My Hazem tribute:
A tale unlike any other in our game
How a boy from Lebanon rose to Rugby League fame
Relocated to Belmore at a young age
Through his youth it was soccer he played
But inspired by matches at Belmore Sports Ground
An oval ball eventually replaced one that was round
A strong Islamic faith, he would never drink or smoke
Already stood him out from other Rugby League folk
The Bulldogs gave him a chance, he took it with both hands
And soon he was playing in front of packed Belmore stands
Strong and safe in defence, elusive down the wing
Scoring try after try, “Hazem” the fans would sing
Goal kicking duties followed, he learned them from the best
Then perfected the art form to stand above the rest
Records began to tumble: most points, most tries, most games
A Bulldogs side without him, it just won’t be the same
He played at the highest level, for state and countries with pride
A little unfortunate not to have made more representative sides
He held his head high throughout an amazing career
Hazem El Masri, a name all League fans hold dear
