry wharf had been open a week and seats around the area have solar wireless charging docks ,and haven't been smashed yet............yet
This is mass progress, times are a changing even people around hear are beginning to accept there's more music artists on the planet than cold chisel
It's the little town that could

Depends if your buying or renting and your long term plans I suppose.
I grew up in Sydney and left nearly 20 years ago.
I was thinking of moving back about 7 years ago but house prices are ridiculous and every time I go there for a visit, I just want to leave because its too busy.
Ive only been to Perth once for a while about 25 years ago. I really liked it, wasnt as hectic as the eastern cities. I did think at the time it would be a great place to raise a family.

Still if I didnt need to be near a city Id prefer northern NSW any where from say Port Maquarie up to the border. Can always drive to Sydney to see family if I wanted.

Depends on where you are in life, what you do for a job etc. You mention bringing up kids so I assume you either have them or would like to?

Perth is very nice, and probably a good place for kids. If you like getting outside, the Mediterranean climate means long hot summers great for the beach.

But if you have lived in Europe for so long, you might find it a bit isolating? It truly is a long way from anywhere else.

Sydney is pretty in parts, handy to nice day trips and if you're young and or wealthy it would go ok, but for most, the day to day is a grind. It just seems to take forever to get anywhere and there are people everywhere and its so bloody expensive.

Are these really the only two options?

Where I live there's no crime. Kids pay on the streets. No worries about much if I'm being honest.

So safety is a huge thing for me. Have red over the years people in here saying it's not safe for women I'm Aus. Can't remember who he was, but something about worrying about his daughter all the time.

I've got a teen daughter so that always plays on my mind.

Agree about mining in Perth. Sis lives there and says that all the time. Just love the climate and how much they've got to do

I guess it's got a lot to do with where I could potentially find a job? My profession is very niche so ..

All men are capable of sexual assault? What threads have I been missing?

I'd actually agree with this if it were murder because I honestly think we are under the right circumstances.

Sexual assault? Nah. Whoever said that, he's stretching it a bit. Maybe something happened to his wife, daughter or something so I'd understand why he'd thin that.

Is it that bad tho? I do worry about my kids if I'm honest and it's so safe over here

Yeah, I'm not sure if it'll be heaps soon bit haven't lived in Aus for a good 15 years or so ... Miss the family.

I don't like Sydney in all honesty. Costs are one thing, but just the way of living. I live in a really small town where everything is reachable on foot. Sydney?

Ha. News travels fast on here. Yeah, one plonker got banned then it all went south form there. Turns out I'm target #1 on here for a few people, which you'd know a lot about! Any advice?

It's funny I was looking at woy woy a lot a few years ago. But, then I did some research and realised that mainly crackheads live there so decided to stay away.

Explains a bit about you now mate haha

I'd look to buy. No way am I going to take a loan and mortgage. Want to come back and have a good life.

I'd be coming back with teenagers, so I do worry about my daughter the most. I'm just so sheltered here so the real world of crime etc seem so far away.

I feel exact same about Sydney. Just makes me nervous being there in all honesty. But, I'd want to be close to family so it'd breakout have to be in Sydney nor Perth rather than a bit up north
