Say yes or miss next season
By Paul Kent
August 04, 2008 THE NRL will force Todd Carney to accept Canberra's decision to stand him down for the rest of this year or face sitting out all next season.
Carney baulked at the Raiders' ultimatum last Friday, asking for a deadline extension as he appealed to finish the season with his teammates, who are on the verge of an unlikely top-eight finish despite Sunday's loss to Brisbane.
Carney's defiance prompted NRL boss David Gallop to step in and threaten him with sitting out next season if he refuses to accept the Raiders' terms and joins another club.
"We have certainly indicated to the Raiders that if they terminate him and another club looked to sign him for 2009, we would not register him," Gallop said.
"We would deregister him for 2009, as that is the only reasonable position in the circumstances.
"All clubs recognise the inherent unfairness of players being picked up immediately after they have had serious behavioural issues leading to the termination of their contracts."
The deadline for his decision Mo9nday.
Gallop said Carney would be allowed to play next season if he remained with the Raiders because he has accepted the club's five-point plan.
After Carney urinated on a patron at a Canberra nightclub
a week ago, Canberra chief executive Don Furner gave him a five-point plan to stay at the club,
the conditions of which are non-negotiable:
* HE must stand down from training and matches for the rest of the season;
* HE must go on an alcohol ban until the end of 2012;
* HE must undergo counselling;
* HE must complete a community service program; and
* HE must pay a $20,000 fine.
Only the playing suspension has been disputed by Carney. If he refuses to accept the conditions, the only options open to him will be to flee to the English Super League or to rugby union.
However, Gallop has confirmed that the NRL might even lobby the English RFL to honour the ban if Carney elects to leave.
"It is difficult to enforce if he goes overseas, I don't think we have ever had one before where we have cared," Gallop said.
"But in his case we would have to consider it."
The NRL's hardline stance is designed to protect the Raiders and stop rival clubs from signing disgraced players, albeit talented, at bargain-based prices because they have been disciplined.
"In this case the Raiders made it clear they would not wish to see him at another club in 2009," Gallop said. "As for 2010, we would need to be convinced that he has made some significant inroads into his problems."
Carney's refusal to accept the playing ban prompted weekend speculation he was set to walk out on the Raiders and join another NRL club. Penrith was the most commonly mentioned club but the Panthers quickly moved to squash the speculation.
Carney's manager, David Riolo, sought an extension to last Friday's deadline to clarify parts of the ultimatum, which is expected to be cleared up after the Canberra board meet on Monday. A decision is expected later on Monday.
lol @ Carney, there's no way he'll be able to keep up an alcohol ban untill the end of 2012
