Canterbury’s fading hopes of procuring playmaker Matt Burton this season are all but over after the Penrith Panthers rejected a swap deal offer.

The Bulldogs’ desperation to add Burton to their roster in 2021 culminated in club officials approaching Penrith last week to offer prop Dylan Napa in exchange for an early release for the five-eighth.
It comes just a couple of months after Canterbury refused to give up Napa in exchange for Burton's services, a decision they are now ruing as they look for answers to overcome the club's winless start to the season.

Rubbing salt into the wound was Burton’s man-of-the-match performance against reigning premiers Melbourne on Thursday night. It was a stark reminder of what the Bulldogs are missing as he led Penrith to their third straight win of the season.
At the start of the year, the Bulldogs offered Napa in a swap deal for Burton, with Penrith officials agreeing to consider the option at the club’s next recruitment and retention committee meeting. However it didn’t get that far, with Canterbury removing the offer before the Panthers had made a decision.

On the back of consecutive losses, and underwhelming performances from Napa against the Knights and Bulldogs in the first two rounds, Canterbury had a change of heart and were willing to offload the former Queensland prop to land Burton's services.

Penrith, who are in search for a prop to add to their depth in the middle of the park, immediately rejected the offer this time.

It came in the same week the club’s major sponsor, Arthur Laundy, contacted Penrith chief executive Brian Fletcher to apologise for comments he made to The Daily Telegraph in which he questioned whether the Panthers had Burton’s best interests at heart.
As revealed by the Herald, Panthers bosses retaliated to Laundy’s comments by rescinding their RSVP to watch the round two game between the teams from Canterbury’s director’s suite at Bankwest Stadium.

Burton stands to earn in excess of $100,000 more this season if he leaves Penrith to join Canterbury, but the concussion to Nathan Cleary, which saw Burton slot into the halves last week, vindicated the club’s decision to hold on to him.

Burton is expected to play NRL again this week as coach Ivan Cleary reshuffles his back line to accommodate an injury to fullback Dylan Edwards.

If the rumour around us paying all of Napa’s wage for the year and Burton’s was the reason we said no. Then I’d understand it... but right at this moment looking back, it would have been a perfect idea and well worth it. The guy is a hack and next year he won’t see a contract from any other team.

I never understood not giving them Napa when they asked. Even if they wanted us to pay most of his wage. Now we're stuck paying his full salary anyway. Napa is as useless as they come..

They're no chance of letting Burton go now, especially after last week. Plus I'd rather not risk Burton coming this season playing behind this shitty pack. The club needs to let it go and stop acting so desperate in this situation.

Silly by the club and I think they realised when Napa continued to offer nothing and Burton had a blinder against the Storm. Napa should of been gone weeks ago. It looks like we were playing hard ball when we weren't in position to do so.

You can't blame Penrith for knocking back Napa, they want to strengthen their forward pack not expose Napa as the weak link in defence.

Let's all move on, so over it ... Bulldogs should publicly come out and say we will cease any further release and look forward to seeing BURTON in blue-white in 2022.

but from here on now ... it's outright WAR between us and Penrith ... to hell with them, we'll bounce back when they come knocking wanting a favour they can go and get ........... .

Did you read the article? They were willing to take Napa weeks ago and the club pulled their offer to only want it back on a few weeks after.

They were willing to take Napa. IF we paid most, if not all his freight.

Burton in this side would have looked like a dog turd no matter how hard he tried.

At least this year with Dogs not performing. Those players that are not performing are sticking out. And not being hidden behind succesful halves.

Can you imagine Dogs getting Burton. Performing well and then the likes of Napa and Hoppa being re signed?

To be fair, if the terms of the swap are consistent with what was posted on the Kennel, they were incredibly disproportionate and had be be rejected by the club on principle.
