Arsenal chairman: Wenger's squad good enough

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood is confident Arsene Wenger's squad can mount a serious title challenge.

bigpond
"I believe we've never been in a better position," Hill-Wood told arsenal.com. "I think the team is absolutely first class.

"We had some very good results last year against the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea, the sides we didn't overhaul in the league but played pretty well against when we faced them.

"It's a young side still but they're a year older now so they're going to be that much better."

He added: "If you tune in to the media, you would believe that it's been a difficult summer but I think people have not really looked behind what's happened.

"I'm very relaxed. I think we've got a very good squad and we've added a few players, most of them not names people have heard of before.

"But that's very much Arsene Wenger's style. People hadn't really heard of Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira or Cesc Fabregas before they arrived."

Baptista ends his spell at Emirates Stadium

Julio Baptista is returning to Real Madrid.

During the summer, it has been widely reportedly that the striker’s season-long move to Arsenal would not be made permanent.

However the first official word from either club came at the weekend following the 2-0 victory at Barnet.

“For us it is sorted out,” said Arsène Wenger. “He returns to Real Madrid. That was clearly indicated to him at the end of the season.”

Baptista hit 10 goals in 35 games during his season with Arsenal, including four in the Carling Cup tie at Liverpool.

Wenger: We'll be aiming for the title again

It would make headline news if Arsène Wenger said his team were NOT good enough to fight for the Premiership crown this season. However, after a couple of years finishing fourth in the league, you can hardly blame journalists for asking the Arsenal manager that very question after their pre-season campaign began with a win over Barnet on Saturday — even if they knew the response.

“That is the aim of the season,” he said. “We are Arsenal. The environment looks very strong but when you go with a young team you feel you can improve every year.

“The players want to prove they have the quality. I believe they do have the quality I just want them to express their talent with belief.”

The departure of Thierry Henry leaves extra responsibility on the remaining strikers but Wenger is clear on the jobs Robin van Persie, Emmanuel Adebayor and Eduardo must fulfil.

“They have to create efficiency in our attacking game and replace the 25 goals per season that Thierry gave us every season,” he said.

“We lost a world-class player who did extremely well for us. Nobody will reach his numbers in the history of the Club. He played eight great years for the club and he was 30 so maybe he did not have the patience anymore to let the young team develop. You can understand that. I feel it was a tough decision for Thierry. The injury and not playing for a period of time had a big influence on his mind.

“But when you lose a world-class player you can only hope to get yourself on a level where you can complete again. It means that some other players have to take more responsibility.”

Arsenal boss Wenger: I didn't want to sell Henry

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has declared he didn't want to sell Thierry Henry to Barcelona.

Henry joined the Spanish giants for £16million last month after eight years with the Gunners and Wenger admits it was firmly the player's decision.

"Of course you don't want to lose a world-class player without having thought about it," he told the News of the World. "At the end of the day, it was his decision.

"He wanted to leave. You don't make a decision like that in a minute. You check to see if the player is really completely sure of what he wants to do.

"But Thierry Henry's decision is down to him. It's not my decision. He wanted to make the move.

"He's nearly 30. Maybe he didn't have the patience anymore to let the young team develop. You can understand that. It was a tough decision."

WENGER GOES FOR HOT ROD

ARSENAL are poised to smash their transfer record with a £15million swoop for Argentinian striker Rodrigo Palacio.

Reports in Argentina claim Palacio, 25, will fly to London tomorrow for a medical after Boca Juniors accepted the Gunners offer.

He is destined to wear the No 14 shirt vacated by Thierry Henry’s recent £16m move to Barcelona.

Palacio wears No 14 for Boca and Argentina and is seen as a direct replacement for Henry.

Ironically, Barcelona had agreed a £14.9m deal for Palacio just days before learning long-term target Henry was available.

An earlier bid of £12.7m had been knocked back by Boca president Mauricio Macri, who said: “It would have to be a much bigger offer because, for me, he is the best striker in Argentina.”

The deal was further complicated by the fact former clubs Huracan and Banfield are both due a cut of the transfer fee.

But now it appears all obstacles have been removed after Arsenal came in with a record-breaking offer.

Palacio is currently in Venezuela as part of the Argentina squad which played Brazil in last night’s final of the Copa America.

He is eager to prove himself in Europe after going to the World Cup in Germany last year as back-up to Hernan Crespo and Carlos Tevez.

Palacio has scored 39 goals in 79 appearances for Boca and has won five Argentine caps.

He partnered Tevez in Argentina’s 1-0 win over Paraguay on July 5.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has already spent £16.5m this summer on striker Eduardo Da Silva and full-back Bacary Sagna.

Palacio’s arrival would smash the club-record £12.5m paid for Sylvain Wiltord in 2000.

:( Henry's farewell message, sad to see him go and appreciate everything he did but it was always going to happen one day and its time that our young guys showed what they are capable of, the future is looking bright.

I done expect us to win the title but with the young group plus a few experienced heads they may surprise alot of teams and be a dark horse.
