I don't see how they CANT afford them tbh..

they haven't really got any stand out players apart from Gidley and Mullen and they've just lost Wicks and Houstan.

Me thinks this has been cooked up to divert attention away from the drug scandal.

i reckon the cops should investigate the administration of the knights lol. How else can players get away with drug dealing without other players/higher reps not getting sus :p

cover up!
Why would Smith leave the place so quick to join the rorters? Me thinks you maybe onto something there. He seemed to be turning the club around after the initial clean out, and then bang i'm out of here before the **** hits the fan.

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/...-buderus-move-a-nonstarter-20100304-pluo.html

AMBITIOUS Newcastle officials have made an inquiry about the possibility of luring Sonny Bill Williams back to the NRL.

In a bold move aimed at ensuring their season does not end in disaster following the departures of forwards Chris Houston and Danny Wicks after the pair were charged with drug trafficking, the Knights have contacted the NRL to ask whether they can sign Williams.

The 24-year-old former Bulldogs superstar is now considering an approach from the All Blacks, who have suggested he ensure his availability for next year's Rugby World Cup in New Zealand by moving home to play for one of the country's Super rugby franchises.

Williams's French club, Toulon, is also keen to keep him after going to extraordinary lengths to secure his services when he walked out on the Bulldogs in 2008.

Williams's drawing power was highlighted when 39,688 fans packed the SFS last year to watch his first rugby appearance in Australia for the Barbarians. His ability to generate interest would be as big a factor for the cash-strapped Knights as his on-field brilliance.

To sign Williams, the Knights were told the Bulldogs would have to relax a term in Willaims's contract termination deal, for which he paid the club $750,000. This prohibits him from playing for an NRL rival before 2013 - a condition Bulldogs officials insist they are not willing to waive.

NRL chief executive David Gallop told Newcastle officials of the issue and said the NRL would support every effort to enforce the term.

''I did speak to one club during the week to point out to them that a part of the settlement between Sonny Bill Williams and the Bulldogs is a term that if [he returns] to the NRL he could only play for the Bulldogs before 2013,'' Gallop told the Herald.

Speculation linking the Knights to Williams and former captain Danny Buderus, who is playing for Leeds in Super League, swirled around Newcastle yesterday after local radio reported approaches had been made. Knights chief executive Steve Burraston ruled out approaching Buderus to return to the Knights but confirmed the interest in Williams.

''I wouldn't say I wouldn't be interested because he is obviously a back-rower and an enormous talent,'' Burraston said of Williams. ''Obviously we've lost two players, obviously that frees money up under the salary cap and most definitely we are in the market. Both of them are great players. But we've had no discussions with anyone at this stage.''

It is understood the Knights have about $200,000 under their salary cap to spend on replacements for Houston and Wicks, but the club's strategic development manager, Keith Onslow, does not anticipate securing new players in the next month.

The Knights believe they will have a better idea of available talent once the premiership kicks off and players who are perhaps struggling for opportunities with their existing clubs could see Newcastle as a more attractive option.

Former Knights halfback Luke Walsh sought and was granted a release from Newcastle just days after the opening round last season and, by week two, he had signed for Penrith.

''I've gone fishing, but I haven't caught anything yet,'' Onslow said. ''I've spoken to coaches, CEOs, recruitment staff, agents - everyone out there knows our position, so we'll just see how things pan out in the next few weeks or so.''

What the hell is this ??? Greenberg's comments on SBW return

Newcastle Knights call off the bid to lure Sonny Bill Williams back to NRL :

The Newcastle Knights' audacious attempt to sign Sonny Bill Williams and bring him back to NRL has failed after financial negotiations broke down.

However, Canterbury-Bankstown have opened the door for Williams to return to the NRL this season - on the proviso they receive financial compensation for releasing their grip on a one-time favourite son.

It represents a significant shift in approach from the Bulldogs. Under the terms of his acrimonious release from the club two years ago, Williams -- off contract with French rugby union side Toulon in May -- is forbidden from playing with any other NRL side until 2013.

The Bulldogs had previously suggested they would not entertain releasing Williams from that clause. Last night, however, chief executive Todd Greenberg -- who has received an informal approach from the Warriors over Williams -- suggested that stance could be altered if money changed hands.

"We're open for a discussion," Greenberg said. "We wouldn't consider waiving it without a dollar amount being factored into it."

Williams is expected to return to the southern hemisphere when his deal with Toulon ends and has been strongly linked with rugby union in New Zealand, although NRL clubs are also monitoring the situation.

The embattled Knights were among them.

After being stripped of Chris Houston and Danny Wicks, both of whom resigned after being charged with supplying drugs, the club approached the NRL this week to discuss Williams's situation.

"Newcastle contacted me during the week and I advised them that it was a term of Sonny's settlement with the Bulldogs that if he sought a return to the NRL, he could not play for any other NRL club before 2013," NRL chief executive David Gallop said.

Given Newcastle's tenuous financial position, it could not afford to pay the Bulldogs compensation.

Few NRL clubs could. The privately owned Warriors, financed by New Zealand businessman Eric Watson, are the exception.

While Newcastle has accepted defeat in the pursuit of Williams, the club has also been linked with an attempt to bring former captain Danny Buderus, now playing with Leeds in England, back to the club.

What Tha....

Interesting. Sonny Bill Williams being chased by Newcastle. Bulldogs asking for big money for a release of some kind. (Source: News on Sunrise 05/03/10).
.
One question I have: Will the NRL register any contract between a Club and Sonny Bill Williams?? (Considering his last dealings with the NRL).
.
Another silly Question: What would be the Dollar Figure to compensate the Mighty Bulldogs considering that they have already received $75,000 of Choco's dollars as a form of compensation. I would say that that figure would only scratch the surface of revenue the Bulldogs would have made in promoting a team with $SBW in it. In my opinion, the Bulldogs deserve more, much more than $75,000 if he wants to return to the NRL.
.
The Warriors were also reported as having interest in $BW. Your thoughts Boys and Girls.

Wow i can't believe this article, didn't expect us to show any interest at all. Greenberg is a businessman though, and we are lacking firepower in the 2nd row so it wouldn't be a bad move. However, attitude is a big factor, and IMO if we were to resign SBW that would be a backwards step in improving our image and reputation in the league. Especially considering the way he walked out on the club when we needed him most.

We're not showing any interest.

We're saying we're open to discussions if another club wants to sign the sideshow as long as we're duly compensated.

He won't come back anyway but if he did we might as well might some money off the judas. Why not make money off another club while they pay him to sit on the sidelines with one of a thousand injuries?
