The Bulldogs have reportedly shopped big money enforcer Tevita Pangai Jr to NRL rivals, who have shown little interest in the forward who was dropped to NSW Cup this week.
The Daily Telegraph’s Michael Carayannis revealed on SEN Radio that the Bulldogs have struggled to offload Pangai Jr, who is on a monster pay packet of $925,0000 annually making him the club’s highest paid player.
“It has been no secret that the Dogs have offered him up to rival clubs over the last few months,” Carayannis said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“His salary drops next season because he’s on that crazy money still with the backend of that last deal with Brisbane.
“He’ll get to around that $750,000 mark which is still a lot of money for (a player) who can’t play that consistent football for 80 minutes.
“For one of the highest paid players in the game, you need to produce.
“I just don’t see who is going to come knocking for that price tag.
“He’s bounced around a few clubs now and no one can seem to get the best out of him.”
Greg Alexander said that Pangai Jr was at a crossroads in his career after several seasons of underwhelming performances.
“Tevita has some shortcomings and he’s got some problems,” Alexander said on SEN Radio.
“What do they do with him?
“If they (the Bulldogs) wanted to offload him, it would cost them a fortune.”
Bulldogs boss Phil Gould has been forced to respond to angry fans after big money forward Tevita Pangai Jr was sensationally dropped to NSW Cup for Round 24.
The Daily Telegraph reported Pangai Jr, who is on $925,000 a season at the Bulldogs was dropped due to poor form in wake of the club’s 42-6 hammering by arch rivals the Eels.
Pangai Jr had only just returned to the Bulldogs side after taking a break due to personal reasons, but will now turn out for the Bulldogs’ reserve grade side against the Newtown Jets at Henson Park on Saturday ahead of the club’s clash with the Sharks that night.
The 26-year-old has had a mixed first season at Belmore scoring one try in 18 games since moving from the Broncos via a short stint with the Panthers last season.
Pangai Jr is the Bulldogs’ highest earning player in 2022, but was dropped after running for 60 metres in just 30 minutes in their clash with Parramatta.
Pangai Jr couldn’t even grab a bench spot, with Joe Stimson, Harrison Edwards and Chris Patolo preferred on the pine.
Gould confirmed the star player’s demotion on Twitter after Bulldogs fans questioned the absence of Pangai Jr on social media.
“Tevita has been named to play NSW Cup at Henson Park this weekend,” Gould replied after a fan asked why Pangai Jr was not in the 21 man squad named on Tuesday.
