Australia banking on European experience

HANOI, July 19 (Reuters) - Playing week in, week out in the pressure cooker environment of the European leagues could tip the balance in Australia's favour when they face Japan in the Asian Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, the Socceroos say.

Australia got off to an awful start when they drew with Oman then lost to Iraq, but raised their game to thump Thailand 4-0 and set up a mouth-watering clash with Japan.

The Australians know they will have to play even better to get past an in-form Japanese team but expect the 'cup final' mentality they are used to in Europe to work in their favour.

'This is do or die and that suits our character as a team,' said midfielder Mark Bresciano, who plays for Italian Serie A club Palermo.

'As we've seen in the past, that's when we perform at our best. We can step up on these big occasions.

'We don't die off too easily and if there's just that little possibility of winning then we're going to take it.'

Although Australia are making their first appearance at the Asian Cup, they have already developed a strong rivalry with Japan after coming from a goal down to beat them 3-1 at last year's World Cup.

Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, who plays in for Middlesbrough, said the Socceroos were only just starting to get back to the same form they showed in Germany.

'This is a big tournament, it's a major tournament and for us it's second only to the World Cup and we're treating it as serious as the World Cup,' he said.

Despite the poor start, Australia were improving game by game, he added.

'I'd rather be getting better than getting worse and if we can get the result against Japan it's just going to kick us even further.'

While the bulk of Australia's players are based in Europe, only two members of Japan's squad play outside their homeland - Celtic playmaker Shunsuke Nakamura and Eintracht Frankfurt striker Naohiro Takahara.

Nakamura won Scotland's player of the year award last season and Australia know the key to beating Japan is to shut him down.

'Obviously Nakamura is one of those players that can take very good free kicks and is also dangerous around the box and is a good playmaker,' Schwarzer said.

'But we're just going to play our game as much as possible and be confident that we an get the result we need.'

Fowler turns down move to Sydney

Former Liverpool and England striker Robbie Fowler has turned down an offer from Australian side Sydney FC.

The 32-year-old had been in negotiations with the New South Wales club over a possible move to play in the A-League in 2007-08 but he has chosen not to move Down Under.

Sydney FC chief executive officer George Perry said: 'Naturally, we're bitterly disappointed but we're satisfied we did everything we could to persuade Robbie to come to Sydney FC, Australia and the Hyundai A-League competition.

'Robbie was tremendously impressed by what he saw in Sydney but he has chosen to go elsewhere. We respect his decision and wish him and his family well.'

Phoenix down Sydney FC in Pre-Season Cup
July 22, 2007 - 6:54PM

Wellington Phoenix on Sunday fired a powerful warning shot across the bows of their Australian rivals with a 3-0 Pre-Season Cup home win over glamour club Sydney FC.

Striker Shane Smeltz scored twice and Sydney centreback Mark Rudan contributed an own goal, as over 6,000 spectators attended Wellington's first home game at Westpac Stadium.

Phoenix, who lost 2-0 Central Coast in Gosford last week, became the first club in the PSC to pick up two bonus points for scoring three times.

The result lifted Wellington to top place of Group B above Central Coast, who drew 1-1 with Queensland Roar in Orange on Saturday and left Sydney bottom on one point

Sydney v Galaxy tickets on sale August 9
July 23, 2007

Tickets for November's much-anticipated match between Sydney FC and David Beckham's LA Galaxy at Telstra Stadium go on sale on August 9.

Prices range from $20 to $85, with family tickets $80.

Sydney FC season ticket holders and members of the Football Family will receive priority access to ticketing prior to the general public.

The match will take place on Tuesday, November 27 with kick-off at 8.30pm (AEDT).

"We anticipate huge demand for tickets to this historic match," said Football Federation Australia CEO Ben Buckley.

"The event has already captured people's imaginations here and we are really excited about hosting an event with such global appeal.

"This will be the first opportunity for football fans to see LA Galaxy with David Beckham play outside of North America, and we are looking forward to showcasing Sydney to the world with a packed Telstra Stadium on the night.

Tickets will be on sale through Ticketek.

Meanwhile, the Socceroos' Asian Cup quarter-final loss to Japan on Saturday night created a new Australian subscription TV record audience with an average of 419,000 people watching the game on Fox Sports.

The match had a peak audience of 515,000 viewers during the penalty shoot out, which Australia lost 4-3.

That's for Sure... One Problem... It's 4 Weeks away... The FFA decided to back the Season alittle to ensure that some of the A-League Socceroos get enough time tom Re-Cooperate so that they are Ready & Fresh for the 2007/08 Season.

Sydney FC chases Aloisi

SYDNEY FC coach Branko Culina says the club remains hopeful of snaring the prized signature of Australia World Cup hero John Aloisi as their marquee player this season.
It was reported that Aloisi, whose contract with Spanish club Alaves ended last month, wouldn't return to Australia to play after rejecting his only formal offer from an A-League club of $300,000 a season made by Queensland Roar.

Speaking at Sydney FC's new training base at Macquarie University in Sydney's west, Culina says the hunt for a marquee player has taken longer than he was expecting but that Aloisi is still very much in the frame to fill the role.

"We would have liked to have had it resolved by now but we've hit a few snags along the way, missing out on (Phillip) Cocu and (Robbie) Fowler, but we haven't given up," Culina said.

"John would do a fantastic job for any club he'd join and it's something that is ongoing and if John is still keen to talk to us then I'm sure we'll talk to him."

"The stakeholders and the club are very keen to get a marquee player and that would not only be good for us but good for the league."

Sydney FC recently failed in its bid to secure the signature of former Liverpool star Fowler who, after enjoying a five-day tour of Sydney, returned to England and broke the hearts of the Harbour City's football fans by signing with English Championship side Cardiff City.

Dutch star Cocu was another player on the hit list for the A-League's inaugural champions before his deal fell through.

Also of concern for Culina is the continuing speculation that Socceroos players David Carney and Mark Milligan, fresh from the Asian Cup, have received interest from European clubs and are both keen to leave Sydney FC to try their luck overseas.

"I would hope it's just talk at this stage," Culina said.

"The brand of football we play here allows them to express themselves and it's only natural that these players would want to further their careers by playing overseas but let's hope it's not this year.

"I was so very proud of the way they both played in the Asian Cup and it's a credit to them but it's also a credit to the club because we prepared them well by playing in the Asian Champions League and they knew what to expect over there."

Sydney Axe Sharks Friendly

Injuries to key personnel have forced Sydney FC to cancel its friendly against Sutherland Shire Sharks at Seymour Shaw Park that was set for Wednesday.

Sydney FC took the regrettable decision after Adam Casey became its latest player to pick up a knock, limping off before half time of the club's 3-0 loss to Central Coast Mariners at Canberra Stadium.

The unavailability of six players - David Carney, Steve Corica, Iain Fyfe, Mark Milligan, Jacob Timpano and Ruben Zadkovich - had forced Branko Culina to field an understrength Sydney FC side, including a trialist, for Sunday's match in the nation's capital.

Sydney FC remains scheduled to play New South Wales Premier League teams Manly United at Cromer Park and Penrith Nepean United at CUA Stadium on August 8 (7.30pm) and August 15 (7.30pm) respectively.

Before then Sydney FC will return to Parramatta Stadium, scene of its 3-0 defeat of Persik Kediri in the 2007 AFC Champions League Group E game on Anzac Day, to play Newcastle Jets in the 2007 Pre-Season Cup Play-Offs. Saturday's match will start at 7.30pm

Sydney FC end marquee mess with Juninho swoop

Michael Cockerill
August 1, 2007

SYDNEY FC's prolonged search for a new marquee player is over, with former Brazilian international Juninho Paulista agreeing to join the club for this season.

Juninho, 34, is believed to have agreed terms last week and is expected to be unveiled by the club on Friday. The former Middlesbrough playmaker is set to make his first public appearance in Saturday night's pre-season match against Newcastle Jets.

Juninho has not played regularly since being released by his Brazilian club, Flamengo, two months ago, and had hoped to return to England. But a failed move to newly promoted Premiership side Derby County has convinced Juninho to join the Brazilian exodus to the A-League, where he becomes Sydney FC's first signing from South America.

While Sydney FC coach Branko Culina had shifted his sights to signing a striker following a failed attempt to recruit Dutch veteran Phillip Cocu, the recent collapse of negotiations with former England forward Robbie Fowler moved Juninho back to the top of the list of targets. It is believed Culina intends to use Juninho in an advanced midfield role, where his record suggests he can contribute a steady stream of goals.

Juninho will be the only foreign marquee player in the competition this season and is the highest-profile player to join the A-League since Sydney's previous marquee signing, Dwight Yorke. The signing is a timely boost for the club following the recent dramas surrounding Socceroos pair David Carney and Mark Milligan, who have made no secret of their desire to move abroad on the eve of the new season. Sheffield United, relegated from the Premiership last season, are believed to have made a formal offer for Carney late yesterday.

Two years ago there were only two Brazilians in the A-League, but this season there will be 11.
