By Simon Brunsdon

Wide World of Sports can confirm Burgess is the player referenced by a Dragons statement released today. He attended Mascot police station this afternoon.

Burgess attended Mascot police station this evening, where he was charged.

"A man has been charged over an alleged sexual touching earlier this month," the police statement said.

"Earlier this month, officers from South Sydney Police Area Command commenced an investigation following reports a woman had been sexually touched by a man known to her on Tuesday 8 March 2022.

"Following inquiries, a 29-year-old man was arrested at Mascot Police Station about 4.40pm today.

"He was charged with sexually touch another person without consent and granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday 13 April 2022."

The Dragons were informed of the matter by the NRL integrity unit.

"The St George Illawarra Dragons have been made aware of a matter involving one of its players by the NRL integrity unit," it reads.

"The Dragons are working closely with all parties, as the matter is under police investigation.

"The Dragons will be making no further comment at this stage."

Burgess, 29, was recruited by the Red V this year and made his club debut against the Panthers on Friday night.

He previously played 149 NRL games for South Sydney, and was one of the best players on the field in the 2014 grand final, although his brother Sam was awarded the Clive Churchill Medal.

Burgess essentially retired from the game in 2019 due to a serious hip problem, but he mad a surprise comeback this year.

His twin brother, Tom, still plays for the Rabbitohs.

Outstanding... currently on a good behaviour bond for an incident in 2021

2015
Burgess was placed on a contrary conduct charge after he threw a water bottle at Roosters forward Kane Evans as he was walking off the field to the sideline; Burgess was sitting on the interchange bench at the time of the incident in the Rabbitohs 30–0 loss at Sydney Football Stadium. Later on 10 September 2015, Burgess was unsuccessful in his downgrade bid at the NRL Judiciary and received a 2 match suspension.
2017
In Round 3, Burgess was sent to the sin bin and later suspended for three matches after elbowing Newcastle player Mitch Barnett in the face during South Sydney's 24-18 victory. In Round 8 against the Brisbane Broncos, Burgess was put on report for a shoulder charge on Broncos five-eighth Anthony Milford during the Rabbitohs 25–24 loss at ANZ Stadium. After facing the NRL judiciary, Burgess copped a four-match suspension which eventually rubbed him out to play for England in their test match against Samoa.
2019
Burgess was placed on report after allegedly attempting to gouge the eyes of Wests player Robbie Farah. Souths would go on to lose the game 14-9 at the new Western Sydney Stadium. After the match, the incident was referred immediately to the match review committee. On the 2nd of July 2019, Burgess was found guilty of the eye gouge on Farah and received a nine match ban from the NRL judiciary. This was the longest such ban imposed for an eye gouge incident in NRL history, partially due to the fact that in the previous year's season, Burgess was guilty of another eye gouging offence

2021
On 25 August, Burgess was charged with malicious damage by Wollongong Police after an alleged road side incident. Police alleged that Burgess became involved in a verbal altercation on the 23 August with a 32-year-old man, before he allegedly grabbed the man's phone and threw it on the road. Burgess was ordered to appear at Wollongong Local Court on October 19. On 19 October, Burgess was given a 12-month conditional release order requiring him to be of good behaviour for the next year.
