PNG as the expansion team

I don’t mind it. Provides a pathway for a lot of young men and will change their family tree and community in a good way. I think it’s a positive and practical way to support a third world country and may see some better outcomes than foreign aid does.

Wait. Was there an 18th team? I’m so out of tune with the nrl. Did I miss something?

But yes. Should go 18. Make it a 9 a round comp. And then wait a few years and do the double to crack 20. Why do a double to get to 19? Makes no sense at all.

No way. Wow. Mind is blown. I guess make it an “National” comp was their thinking. But would think a second NZ team should have happened before png but yeh wow. Will be interesting to say the least.

2nd nz team could end up being the 20th team down the track though I guess we won't know that for another 5 years or so

So Perth is 2027 and png 28. Would have made Perth earlier. Make then next year. Silly to have an extra team worth of expnses without an added game.

What this means is average players will be on bigger money now. Also our watches for 26 will be caught in a bidding war with both teams which sucks. Will just mean players like okunbor will be retained in Australia as the comp tries to find 570 active players for a top 30 and an additional 100-200 as fridge or developments contracts.

Sucks their plan is to have a 19 team comp with 27 rounds playing a “home and away” season with 3 byes (so 24 games?) playing 9 games a week.

It’s all about choices. How is $600m of Aussie taxpayer money best spent? There are infinite number of good causes the money can be used for and our PM has chosen this one. For mine, this is totally insane, when we have issues with our public health system, our education system and significant economic stress amongst families, leading to homelessness and increased visits to free food canteens. I am not against foreign aid, as we have to be good world citizens. But this is going to cost us $60m a year for the next 10 years - to spend $600m on a sport with questionable and undefined outcomes is a complete joke! But not unexpected from Albo ….

Absolutely right. I have been on the waiting list to see a doctor for 8 years now & have been told that I am unlikely to see a doctor in my lifetime. Our politicians priorities are skewed a tad.

PS Is it true that the US Gov put in USD200M?

If the NRL can actually put this money towards building junior and lower grade academies PNG will produce the talent. They have the numbers they don't have the coaching, infrastructure, professionalism or setup to produce a mass of players like Justin Olam, Marcus Bai, Adrian Lam, Alex Johnston, etc. Like most we all know the NRL isn't about growing the game in PNG and neither the NRL or Australian Government care about helping the nation of PNG. It's just easy money for the NRL and ticking a political box at our expense.

All those who pay Tax now officially own an NRL team.

Why on the blue moon do we need two NZ teams? The one NZ side hasn't demonstarated it sells stadiums out in consistent years, it's had ONE good season support wise

There's 17 teams currently one from NZ equating to 6%. There's way more than 6% of NZ players in the NRL. If there's one thing the NRL has over the AFL and it's just one that being NZ.

Broncos bleated and cried for decades they should be the only team between Townsville and Newcastle. They are still upset over Titans being in the competition and only heightened since Dolphins.

Warriors can't handle expectations. Another NZ team allows the game to further grow.

Another NRL strength which they largely use is the large regional towns are more aligned to Rugby League - Gold Coast 6th biggest city (more support for NRL over AFL maybe not so much Titans itself), Newcastle 7th biggest city, Canberra 8th biggest city, Sunshine Coast 9th biggest city (when the ground is updated NRL will force Dolphins to play games there) and Wollongong to Nowra added together is the 10th biggest city the Dragons play half their games in the Gong. Townsville is a massive regional town. Only regional area AFL can sustain a team is Geelong the other towns don't have the size to sustain a team. Most of the Giants fan base is from Canberra same as Thunder in Cricket. Toowoomba is the second largest inland town after Canberra and they will be attached to any Western Corridor team that will one day play NRL.

I'm not in favour of PNG. I don't trust the intentions of V'Landys or Albanese in this. There's no way the money will be used for juniors, pathways, academies, lower grades and local competitions feeding into the PNG NRL side. After the deal collapses in the next decade they will be relocated to Cairns or Western Brisbane.

Wtf is that much tax money being wasted on footy especially for a country with no facilities or the ability to host a game safely on their land...

Why isn't the next franchise license being sold to another NZ team? Fuck the NRLshit and our government are stupid...

You’d create a rivalry. Also with the demise of the super union thingy or what ever it’s called it would be the time to strike. More people following the game the more who will play it. And I think the stat was the players from pasifika are responsible for over 50% of our players.

Also a second NZ team makes way more sense than a PNG team. Both financially and as a breeding ground for future talent. All the PNG thing does it sure up political alliances so China doesn’t get its naval and airfield base there.

yeah we aren’t going to care about NZ political rubbish. The game doesn’t need another Nz side- 18 sides is enough that’s where it ends, talent isn’t there

Png wont get many or if any marquee players from the nrl they'll most likely have to make do with there own players from png
Why not? The players would be crazy, it will effectively double their contract value (NO INCOME TAX) and everything from accommodation to meals to child care will be subsidised.

Team First

Tbh I don't think anyone in PNG really gives a shit about this team. It was the politicians that were pushing this, there are more important things to worry about than a footy team.
