Firstly, even if we had $4m to spend on the spine, there’s not a whole heap of established talent out there.
Secondly, the teams that won the comp didn’t have superstars in the spine, bar the roosters.
Melbourne and Penrith developed players like Hughes and Luai.
Let’s give our youngsters a shot next year behind a decent forward pack and with some strike power out wide.

Aaah Buzz another big night on the Shiraz or Merlo
I’m thinking what is wrong with turning Avirello into a Jerome Hughes? Is Hughes not in the top 5 halfbacks in the comp?
Gould has mentioned plenty of times about the cap being managed and juniors. The talk about getting rid of the panthers ‘overpaid players’ a lot of them were on not much when they started but as success went on they left for more money (Sharks paid Moylan more then he was at the panthers Peachey was on more at the titans and wanted to backflip to stay for less Parra paid more to RGC)
Dufty and Vaughan are on one year deals ( Vaughan on less then his dragons money)
I do have a concern re Kikau (that Tony Williams feeling)
Buzz hates Gould and is still dirty on us because we 10 times better on paper then his beloved sharks

At least write the correct spine... we're also not supposed to win a premiership in the next 2 years...

Lol Panthers were premiership favourites in 2017. Gus must of done something right. The position the panthers are in now is mainly due to all the effort gus put into there junior pathways. There reaping the benefits now of gus hard work.

We get Mahoney, all of a sudden our spine is looking top 4 quality.

And what’s wrong with using Hughes as a prototype for Avo? Nothing. Stupid old ****.

As long as we're not completely done with rebuilding the roster it's all good. Gather the quality where we can for now and hopefully fill in the gaps as they show themselves next year and beyond. I'd certainly like to have a killer spine at the snap of my fingers, but any league journalist that was worth a pinch of shit would know that you can't just poach an entire spine overnight. Problem here is Buzz Rothfield isn't worth a pinch of shit. He's a piece of shit, but isn't worth shit.

Management could bite Bulldogs

Roster management is not Phil Gould’s strong point. And it’s come back to bite him at the Bulldogs, writes via Daily Telegraph PHIL ROTHFIELD.

Phil Gould knows better than most about winning NRL premierships. Yet roster management is not one of his stronger points.

Ask Penrith Panthers. The Panthers couldn’t win a premiership until Ivan Cleary and Brian Fletcher carefully dismantled the team Gus built and offloaded the likes of Reagan Campbell-Gillard, Waqa Blake, Tyrone Peachey, James Maloney, Trent Merrin, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, James Tamou and Matt Moylan before their contracts were up. Now all the focus is on Gus’ multi-million dollar rebuild at the Canterbury Bulldogs.

This is obviously no five-year plan.
The Dogs want a quick fix which is why they have signed so many big names and especially big boppers — Paul Vaughan, Viliame Kikau and Tevita Pangai Jr to join the likes of Luke Thompson and Jack Hetherington in a heavyweight pack of forwards. But there’s one thing missing: a decent spine. Far be it for your columnist to be tipping to Gus on winning premierships but you don’t get to pick up Norm and Arthur without outstanding players wearing jerseys nine, seven, six and one.

Let’s look at the spines of the last three premiership-winnings sides: Panthers 2021: 9 Api Koroisau, 7 Nathan Cleary, 6 Jarome Luai, 1 Dylan Edwards. Storm 2020: 9 Cameron Smith, 7 Jahrome Hughes, Cameron Munster, 1 Ryan Papenhuyzen. Roosters 2019: 9 Jake Friend, 7 Cooper Cronk, 6 Luke Keary 1 James Tedesco.

Now the Bulldogs spine in 2022: 9 Jeremy Marshall-King, 7 Kyle Flanagan, 6 Matt Burton 1 Matt Dufty. I rest my case, your honour.

Gus and coach Trent Barrett know this and it’s why so many Bulldogs players are nervously watching this develop from the sidelines.

Like with the Panthers, there will have to be huge roster shuffling and many casualties. Already high-priced winger/centre Nick Cotric is being shopped around to rival clubs, including the Parramatta Eels. English front-rower Thompson has been offered to the Wests Tigers. Players like Corey Allan and Kyle Flanagan are on really good money but are under contract to the Bulldogs until the end of 2023.

So where does the money come from to sign Reed Mahoney from the Parramatta Eels. Or a premiership winning halfback and fullback, with respect to Flanagan and Dufty. The halfback position at Belmore will be most interesting.

Apparently Flanagan’s contract is heavily back-loaded and he’ll be earning $500,000 in 2023.

There’s also talk of Gus planning to turn Jake Averillo into a Jahrome Hughes-type of player. Good luck with that.

There is no question the Bulldogs will climb off the bottom of the ladder next year.

They’ve got Burton, Brent Naden and Josh Addo-Carr to add class, speed and strike power. There’s no question this club is going places but there will be some carnage before a premiership.

You can absolutely guarantee that.
Dear Pisspot Drunkenfield
We appreciate your concerns and promise to release all the clues regarding salary cap management and fixing the spine on TK, all in good time...:tearsofjoy:
Now don't be overly concerned be a good boy and wait for the information for your next press (venom) release in The Daily Tellacrap, backstabbing spineless lot :rage:

First thing Gus did was pinpoint our flaws and is doing a good job fixing them, not dying wondering !
I believe
Fullback...covered
Five eight...covered
Halfback...no available super half, we have 4 prospects in a much better team now !
Hooker...we've added Cook and hopefully soon Mahoney
Don't let Drunkenfield unsettle your faith :-)

Wait. I'm an uncle ... ? You think there's a chance?
I just want to say that the potential for regret here far outweighs the potential for pleasure. I'm not a professional wingman or anything, but I've steered plenty of friends away from mistakes that'd haunt them for many years. This is one such time. Steer clear of that bit of rotting flesh.
