The South Sydney Rabbitohs are delighted to announce that international hooker Issac Luke has extended his playing contract with the Club until the end of the 2015 season.

Re-signing Luke has been one of the Club’s major priorities, with Luke signing his contract extension this afternoon.

Luke is one of the leading lights at the South Sydney Football Club as a current representative player in the New Zealand Kiwis team, and the reigning George Piggins Medallist for best and fairest at the Rabbitohs in 2010.

Luke is one of the most electrifying players in the NRL and has developed into one of the Rabbitohs Members’ favourites since making his NRL debut in 2007.

Issac is excited to have committed to the Rabbitohs for a further four seasons.

“I’m really happy about re-signing with the Rabbitohs and to be here for four more years is a dream come true,” Luke said.

“I’ve said before that playing with my brothers every week is what I love, and I regard South Sydney as my home.

“I’d like to thank the Members of the Club and the sponsors for their support and patience as we’ve been working on this contract and I can’t wait to represent you all this season and for the next four years as well.”

Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson is pleased to have Issac as part of the Club for the next four seasons.

“Issac is one of the lynchpins in our side, a very important player in terms of the balance of our team, and we’re really happy to have him on board until, at least, 2015.

“He is maturing as a footballer and as a person, and as a young father it was important for him to secure his future with a Club that he knew would look after his best interests.

“It’s great to have him on board long term alongside players such as Roy Asotasi, Sam Burgess, Greg Inglis and Fetuli Talanoa.

“I’m sure our Members and Corporate Partners will be as excited as we are to have Issac locked in for the next four years.”

Luke signs four-year extension but Inglis in doubt for Bulldogs clash

SOUTH SYDNEY officials were yesterday celebrating the long-term signing of hooker Issac Luke - who brokered the deal with the club despite a dispute with his management - but cursing the short-term health of their recent superstar signing, Greg Inglis, who is in doubt to face Canterbury on Sunday due to an adductor injury.

Inglis suffered the injury on Tuesday during a wrestling session and failed to fully train yesterday. Coach John Lang said Inglis was a chance of joining another of the club's stars, forward Sam Burgess, on the sideline.

''He's not a certainty, but we're confident he'll be right,'' Lang said. ''We'll make the decision on Saturday. But he's very confident and he seems to be a pretty good judge on those things.

''He's very confident he's right, Errol [Alcott, the Rabbitohs' director of athletic performance] is quietly confident. He strained it on Tuesday, so if he trained [yesterday] he'd be likely to stir it up. Errol wants to give him the four days' rest before he runs, so we think he'll be right.'' The fact that Inglis is unlikely to train until tomorrow, though, will be causing some concern for a player who is still finding his way with his new team.

''Not getting the running's the biggest thing,'' Lang said. ''But … GI's the sort of bloke that you could go and throw in a team that he's never seen before. He's got that feel for the game. He's done enough and he'd fitted in really well. I'm just hopeful he'll be right to play.''

Luke, meanwhile, has re-signed until the end of 2015, extending his current deal by four years. A dispute with his management team of Gavin and Chris Orr had held up the finalisation of the contract. In the end, Luke bypassed his managers to broker the deal himself, which shows the Rabbitohs' - and the player's - eagerness to stitch up a deal.

''He has done the deal himself,'' Souths chief executive Shane Richardson said.

''He's still got to deal with his management side of things, but we've spoken to the NRL and they understand the situation and they've registered the contract.''

Good news. He's a gun player and it's always good to see clubs re-sign talent they've found and developed. No one else saw anything in Luke and look at him now.
