They need the money. NRL still haven't paid back the $30 million loan from St George yet.

After cigarette advertising was largely banned from the game, the Winfield Cup disappeared, as did any money smoking companies pumped into the game.

Ditto alcohol advertising to a degree as well (although slightly more relaxed).

So the new cashcow for the NRL was betting companies for a mutual "partnership".
