Corey Waddell

Trent Barrett has struck his first blow against former club Manly by signing one of their players to a long-term deal.

The incoming Canterbury coach will reunite with back-rower Corey Waddell at the Bulldogs for the next three years. Waddell will get an immediate chance to impress his new teammates when Canterbury play the Sea Eagles on Friday night.

Barrett had enticed Waddell to Manly before his split with the club having coached the back-rower in the lower grades at Penrith.

Waddell played 23 games for the Sea Eagles in his debut season last year and the 23-year-old has featured in 10 matches this year.

He joins Nick Cotric and Blake Green as the Bulldogs’ new recruits heading into next year.

The Bulldogs also expect Newcastle assistant David Furner to join Barrett’s coaching staff after he was over-looked for the head coaching job at St George Illawarra.

We have enough average to decent players in the position Waddell plays. This literally makes zero sense. We'd be better off promoting someone new into the top 30 and using the money elsewhere... on face value this is worse than the Stimson signing.

Waddell is young (23), consistent, good defender. TBaz obviously sees something in him. It is hardly an earth shaking signing, but I'm willing to wait and see what happens with this one. This isn't a big contract signing, its a squad signing, with a bit of hope that the players best performances are in front of him.

It's a shit signing, spin it as much as you want but he isn't what we need. We've gone from offering big money to Bateman to signing this...
