Sydney FC scrape past Queensland
By Drew Cratchley
Sep 22 (AAP)

A goal from Brazilian substitute Patrick with his first touch of the ball has earned Sydney FC a much-needed 1-0 victory over Queensland Roar.

The glamour club's first win of the season came against the odds, with skipper Tony Popovic and South American import Juninho out with injury, and the pressure mounting on coach Branko Culina after his team found itself on the bottom of the ladder for the first time in A-League history.

The 22-year-old Patrick had only been on the field for a matter of seconds when he took advantage of some classy lead-up work from midfielder Ruben Zadkovich and veteran Steve Corica to put his team in front in the 69th minute.

Zadkovich put Corica into space by threading a lovely through ball and Corica crossed to an unmarked Patrick, who tapped the ball home before saluting the small but vocal Sydney contingent of the 16,582-strong Suncorp Stadium crowd.

Sydney defender Mark Rudan, who seemed to pop up in the right place all night for the visitors, missed an opportunity to seal the result in the 76th minute when his header from a Corica free kick just sailed over the crossbar.

The Roar came closest to levelling the score in the 83rd minute when substitute defender Sasa Ognenovski, who himself had only been on the field for a matter of minutes, was denied by a tremendous save from Sydney goalkeeper Clint Bolton, who had to dive low to his left to paddle the ball wide of the woodwork.

Bolton was the saviour for Sydney with a number of crucial saves and key decisions in defence denying a clearly frustrated Roar outfit the chance to snatch a draw.

The first half was a dour affair with both midfields battling hard for the ascendancy and each forward line given little opportunity.

It took until the 25th minute for the first clean shot on goal, which came from the boot of Roar striker Simon Lynch after a defensive lapse from Sydney.

The best chance of the half for either team came in the 41st minute, when a Craig Moore header was cleared off Sydney's goal line by FC midfielder Adam Casey.

Roar midfielder Marcinho pounced on the loose ball with a shot from close range, but Bolton, setting the tone for his stellar performance, was on the spot to clean up.

For Sure. It was a Scrappy Game with a Scraoppy Winning Goal. We managed to win so it was a Plus for us yet we still need to conjure up some more Wins in the Next Month or so to really have a Fit for the Title or atleast the Finals.

Stars Teed Up For Sydney Move

EXCLUSIVE: A former English Premiership-winning defender is on Sydney's FC's radar as they look to fill the gap left by the long-term injury to US midfielder Mikey Enfield.
The English left back in his mid-30s has a wealth of experience and would be prepared to come to Sydney but not as a trialist.

The left side of the Sydney defence has been problematic since both Alvin Ceccoli and Nikolai Topor Stanley moved on to Avispa Fukuoka and Perth Glory respectively.

Additionally, coach Branko Culina has stated he is in the market for a striker despite Brazilian signing Patrick opening his club account in the 1-0 win over Queensland last weekend.

One forward who may be the answer is a former German youth international striker now 24 whom the club is keeping tabs on.

Enfield had exploratory surgery on Monday when it was confirmed he had suffered cruciate ligament damage at a training session last week. He is expected to be out of action for between six and nine months.

"It was a really innocuous incident," said a club spokesman. "He simply twisted the wrong way at training and that was it.

"It's a real shame for him - he's a really good guy and was just about to break into the side. No-one would wish this on him.

"It's not been decided if he will stay on in Australia while he recovers or if he will return to the US until he's fit enough to train again."
Wonder who it could be?

ill be looking out who it is hth
Yeah, I'm guessing it's probably just another failed attempt to buy another 34-41 Year Old Former Great who has just had an okay season yet would like to move. If Sydney want to win another Title they have to think Spainish & Italian.

i'd much rather focus on local talent also (ie not letting players like burns and bruce d go) aswell

my mate threw up the name sol campbell but he is a CB not LB so not sure.

would have to be a former player of either arsenal, manure, chelscum or blackburn because they're the only recent teams to win the epl?

Yep, anyways... we managed to scrape past the Jets & get some Rvenge for the loss earlier in the Year. Great Soccer by Sydney FC in the 2nd Half to keep the Knights out infront of an okay 14,000+ Crowd. Brosque was the one who got the winner for us in the 36th Minute.

Times like this you just wish Sydney FC would just win another 3 In-a-row to be in the Top 2.

Culina recalls skipper Popovic

Article from: The Daily Telegraph
By David Davutovic
October 05, 2007 12:00am

SYDNEY FC coach Branko Culina does not subscribe to the theory that you must stick to a winning team.

Which is why Sydney look set to reshape their line-up to pave the way for captain Tony Popovic's return in tomorrow's blockbuster against Melbourne Victory at Sydney Football Stadium.

Despite keeping consecutive clean sheets and coming up against the A-League's most destructive strike force last season - Archie Thompson and Danny Allsopp - FC could revert to a back three with Mark Milligan sandwiched between the experienced pair of Mark Rudan and Popovic.

Brendon Santalab is the player most likely to be dropped, although veteran Steve Corica was also left out of the starting XI at training yesterday, as the mind games continued ahead of the match against Melbourne.

But Alex Brosque hinted that he may get a strike partner tomorrow, which could leave Brazilian Patrick as another surprise addition.

"I will continue to try and add value to our line-up and if it means adjusting after a good win, then so be it," Culina said.

"He (Popovic) is in contention. He's now trained a full week without any problems and he's the captain so you've got to take that into consideration.

"You've got to take into consideration the fact that the defence has done well over the last two weeks, so by bringing Popa in, are we going to improve the defence or are we destabilising it?

"We're trying to get quality players vying for positions, we had it last week, it was a pleasant headache to have leaving Popovic and (Ufuk) Talay out and we're in a similar situation this week but next week we won't be."

Rudan is one of those giving Culina a healthy problem - he, along with keeper Clint Bolton, Milligan and fullbacks Adam Casey and Iain Fyfe, have been impenetrable - but the latter pairing may be asked to push further forward this week.

The former skipper has been involved in some heated battles against Melbourne over the years and he's eagerly anticipating a contest between two of the A-League's finest.

"There have been two seasons and the championships have gone to Sydney and Melbourne," Rudan said.

"There's a lot of pride in both cities and states and we put it on the line when we play against each other.

"We're playing the champions, they're the measuring stick of the competition. They're third and haven't lost a game so they're doing something right, but they are build- ing momentum."

Culina confirmed former Aston Villa left-back, 36-year-old Alan Wright, will arrive for trial, although their priority was a "quality" striker.

Late goal defeats gallant ten-man Sydney FC
Sydney FC
Saturday October 6, 2007

A gallant Sydney FC played for almost an hour with ten men before Melbourne Victory striker Danny Allsopp scored late to snatch all three points.

Match referee Mark Shield reduced Sydney FC to ten in the 24th minute of the clash of the first two Hyundai A-League champions when he dismissed Steve Corica for a foul on Melbourne Victory star Steve Pantelidis.

The blockbuster was heading for a goalless draw when, just nine minutes from time, Allsopp scored what proved to be the winning goal, applying the finishing touch at the far post to an Adrian Caceres cross.

Sydney FC attacked from the opening whistle and had Melbourne Victory on the back foot. Adam Casey came close with a shot in the second minute and Michael Theoklitos made saves in the 18th and 23rd minutes.

But Corica's sending off was the game's turning point. Following it Sydney FC midfielders Juninho and Ruben Zadkovich produced some slick dribbling but Melbourne Victory had the better opportunities.

The clearest chance of the first period fell to Melbourne Victory three minutes before the break. Visiting captain Kevin Muscat crossed from the left-hand side and found Allsopp at the near post but his shot was blocked by Sydney FC skipper Tony Popovic.

Sydney FC started the second half in the same vein that it began the first - on the attack through Casey. The Qantas Under 23s squad member made a terrific run down the right wing and his cross only just missed an on-rushing Juninho at the back post.

Five minutes later Juninho put Casey through but this time his cross was cleaned up by Theoklitos despite Alex Brosque's best efforts. Playing up front on his own Brosque found the going tough as he was marked extremely closely by Melbourne Victory's defence.

On the hour mark Juninho weaved his magic, threading the ball between two Melbourne Victory defenders to find Zadkovich storming down the right flank. He passed to McFlynn but the Northern Irishman's shot sailed over the crossbar into the away end.

Branko Culina substituted Juninho soon after, with Patrick taking the place of his compatriot. With Juninho went Sydney FC's creative spark and the match of the round, which featured eight yellow cards and one red card, looked set to end with honours even before Allsopp netted his second goal of the season.

It really felt sweet leveling the Glory with only 50 Seconds left. I wish however that we kept the Damn Lead & that Free Kick Went in instead of bouncing on the Line. We would of & should of Won the Match.
