Queiroz lauds new duo

Carlos Queiroz has described new signings Nani and Anderson as artists of the game and is backing them to follow in Cristiano Ronaldo's footsteps and achieve big things at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese coach played an important role in bringing the duo to the club thanks to his connections in his homeland where the pair have plyed their trade for the past few years. Queiroz is excited by their arrival and is confident their unique qualities will ensure they become big stars at United.

"I have known about Nani and Anderson for a long time," Queiroz told ManUtd.com. "They are special players with great gifts and talent.

"We believe they are two of the most qualified players of their generation in terms of being a footballer. They are skilful players. Their technique is excellent. They have great pace.

"Nani has truly outstanding speed, while Anderson has power and a fantastic left foot. Both are the kind of players that before they become players are really artists in the game.

"They are the type of players we should bring to United. Just like Ronaldo. He's more of an artist than a player. We believe Nani and Anderson are the same type of player."

Nani debut

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Nani is on course to make his United debut against Shenzhen FC on Monday.

The match, which is live on MUTV Online and MUTV for UK and Eire subscribers, kicks off at 13:00 BST in Macau and the Portuguese winger is likely to feature in the Reds' third game of their Asia Tour having overcome an ankle problem.

Owen Hargreaves is again a big doubt for the game because of a knee complaint, but the 16,000 Reds' fans who will pack into the Macau Stadium seem set to witness at least one United debutant in action.

"Nani should be ready for Monday," revealed Sir Alex at his pre-match press conference. "He's been training well and should feature during the match. Owen has been doing some good training and is not far away.

"It should be another tough game for us. The first two matches have been of a good standard and I expect the same again on Monday."

Report: Shenzhen 0 United 6

New signing Nani scored on his debut as United ran riot against Shenzhen FC in a humid Macau Stadium.

The summer signing hit the Reds' third after just 23 minutes in a game that felt more like a practice match than a pre-season showpiece. Shenzhen rarely troubled United's rearguard and Sir Alex may have preferred a sterner workout. But the Reds did provide plenty of entertainment, including spectacular goals from Wayne Rooney and Chris Eagles.

Only five players who started against FC Seoul last Friday kept their place in Macau, with the manager handing starts to a number of youngsters. Nani operated on the right side of midfield, while Jonny Evans partnered Nemanja Vidic in central defence. Paul Scholes' injury-enforced absence handed Darren Gibson a chance to prove himself in central midfield and he looked lively early on when he combined with Wes Brown to force a corner in the third minute. Cristiano Ronaldo rose highest to head the cross past Shenzhen goalkeeper Jianjia, but the referee had already blown his whistle for a foul.

But the Reds continued to press and duly took the lead after 12 minutes. Rooney collected a curling Darren Fletcher pass inside the area and headed straight for goal. But while everyone expected the England forward to shoot, Rooney squared the ball inside to Ryan Giggs who rolled the ball into an empty net for a deserved lead.

The home side looked comparatively ineffective going forward but could have equalised had the referee spotted Evans' 15th-minute handball as he attempted to block a cross. United took advantage on 20 minutes via another moment of magic from Rooney. This time it was Giggs who provided the splitting pass into the area. Rooney controlled the ball before sending a superbly disguised chip over Jianjia - a sublime piece of skill that called to mind a similar pre-season effort in 2005.

Nani marked his debut with a goal shortly afterwards when he thumped Ryan Giggs' lay-off into the bottom corner. It was a well-taken strike that left the goalkeeper with little chance and prompted the 20-year-old's trademark somersault celebration.

Giggs, now 33, enjoyed a sparkling first half and was involved in all three United goals. The Welshman certainly doesn't look like relinquishing his spot in the side, despite the arrival of Nani, Anderson and Owen Hargreaves over the summer. Giggs made way for Alan Smith at the interval, while the United boss also introduced Tomasz Kuszczak, Rio Ferdinand and John O'Shea.

Shenzhen started brightest in the second period, with Ferdinand doing well to block a fierce Marek Zajac shot. But the more numbers the home team committed forward, the more the gaps opened up at the back. O'Shea kept his cool to net on 55 minutes after Ronaldo had drawn two men inside the penalty area, before the Portuguese winger capped a brisk counter-attack shortly afterwards to send the Reds 5-0 up.

It was the last action Ronaldo saw, as Sir Alex made a further four changes. Among them was Chris Eagles, whose impact was felt almost immediately. With the ball bouncing almost 35 yards from goal, the youngster lashed a shot over substitute goalkeeper Lei and under the bar. It was a fine finish and one that rivalled Rooney's first-half gem.

Smith should have made it 7-0 on 75 minutes but the striker almost seemed to have too much time when sent clear of the Shenzhen defence. Of course, it mattered little to the final result, as the Reds coasted to victory in front of yet another capacity Far East crowd.

Team Line-up:

United: van der Sar (Kuszczak, 45), Brown, Vidic (Ferdinand, 45), Evans, Evra (Silvestre, 59), Nani (Carrick, 59), Fletcher, Gibson (O'Shea, 45), Ronaldo (Eagles, 59), Giggs (Smith, 45), Rooney (Dong, 59)

Boss pleased with Nani debut

Sir Alex Ferguson was pleased with new signing Nani's scoring debut as the Reds hit Shenzhen FC for six on Monday.

The Portuguese winger was one of half a dozen goalscorers as the Reds cruised to a 6-0 win at the Macau Stadium in the third and penultimate match of United's four-game Asia Tour.

"[One game and one goal], it's a ratio that I hope he keeps going," Sir Alex told MUTV. "He did very well. It was his first game after an injury, but I was pleased."

Sir Alex used 19 players in total during the match, a sign that the entire squad is benfitting from minutes on the pitch. "I wanted to use as many players as I can," he said. "It's an exercise in getting everyone fit, that's what pre-season tours are about.

"We were able to do that, in the second half I brought on seven players which was good. Everyone had a share of the action. In the final game I will hopefully be able to give the likes of Phil Bardsley, Danny Simpson and Dong Fangzhuo more football.

"I thought young Darron Gibson, who has been out injured, did well in midfield. It shows the judgement in bringing him to the club, it's good to see the results of our scouting missions."

Although Shenzhen offered very little in the way of resistence, the humidity in Macau was difficult to deal with. "We found it a bit difficult at times in the heat," added the boss. "The humidity was very high but, nonetheless, goals are goals and some of them were very good.

"In the first match there was a bit of rustiness, which is natural in your first game back. But in the last two games (against FC Seoul and Shenzhen) we've not looked like conceding."

Tevez affair drags on

THE English Football Association and Premier League are waiting to hear if FIFA is prepared to arbitrate on the Carlos Tevez affair.

A meeting of the three organisations' legal teams broke up in Zurich overnight without a decision being made on the spot.

An FA spokesman said: "The meeting has taken place and left with FIFA to take a decision.

"We are waiting to hear from them and to see what they consider is the most appropriate way forward."

West Ham United is eager for FIFA to get involved in what has become a stalemate in recent weeks, with the London club refusing to sanction the Argentina striker's proposed move to Manchester United.

Under normal circumstances, FIFA would only arbitrate in non-domestic transfer disputes, but the thorny issue of Tevez's ownership prompted both clubs to ask for its help.

Tevez is registered as a West Ham player, but businessman Kia Joorabchian claims he owns the 23-year-old's economic rights and is therefore entitled to any transfer fee.

With the Premier League sticking to its position that the Hammers own the player and are, therefore, entitled to any transfer fee, a FIFA ruling in Joorabchian's favour would cause them huge embarrassment.

The time it takes to reach a conclusion could be crucial to Tevez's prospects of joining United this year.

There are fears the saga could drag on beyond the August 31 transfer deadline, precluding the striker moving to Old Trafford before the indow re-opens in January.

Should either party be unhappy with the outcome, there is also the possibility of an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which would extend the process even further.

What I don't understand is why does a club want a player who doesn't want to be there? He has shown how desperate he is to get out. If i was West Ham management I would sell him for as much as I can get and move on.

Yeah, I heard about Scholes being out. Thankfully we have an abundance of mids.

Some of those goals were sensational.

Yeah the opposition was ****e but Nani's and Eagles were well taken.

Rooney's wasn't too dusty either.

Going to be a big season.

If we sign Tevez that will be the icing on the cake with Anderson, Nani and Hargraves already signed...

Tevez agent starts legal action

RREPRESENTATIVES of Argentina striker Carlos Tevez have commenced legal proceedings against West Ham United in a bid to settle the dispute over his proposed transfer to Manchester United.

West Ham owns Tevez's playing registration but his agent, Kia Joorabchian, says he retains the striker's economic rights and therefore is entitled to any transfer fee.

Tevez's move to the English Premier League champion has stalled over the question of who should be paid that fee, estimated by the British media to be worth up to £30 million ($70.1 million).

Football's world governing body, FIFA, has recommended the dispute be settled by the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport.

West Ham said it was happy for the matter to go to CAS but Joorabchian's companies, Media Sports Investments and Just Sports Inc, later issued a High Court writ against the London club.

"I can confirm that the companies have today brought High Court proceedings against West Ham United PLC," lawyer Graham Shear was quoted as saying by Radio Five Live.

"This afternoon a High Court writ was served on the football club's solicitors.

"The companies seek the court's intervention to compel West Ham United to release the registration of Carlos Tevez in accordance with contracts entered into with the parties.

"We are asking the court to intervene so that Carlos Tevez can be registered to play with Manchester United Football Club as soon as possible."
