That and they cost over $5000

Wow insane amount to pay for a pup.

I love border collies and have 2 in Italy on my farm. They are so smart but the down side if you live in Syd is the massive snout of physical and mental exercise they need.

And thats the thing with any dog you get, their not a "when I feel like it " object. They need socialisation, exercise, training and human interaction. Otherwise a bored dog will dig, bark or be destructive.

For me it's sad seeing dogs in shelters because and coming up to Christmas they can be a more that folks expect ans so get dropped off at some animal rescue place.

Jack Russell TBH. Some can be hyper, but other than that they are fairly low maintenance re hair, medical issues etc.

Smaller dogs eat less, take smaller craps, and physically more manageable and you don't have to upgrade to a bigger car to take them anywhere.

JRTs also have the heart of a larger dog when required, like George here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_(dog)

I think retrievers and labs are great with kids, just a bit bigger (depends on your backyard, lifestyle etc).
Does your JR dig up the garden?

All dogs dig when they are bored, though there are some breeds that dig because its in their nature to dig!

I have found a JR x Fox Terrior, which sound like an interesting mix

I think Jack Russells can get bored easily, and therefore dig, but mine is cross bred with something or other that seemed to take all if he negative traits of the breed out of him. He's not a natural digger, but leave him alone long enough, he'll give it a try. Small dogs can also squeeze into some pretty small spots, so you will need to make sure every possible gap in the fence is closed off.

Maybe look for a foxie doxie (lol it's a real thing). Mini fox terrier X Dachshund.

i don't get the point of a daschound. Yappy, can't walk properly for more than a few hundred metres. health issues. Neighbors behind me have two and they have zero redeeming qualities.

Not as bad as a pug/french bulldogs i guess. Those poor things just go around sounding like they're having a permanent asthma attack... hehe - fight me ;) .

Why are those french bulldogs so expensive?

I saw one on gumtree asking $25k for it?!

Good breeders will insure you get a small nasal surgery done otherwise they won’t let you have them. They are noisy though

There's no point to a lot for dogs other than just looking cute. Some people are trying to correct the breeds, think they're using Jack Russells for Pugs to fix their face and doing similar with French Bulldogs.

Best dogs i have ever owned have all been the cheapest, free to $300, spent big once $1000 for a inabreed mental mutt with issues that came out later as it grew up.
Got my last one from Pet Adoption at Bringelly, they mainly do American Staffys, all the ones getting put down at pounds, these lovely people get them and care for them, never put them down also, i got a male American Bulldog, from them, 2 years old chipped trained excellent dog , looks very good also.

Always loved staffies (Staffordshire Bull terriers). Only the English variety though. They're a beautiful breed that'll love the whole family.
I got a staffy female, stubborn as an ox to train but affectionate, they like to sunbake and get cancer on their teats

Team cat 4 lyf, fam. Though if I were to get a dog for kids, it would be a golden retriever, for sure. Big, but sweet natured AF.

Many small dogs suffer "small dog syndrome", and can get irritable/less tolerant as they grow up. Some breeds are prone to yapping as well.

Beagles (mentioned already), are super smart, but can also be rather stubborn. They are also escape artists, so you need to have a really secure yard, as once they get on a scent that's it.

'Oodle crossbreeds are overpriced and often an unpredictable mixed bag regarding personality. When the creator of a breed states they "regret creating it", it's generally not a good sign though.

You can't go wrong with a Labrador (suprised hasn't been mentioned yet), or a Golden Retreiver. Both absolute sweethearts of dogs, that are easy to train, and pretty chilled around kids (even ones who might try and ride them or dress them up).

Being easy to train also means kids can train them up as they grow, and get that joy of teaching dogs tricks.

If you are looking at Labradors, there are two lineages they come from (Show/Canadian and Working/American). Genetically similar, but the Canadian ones look more like a Newfoundland (and are more true to how the breed originated). They look like little bears.

English Staffies can be great, but I'd be getting one from a breeder if around kids. They can be pretty demanding, and because they are little nuggets might tend to bowl over kids.

In rescue shelters these days American Staffies seem to be in abundance. They CAN be really good dogs, but I wouldn't recommend them around children (unless from a breeder), because they are rather strong and can be almost ADHD like/unpredictable in nature. Absolute smoochers though in the right family/environment, but are a very intelligent and confidence driven breed which requires a confident owner to iron out any potential nuisance traits from them.

I'd probably go the Golden or Lab route, because they are pretty easy to work with.

On a side note, friends of our have two Great Danes are they are incredibly good with their kids.

I love this little stat, staffys don’t even make the list and look where labs/retriever’s land ! Just goes to show there is a big difference between perception and reality when it comes to dogs as reflected by the comments in this thread around those breeds.
