Meaney is tough but doesn't overtly show it.

He has the speed, a bit of agility but needs to develop some aggression to take the next step and also develop a passing game and link better into backline movements.

He has the basics there but needs specialist training and psych sessions.

Would love to see him fully realise his talents.
We have one of the club's best ever fullbacks as our reserve grade coach. Surely Potter should be going through his game every week.

Hope so. Does Mick have the time tho?

Who helped Allen?

I bagged Allen at fullback as I didn't see him having the urgency as a last line of defence.
However as centre, he seems to know where he is defensively. He played as well as any last night.
Shame Tui Katoa make hard work harder with his defensive reads. Tui has nice footwork and speed in attack but must focus more in class when defense lessons are held.
For some reason we have a plague at our club where wingers race in tackle nobody & the ball goes out wide & they score

Yes it's a zero percentage play. Barely anything good comes out of it.

Kid has talent but is no where near in the class of other fullbacks. He is way too small and soft. Watch DwZ kick returns and watch Meaneys. He is a good kid but def nowhere near the type of FB we need if we want to compete with top teams
He’s smart though...knows where to be in attack and defence. I don’t think DWZ would have positioned himself for that excellent try by Meaney.

If we could put Meaneys head onto Dwz body then we would have perfect fullback...

Wait atleast until you open the envelope. Probably full of 1s.

Was excellent to see Meaney score that try. Not just the scoring of it but the way it was done. Only weeks after copping a rib cruncher in a similar position he ran the line with intent. Kid is a fair dinkum footy player.
Got a bit of experience under his belt now but needs to keep up the confidence to cement a spot in next years bolstered squad, popular player, hope they keep him about.

The more time he gets at fb, the more he will prove me right. He is our best option at fb.

To be fair I can't think of any fullback in the game that runs the ball back like dwz, so it's not no much a negative against meaney as it is a positive for dwz.

I do think meaney was playing really well before he got injured against souths and continued that against the sharks. I think he has a great attitude and work ethic from what I can tell. I do think he has been improving his game and has potential. I don't think he would cost that much, I'd be supporting his resigning for another 2 years.

We literally can't release all the 15 players off contract because you can't replace them all with outside players of any quality within the cap. Some must be retained or come from nsw cup/ juniors. There are others that need to be moved on before Meaney.

Meaney won't ever be like Papenhuyzen, but there is no reason why he can't improve his game out of sight like Ryan has. All Nick needs us better players around him, confidence and proper specialist coaching.
It wasn't that long ago when the storm put Papenhuyzen up on the chopping board :grinning:

Meany moves very well but just lacks tackle bust/line break ability. I'm not sure if this can come with more experience and confidence, or if he fundamentally lacks it.

I actually think he is quite similar to Corey Thompson when he was here.

i see Meaney similar to Dufty where they were given a spell yet somehow come back to show they're still there. Meaney is on par with Dufty in physical attributes and possibly speed. If he adds a few things to his game with the right guidance, I can't see why he can't be an answer to a stable fullback.
Like others have said, our money is better spent elsewhere if Meaney improves.
With some added bulk he could be a very good player.
Also needs some angry pills mixed with concrete pills, a little harder would do wonders with him in both defense & attack.

That try by Meany was a worked play, which was magnificent to see as i don't recall any being run successfully in years!
In saying that i agree DWZ's not particularly likely to pop up at the right time at the right place, he does however give plenty of effort plays bringing the ball back/out....& hopefully not stuffing it up with handling errors/brain sharts!
