As a life long Bulldogs fan i have seen a lot of great players come and go from the club. I thought instead of discussing potential recruits we could talk about players we miss and what we think made them great. For me it will be interesting to see what people loved about the players who came before my time.
Brent Sherwin.
I learned about RL towards the end of Turveys career so i know he was a super creative player but my actual recollections of how he played are dimmed by youth. I guess my concentration span was lacking when i was young. Brent Sherwin was the best halfback i can clearly remember playing for our club. He was just something special. He was the most important cog in our engine back then. Whenever he got the ball the opposition seemed to tense up. He had so many weapons in his arsenal that he just scared the defense while keeping me on the edge of my seat. He was never the quickest player in the team but he used his footwork incredibly well. Many players are capable of using the runaround play to re-inject themselves into the attack, but this was a big part of Sherwins game. It's something i don't notice many halves these days use much. He didn't score off his own line breaks much but fed easy tries to plenty of our backs when he cut through a gap. His other major strength was his silky smooth kicking game and being able to choose the right option quickly. We had a pretty potent backline while he was with the club and he was a master at giving them opportunities to show their class.
In short i think he was just an attacking mastermind for most of his time here. I know that personal issues had a negative influence on his form prior to him going to the UK but he is a player i will always have fond recollections of.
