I don't think Baz is under pressure.
Gould knows the halves are not playing well and stepping up.
It's clear they have worked hard over the off season yet the players are not executing what they are being asked to do.

That's not on Baz.
GOULD will move on these hacks.
Just need to find the right replacement player.
Such a shame we couldn't snag Adam Reynolds
Executing what exactly? What exactly do you think we were trying to do? The way we setup was never going to ask many questions of the defence or give us much creative freedom, it was basically schoolboy shit. If that's how we're really going to approach games this season then Baz will 100% be out of a job.

I don’t mind the idea of JMK partnering Burton with Cook going into 9 as a starter.. either that or Burton and BBO - Avo is a bull runner that suits Centre or Fullback but you don’t move a specialist fullback for him and we have good centres in Naden and Schoupp with Alamoti being a future Sensation. Creedence really impressed too so Avo’s looking vulnerable.

Didn’t see much of Kurt Falls but he’s not our answer either - we need an established half, if we can’t find one here go to UK Superleague where guys like Aiden Sezer, Mitchell Pearce, George Williams, Blake Austin, Johnny Lomax, Mason Lino etc. are toiling away.
If your going there Cook might be a better half than any other whilst BBO can go back to his better position at dummy half were he isnt as frantic.

I believe a Dufty, Burton pairing would do wonders but I would give Creedence Clearwater a shot at making fullback his own :grinning:
Duffy in frontline defense a worry, Almonti suspect defender also

Each half will look a lot better next to Burton and with Fox etc in the team. Still, it's a shame none of them appear to have improved on their weaknesses in the offseason and none of them took the opportunity.
Agree to some extent but Burto has to find his feet too, as good as he is he ain't exactly getting behind the wheel of a Ferrari!
All the halves were underwhelming but I'm not that surprised really I have always had doubts on Wakeham and Flanno is just a no, in the unsure camp on Avo(and moreso now)and BBO is the ultimate rookie, he looked disjointed but at least was getting very involved.
See what happens next week but it looks a problem of sorts for Rd 1 at this stage and we're just 19 days away..

Anyone remember the try to Safiti last night i forgot watching now he ran right through Averillo and Jmk untouched they just looked and didnt bother anyone picking them for round 1 needs to log off now they are both fucking shit last night weak as shit in fact i think Averillo needs a spell in reserves because im not even putting him at fullback till he wakes back up

BBO was solid again in defense and i actually liked the look of him at halfback moving around more finally ... a few shit passes but thats alright he was there by himself what did Flanagan do last night nothing was he any chance of doing anything anyway we all know that is no

People say avo had first grade side to deal with blah blah well why let in a weak try then
When did BBO let one in hahahah he got us 1 back to tie up again its like saying if avo played in 2nd half everyone would make the excuse that he played with 2nd grade side and didnt have a chance in FG hahah

Dufty set up 1st try with cutting avo off

Dufty score 2nd try from left side of field

Avo fuck all at halfback in first half would of done fuck all in reserves side also

Even if you put burton with avo he wont do shit

For sure.. It doesn't help that he missed the first trial. It will take a few weeks into the season before we start to see combinations click with so many new players.

Remind me again why we blew big money on Kiki and didn't make an offer for Reynolds?
This x 100. It feels like we haven't had a half back for years. Disgraceful management by the club

Burton has to get the ball- before the halfback, if he's to have any effect. Otherwise he will be starved of the ball when the halfback gets tackled in possession.

Did you miss the part where Waddell shot out of the line and opened the gap? Dufty also didn't cut Averillo out, Averillo literally passed to him lol. Go play some FIFA :tearsofjoy:

Need to see the side with Burton calling the shots.

Need a 9 who can be confident ffs, not this JMK shit. Just run Cook there for now, i dont care if JMK can tackle and Cook cant.

That aside it was the same shit last night
With his defence, Cook won us possession twice in an unorthodox manner. Twice in one half.

Very strong rumours that Adam Reynolds was happy to stay at Souths for 650k
I’m sure an astute negotiator could have got him across for around that money. So yeah not quite Kikau money (considerably less)
Feels like a bit of a kick to the guys especially after we executed our ‘get out of jail free’ card with Elliot and then let Cotric go. (This seems even crazier now watching Okunbor run around last night)
Jamal Fogarty would've been great for and with Burton, level headed, solid, crafty, runs plays, it was probably the timing and speed it happened that GC let him go. Like you said, negotiation could have managed something. At least loan out players to the English and French SL. Loan each out a year (usually would cover a portion of wages and therefore deduct from salary cap). It doesn't have to be a permanent transfer, the loan agreement could have an 'option to buy' if player meets some criteria. These deals happen all the time in Europe.
BBO would've gained a lot from someone like Reynolds or Fogarty

Ok so I haven't been able to watch the game yet. Can anyone give me an UNBIASED/ level headed summary?

From what I can tell, we were obviously rusty and struggled with end of set plays but we finished with a draw when most said Newcastle would blow us off the park without jac, Burton, naden etc.

From what I understand, Newcastle put out a reasonably strong side too. While we no doubt have work to do, is it as bad as everyone is saying? Who was good? Who was bad?

Was a decent showing for some players, some not so much. Game management was poor although 2nd half had better direction from hooker and halves. Forwards done good, can improve. JMK seems to have improved but still plays like JMK. Our guns like the Fox, Dufty and co are going to make a big improvement to last season, Dufty showed this last night, covers the potholes. Still some silly errors although the reffing wasn't the best. There's a post game thread too.

There were some serious issues last night but give it another 6 days, see how the team goes against Cronulla with the actual starting backline + Hetherington and also the one we've all been waiting for - Burton in the halves. Then we can make a serious assessment of where we're at.

I agree with Baz that one of these plodders need to take ownership of the 7 jumper and actually prove they want it and I'm pretty disappointed with Averillo's performance last night considering he knows the club has pinned its hopes on him playing 7 and he's had a season in 21 and a full preseason in 22 training there and he dished up absolute dross. I haven't seen them train this offseason, but maybe playing next to Burton who will become the dominant half, Averillo will improve as that's who he's been training with? Maybe with Cook at 9 whos far more competent in attacking football than JMK, it'll help Jake and Matt come 5th tackle?

We'll have to wait and see before we make any rash decisions. I hope for the club's sake that Jake actually fucking has a go Monday coming
He ain’t a half.simple.he goes missing in games.he should be calling for the ball engaging defenders.he is a centre everyday of the week.
