Official Marcelo Montoya signed to end of 26

Im not unhappy with this signing. I must have been one of few Dogs fans that rated him and was unhappy when he was let go.

As good as he is for yardage and can finish a try acrobatically from close range, if we lose JAC (as seems to be the case), we will lose our ability to score long range trys.

Gus and CC obviously see the benefit of having wingers who can provide good yardage out of their own line, but if they dont have much speed, they need exceptional halves to set them up for trys.

This is where their mentality is flawed. Kiraz and Montoya can provide good starts to our sets, but our halves are not like Penriths and cant set up opportunities for our wingers.

On this basis, i can only applaud this decision if we make a big play for a spine position. Although i cant see it really happening unless we somehow land Ben Hunt or Pappy.
This is exactly my thinking. We aren’t the panthers with creative halves that can set up pin point tries for their wingers. They can get away with having slower wingers. Our game relies on spreading the ball early trying to give our backs space, so that’s why we need the speedier type of winger. Wingers with blistering speed that can finish off half opportunities

I don't understand the negativity about the signing,
Even if both JAC and Wilson stay put we'd still need to consider possible injuries...
No matter what sadly there will always be doubters.

People on here are always going to sook, I look forward to seeing how much damage montoya and kiraz will do bringing the ball back, Jac and wilson get dominated these 2 dont.

Exactly. I dont understand the carry on in here.

At best, he is a proven winger who will perform well enough to keep the juniors (Wilson/Sua) out. At worst, he doesn't perform and the juniors step up.

It's not like he is going to be on huge coin, and we need to make him work or we are tied by the salary cap.

People want our juniors to progress but then have a sulk when we are signing players that make those pathways possible. Sua or Wilson would never get a chance if we signed a replacement for JAC who is of the same calibre (rep player). Montoya gives us the chance to chance our arm with a young player whilst having a competent player to come in if needed.
Gabrael, Afualo and Mazzone are another 3 that will push for spots in the NSW cup team to start the year. For once we're actually stacked with young outside backs with NRL potential so we don't really need to be chasing anyone.

didn't we sign enari tuala as well or is that not happening now that we've signed Montoya

Don't think there's been any confirmation. I assume this is similar to the Watson/Mann situation we had last season where we originally went for Watson but couldn't agree a deal so we settled for Mann.

I first thought that the montoya news was only a joke, I guess now that we know its true, I just hope that it works out, because it looks likely that we will now lose JAC, who when fit he is definetly better than Monti.

Aslong as he bring that aggression and power running over, will be a decent backup lol

Well Gus will only sign people who want to come to the dogs. Montoya obviously wants to play for us and under Ciraldo's system he will definitely improve, I don't know why so many people are against this.

You need agression in the backs we can't keep getting dragged back to europe

Montoya came through our systems as a really highly touted junior as well for what it's worth. People got very excited on here when he was set to debut. And I don't think he's rubbish. But there are fans here that get pretty excited about players with some amount of regularity. And it's not often that they've turned into superstars despite getting hyped up.

And I'll hope for the best for MM. He's stepping into a better system/team than we had in place when he left IMO. So I'll give him the benefit of doubt.

I don't think he walks into an NRL spot. And unless I've missed it, we've still got JAC and Wilson on the books. Our depth at centre this year didn't seem great. When Xerri or Crichton were out we moved Kiraz. So I suspect this is a mid term cover primarily for the centres. Time will tell though. I hope the club decides what is happening with JAC soon so there's not months worth of rumour about it.
