I remember hearing his contract in the last 2 years will be more than the first 2 years...

So hell be paid as a centre for the first 2 then once Walker is done he will be paid as a 5/8.

Fcuk em, let them have him... He is good but seriously living off one awesome season and the Wabbits will lose their depth.
If that's the case, then the NRL should only register his 2 year contract and he should have to renegotiate in 2 years time.

It's otherwise a backloaded deal which the NRL has banned.

Ahhh fuck dat guy ….
Also no way in the world is anyone taking 300k less per year to live in a more expensive city unless his accommodation and living expenses been totally taken care of

money is still money and 300 is almost the tax he’d pay on his Canberra contract surely

south’s are doing something dodgy here but what else is new

Easts are still buying playing with Mitch pearces contract
100% right.
Unless Russell has told him he can get a tax break being part-indigenous and playing for an indigenous team, I can't see how this is all legit and above board with NRL rules.

But it's Souths.... They'll get away with murder and we'll still have to thank them for living anywhere near their land....

It is but NRL3shitty just explained its not a significant increase so its not exactly backended.

For example it goes from 700k to 950k opposed to 700k to 1.4mil.

In other words... its illegal unless ur the woosters or wabbits.

Add another reason to hate Soufffs even more than I already do, only highlights the lack of overall depth in the competition, when a "former" rep player leaves his current club who gave him the opportunity to play first grade and then representative Rugby League only to turn his back on them for LESS money because he desperately wants to win a premiership and believes he has a better chance at Soufffs than he does with the Raiders.

I'll be cheering for the Raiders whenever they meet Soufffs, then again I'd cheer for any team playing Soufffs apart from the Rorters who I hate just as much. I just hope they'd both tear one another apart and cop a spate of injuries like we currently have.

Personally I don't really rate Wighton, and he's probably one brain explosion away from ending his career.

Like he's okay, but I wouldn't see him as an elite signing who can turn a game single handedly for you.

So that will get him a 1 bedroom apartment in Sydney with the prices...
For $6 million he could probably buy the entire suburb of Hebersham, Whalan, Willmot or Shalvey and still have change.

All this is more easily explained by black racism.

They would do anything just to play with each other as opposed to line up alongside 'colonisers'.

“They obviously think it’s a bit of a risk or a gamble having a player who’s 31-years of age... How many clubs pay overs for players and leave themselves hampered with the salary cap and takes them two or three years to recover.

So they don't wan to entertain signing aged /ageing players eh?. Remember the Reynolds saga.It seems though that on this occasion they have no such qualms aout signing Latrell"s new best mate.....

I hope it back fires big time...

Why can’t you just wish them well and be happy they signed an OG on a good deal?

Anyone else confused how this bloke abusing wignton and calling him a weak gutted dog and a **** etc and to fuck off now is being classed as racist? [emoji23]

Honestly it feels like every chance now it’s a racist insult to the indigenous and it’s not even remotely racist from what I saw?

Fucking loser who is butthurt wighton bailed? Sure. Racist? No…

In the screenshots i saw there was some pretty racist stuff. The media aren't reporting them because they are pretty gross.

They have also said he will play centre to try and legitimise the 800k figure. So not only is JW taking a 1 million dollar pay cut he is taking a demotion from star playmaker to centre. Also going from the number 1 star in the team to number 4 or 5. Very weird decision. For someone on their last contract trying to stamp legacy. IMO after a good 2019, where he was good....all though I think the real stars of the team that year were CNK, Cotric and Papalii he has been underwhelming.

You be happy for Rusty and his mates. They are a bunch of hypocrites who will change their minds if it suits. They carry on about wanting to give the young ones a go and look to youth, shaft a club legend in Adam Reynolds because they would only offer him a one year deal when he wanted just two.... yet now sign a bloke who will be close to 35 when his contract is up... Plus can tempt him with a deal worth about a million dollars less...I will be interested to see just what spin the NRL put on this considering they are always talking about players being paid a true market value.....but hey it is Souths after all the pride of the league so everything will most likely be all above board.

Crikey
"Surely it is now time to put all that Souths’ underdog baloney to rest. Here, in no particular order are some of the poor and and the downtrodden who have sought inspiration from the home of Sydney’s battlers:

Tech billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes, who bought a stake in the club in 2021;
Casino billionaire James Packer, who also has a financial stake;
Actor Russell Crowe, also a co-owner;
Television celebrity Ray Martin;
Club chairman Nick Pappas, Sydney Grammar-educated and owner of Sydney CBD law firm and well-networked as a member of the Archdiocesan Council of the Greek Orthodox archdiocese of Australia; chairman, Bank of Sydney; former president and board member, Powerhouse Museum Australia; member, Council of the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens and board member of the Steve Waugh Foundation.

You can still backload contracts and most clubs do. You just can't heavily backload contracts like Des did with Eastwood where it was like 250/250/850.. Clubs can still have a 800/800/1 mil/1 mil type deal for someone like Wighton.

I guess it all depends on what the market value of Wighton would be...

NRL clubs are not allowed to 'back-end' deals
which means they pay a player unders in the first part of their contract and overs at the end of it. Back-ending deals allows clubs to target a premiership window with players who, if they were paid their true value, would exceed the salary cap.18 hours ago
Greenberg said clubs were in favour of ending the practice whereby players are paid below market value in the first year of their contracts and then receive an over-inflated amount in later years to manipulate the salary cap.
"In really broad terms what we are not going to allow is a contract to come on the table for $200,000 in the first year and $600,000 in the second year. We are just not going to allow that to happen anymore," Greenberg said.
