Siosifa Talakai’s monster hit on Matt Doorey has sparked debate in the rugby league world after he was sin-binned for a shoulder charge that left the Bulldogs star seeing stars.
In the first half of Canterbury’s 18-12 win over Cronulla, Talakai came charging out of the line and flattened Doorey with one of the biggest shots we’ve seen this year.

Doorey got up and tried to convince the trainer he was fine to carry on, but later failed his HIA and was ruled out of the match.

Talakai nailed Doorey with his right shoulder, but there was conjecture over whether he made an effort to wrap his right arm around the attacker.

The shoulder charge is barred in the NRL and players must try to wrap their arms when making a tackle. There’s no doubt Talakai’s arm made contact with Doorey, but it was deemed incidental and he was sent to the sin bin and placed on report.

South Sydney captain Adam Reynolds thought Talakai and the Sharks were hard done by, clearly not believing he deserved such a severe punishment.

“What a joke,” Reynolds tweeted, with a face palm emoji.

Rugby league reporter Cody Kaye tweeted: “I hate that Talakai gets binned for that. Absolutely hate it.”

However, the Fox League panel seemed to disagree. Former NSW five-eighth Braith Anasta thought the officials made the right call, while Michael Ennis added even though it wasn’t a “traditional” shoulder charge, Talakai was still in the wrong.

“The traditional shoulder charge where the arm used to be cocked — it certainly wasn’t that,” Ennis said.

“The fact that the shoulder hits the point of the head, we are trying to get that out of the game. The whiplashing motion — he (Doorey) was clearly in discomfort and concussed.

“What looked to be a great hit was only fractionally wrong – I think he will be in some trouble.”

Shoulder charge or not, these days you can't make reckless or careless contact with the head or neck area and that's exactly what he did by blindly launching himself at Doorey.

These same people said Hetherington should have been sent off for a lazy clothesline when stepped by a fullback that did no damage but a blatant attempt to fuck someone up that results in a concussion isn't as bad or worse? Makes sense! Fucking muppets.

The fact there is any debate shows a problem in our game. Everyone can see what was wrong with the tackle but will make up excuses as to why it shouldn't be punished either because it's their team or there's people like Gus who think nothing should ever be punished and refs ruin everything whether they make the right call or not.

In days gone by it was a good hit gillespe would have been proud butplayer health and safety is paramount now thought the sin binning was sufficient

I don't even see why there is a debate. It was clear cut and disgraceful. I hope that Reynolds cops one next week and see what he has to say then. HIs arm was twisted around slightly which promotes the shoulder point forward, that shoulder then starts just below the chin and when impact occurs it raises upwards and knocked him straight on the point of his chin and upwards causing all that force straight through the blokes head. When you twist your arm around like that you can't wrap it around even if you wanted too, therefor it's deliberate as he cocked it for impact. Lights out, game over for Doorey and fukin dangerous! 3-4 weeks on the sideline IMO.

A charge like that just proves that it was worthy of a send off. The lack of consistency is obvious but not surprising at all.
Yeah. Maybe because it wasn’t above the shoulder ie: neck/head. Regardless he’ll be cutting the oranges for at least a month, so some justice. Hopefully Doorey is good to go for next week, Lewis’ recovery was slow.

It was good tackle no doubt but it is illegal now. He lead in with the shoulder then hit his chin thus causing the player to be concussed. Hopefully the NRL stays consistent with rulings like this.

There should be 2 charges.
1. High tackle contacting head. (Taking Canterbury player out of the rest of the game).
2. Shoulder charge. (Illegal tackle).
The 10 min sin bin didn’t cut it for me as punishment.
