This would only work if 7-10 are on the same points with only the for/against separating them.

And that’s only happened once in the last 21 years.

I was actually of the impression that even if we expanded to 18 teams, the top 8 will still be the finals make as they would be the best teams. Before we even think of introducing a top 10 and rewarding mediocrity, perhaps we should expand the number of teams in the comp to see how the top 8 fair? THEN you can talk about a top 10.

I'm actually fine with this.
It gives the top 6 a week off, so the standard of footy in the finals should be better.
and lets be honest, normally the teams in 7 & 8 haven't really had that much of a better season than the teams in 9 & 10, and now they'll have to fight for the spot.
Plus it give that team that inevitably catches fire at the end of a season, an opportunity to do some damage at the team that limps into the finals' expense.

Want a wild card system? Fine. Give top four the week off, 5V8 & 6v7 first round. Second round is a top six comp. There's your fucking wild card. Better yet, 1 & 2 get week off, 3v6 & 4v5 first round, second round is 4 team comp. 7th & 8th don't get to play in the finals as they shouldn't be there to begin with.

Wild cards work in NFL as there are 2 conferences (AFC & NFC) and each conference has four divisions (North, South, East & West). In each conference's playoffs, the division winners are ranked on W/L 1 to 4, and the next top two ranked teams out of whats left of all divisions are the wild cards and are 5 & 6. 1 & 2 get byes, 3 plays 6, 4 plays 5.

Wild cards make sure a shit-hot team who just misses out on winning their division (refs fuckup, bad weather, whatever) gets a chance to play against other division winners. They are not to give 9th and 10th out of 16 a chance to beat 7th and 8th to get into the finals, just to create imaginary interest.

The comp needs less games, not more.

The NFL have 16 games a season and every one of them means something. They have 32 teams and only 12 make the playoffs. It's the perfect setup.

Instead the NRL has 24 games, 16 teams and 10 finalists with Origin in the middle of it...

That's the real reason why crowds and ratings are down. Because people lose interest throughout the season. Adding more games to include inferior teams only makes that worse, not better.

The NRL really couldn't get things more wrong if they tried. How much do Greenberg and Beattie need to run the game into the ground before something is done about it?

Please get rid of them before the next TV right are handed to Nine for 1/10th of their value and the game is damaged forever.

It really isn't that hard NRL.
Fuck off the second chance bullshit. If you aren't good enough to win all finals games you aren't good enough.
No rests either.

FINALS WEEK 1 (ELIMINATION)
Game 1 - 1 vs 8
Game 2 - 2 vs 7
Game 3 - 3 vs 6
Game 4 - 4 vs 5

FINALS WEEK 2 (ELIMINATION)
Game 5 - Winner Game 1 vs Winner Game 4
Game 6 - Winner Game 2 vs Winner Game 3

GRAND FINAL
Winner Game 5 vs Winner Game 6
Simple and gives any team in top 8 an equal and fair chance of victory.

Yep - another nail in the coffin.

It pains me to see the Beattie and Greenberg show.
I would rather watch Abbott & Costello "who's on first" - these guys were great comedians.

The other 2 are just a joke!

What a shit idea.
At what point do we preserve the integrity of our game over TV revenue!

What about the team that comes 11th with a 9-15 season? Surely they deserve a shot at finals footy?

NRL = CLOWNS. That is just plain dumb. A team that finishes 10th gets a chance at the premiership bahahaha jokers of the highest order

Here is the ultimate rule change:

Each team plays each other twice home and away - no more rigged draws and BS. Each team will have to face the same opponents. Whoever finishes with the most points wins the competition.

Someone get Annesley on the phone... Perhaps he can explain the following.

Tigers were in 9th and Raiders were 10th position in 2018 leading into the finals (round 21 to 25)
Tigers average home game crowds were 17,291 and played Dragons in front of 18,387 and Sea Eagles 8,163
Raiders average home game crowds were 11,862 and played Tigers in front of 14,583,Roosters 10,594 and Rabbitohs 15,990
With the exception of the Sea Eagles game of 8,163 - all others were either in line or greater than their average home game crowd. So how is this crowd drop off?

Then consider this:
The lowest crowds (less than 9,000) were recorded as follows:
1 game in March, 2 games in April, 2 games in May, 6 games in June, 3 games in July and 5 games in August.
With the regular rounds coming to an end, the actual round crowds were as follows:
Round 21 - 96,118. Round 22 - 121,351. Round 23 - 112,823. Round 24 - 118,244. Round 25 - 175,882. This is not crowd drop off.

What idiots are running this comp?
That's right, the same clowns who thought that playing Titans V Sea Eagles at Marley Brown in front of 5,138 in April was a great idea. Hope this is not what you mean by expanding the game!

But Brisbane get to play on Friday night every week. You can't change that. It wouldn't be fair on Brisbane to not get preferential treatment.

I like the concept but we're getting the same amount of games in week 1 and week 2 combined aren't we?

The point was IMO there's too many teams in the finals now, let alone adding two more.

Anyway, I'm sure its just an attempt by the NRL to distract from the other issues it has atm.

Not a fan, Top 8 already rewards mediocracy by having team/s that win less then 50% a chance at the GF. Top 5 was always better and playing everyone twice (home and away) so it's a true indication.

Time has come for a Northern and Southern conference comp with a second tier comp where the wooden spoon get's relegated and tier 2 winner gets promoted. It's not that hard people.
