Greg Inglis says he was 'looking after himself' as he walked away from Brisbane Bronc

By Wayne Heming and Steve Jancetic

Not quite a fond farewell ... Inglis explains why he walked away from Brisbane.
Greg Inglis claims he was entitled to look after himself but has not offered any specific reasons for walking out on a deal with Brisbane.

Inglis is expected to link up with South Sydney after failing to follow through on a proposed two-year deal with Brisbane Broncos, the lure of Rabbitohs owner Russell Crowe proving too tempting for the Test centre.

While the 23-year-old refused to confirm a deal with the Rabbitohs, he admitted he could have walked out on the game had Crowe not come calling.

"Pretty much ... if a good deal didn't come to the table I was looking somewhere else, switching codes," Inglis told the Nine Network.

"It was hard (walking out on Brisbane) but at the end of the day I've got to look after myself - I'm my own man and I've got to look after what keeps me happy.
"I had offers from other codes as well but I love league and that's where I want to be."

However a potential spanner in the works emerged when Melbourne released a statement confirming Inglis remained a Storm player.

The Storm agreed in August to release Inglis to join the Broncos on compassionate grounds, with his fiancee having secured employment in Brisbane.

"Greg Inglis remains a contracted player with Melbourne Storm and, in accordance with NRL rules, Melbourne Storm retains the right to determine who may be granted permission to negotiate with Greg Inglis," chief executive Ron Gauci said.

"At this point in time, Melbourne Storm has not received any formal request from any club requesting permission to open contract negotiations with Greg Inglis.

"Melbourne Storm is open to any request, subject to conditions, by any club seeking permission to negotiate with Greg Inglis."

While compassionate grounds were used to explain the Storm's original release of Inglis, the club cannot afford to keep him given they have to shed players to get under the salary cap for the 2011 season.

While he dreads the thought of lining up against Inglis in the NRL next year, Melbourne full-back Billy Slater said he hated the prospect of losing him to another code even more.

"He's got power, he's quick, he's elusive, he's got skill and strength and he can read the game," said Slater.

"It would be an absolute tragedy if the game was to lose him.

"It's difficult circumstances for him and his family. As a mate I just want the best for Greg and just hope who he plays for and what (sport) he plays, he is happy.

"As a Queensland teammate and a Kangaroos teammate of his I'd certainly love him to stay in the game.

"Within the rules, we've got to find a way to keep Greggie in our game.

Meanwhile coach Ivan Henjak said Inglis' shock decision not to sign with the Broncos had been discussed briefly before training and he hadn't detected any obvious disillusionment among players.

"I think we moved on as soon as the decision was made," said Henjak.

"There was always a chance when he didn't sign the contract and didn't turn up for training this could happen."

Ohh Mr Goose its always good to hear from you.. Of course he is hanging around with the so called man.. It is classic SBW sindrome.. Starts with talking yourself up then leeds to saying you are bigger then the team/club then finally includes a late night dash to the airport without telling anybody.. Inglis is in stage 1 at the moment..

As much as I'm LOL'ing at Brisbane, I do feel sorry for them. It's fkn stupid that all this has had to happen.

Note, all of this would NEVER have happened had Greg Inglis not been a wife-beating ****face. People like this douche seem to take everything they have going for them for granted. And it's OK, because Sport allows them to take things for granted.

So much injustice goes on in the NRL.

Not sure why anyone BUT Greg should be paying his legal bills. It isn't the Storm or Brisbane's problem, just extortion to get him to sign. You embarrassed yourself and the club, so fix it yourself.

A touch of the Mundine's can't be good for his career but he showed his tendancies already when he prostituted himself to Queensland.

Shame, I would've thought that Artie Beetson might've been a better role model for Koori youth. Someone liked and respected in his field and beyond it. Not a joke/boxer/mouthpiece that nobody likes beyond the hangers on that need support when they F**** clubs and fans over because they think they have a right to.

Hope he get some good advice soon.

He met with souths months ago - even before the brisbane deal was announced. That is from an ex souths players mouth.

Yes that is correct. He met with Rusty at his home as well as in Melbourne. The Brisbane deal was all but confirmed and Inglis just took it as a nice gesture and Rustys last words were along the lines of - if you ever want a contract..you have one at Souths. And now we fastforward...;)

Khoder isnt his manager though and wont be in the near future. He only knows Khoder through Mundine and they are very good friends. He doesn't have much to do with him. As long as Inglis wants to play league and as long as Alan Gainey is around..he will be his manager. Alan is very good friends with his family.

I guess in the instance, the salary cap is on Inglis' side. If he refuses to pay the legal bill, Melbourne can't release him and then they'd be over the cap next year, yeah?

He isnt his manager cuz Khoder will never get a licence to become a NRL manager. However if he does leave for union, you will see him becoming his manager.

Rusty will pay his legal bill. At the same time - Rusty can take Inglis to his house and hand him the amount of money and Inglis can pay it underhis name and none of it goes into the cap. If Rusty pays it - the amount goes into our cap. To cheat or not to cheat ? :D

I say good on South and Rusty...
The Broncos should have been a bit more proactive rather than reactive...
