Klemmer continues to excel

Prop David Klemmer was given a small respite after his NSW Origin heroics by coming off the bench in Monday's game against St George Illawarra - but still topped the charts for his team's statistics.

The 24-year-old made 19 runs for 208 metres for his 56 minutes on ANZ Stadium – more than fullback Moses Mbye made in 80 minutes (168 metres).

On top of that Klemmer surged against the Dragons defence – three of them his Blues teammates five days ago – for 67 post-contact metres, as well as making 26 tackles and not missing one of them.

"He's been fantastic Klem,"' coach Dean Pay said. "Personally I thought he was NSW's best forward in that opening 20 minutes as well. He was great and he's been fantastic [for us] all year."

Apart from Klemmer, Pay was encouraged by the fight in his players to come from 8-0 down to draw level 16-16 midway through the second half.

But in the end the Bulldogs fell short 18-16 – the seventh time in their 10 defeats to lose by six points or less.

"You jag those and you are a long way up the ladder... But at the moment the reality is we are not," Pay said, who rued the fact the Bulldogs were outplayed in the opening 20 minutes, when the Dragons piled on two tries.

"The 60 minutes after that I thought was fantastic – probably the best footy we've played all year.

"After a really slow start ... it got away on us a bit and we fought our way back – got ourselves back into the game. We got close, but not close enough.

"You take away the first 20 and we're coming up for a win. So we're getting better. Hopefully we can put 70 minutes together next week and then 80 minutes after that. I want to make sure we get that progression, get that performance up every week," Pay said.

The round 14 clash with the Dragons was the second placed team in the Telstra Premiership taking on the 15th.

"The most frustrating part is knowing that we can match it with the top teams," captain Josh Jackson said. "But it's a consistency thing for us. We fall in and out of games and that's something the top teams don't do.

"[Top four teams]... know how to finish games and we've just got to learn to do that. When we play our best footy is when we're playing with that confidence."

The best footy we have played all year coinciding with the fact Foran did not play. He should be next on the list to move before next season.

But anyway, Klemmer has stood up. Klemmer and JJ are examples of what type of first grade player the bulldogs can develop. Need more of those.

It's not like the fans haven't been saying the same thing for years.

The top 4 teams have actual game managers in key positions.
Players who can close out a game.
We have duds.

I have found it odd that no one puts Klemmer's name up as the best prop forward in the game. I think he is easily in the top few in the game, and if not, he is the #1 prop.

Especially when you consider the context of Klemmer playing in a team that is coming 15th - it makes his performances all the more incredible.

The kennel:
You know we could make finals if you think about, we just need to ahh you know win. We have the team to do it.

This week's Big League

"Amid turmoil, this is for certain - he wants to be a Bulldog for life"
This is what you want to read....not that mercenary Mbye..." The club has salary cap issues so I thought I would milk some more money from the Tigers cause my mate Reynolds told me to come here...cause he's Bulldogs thru and thru, you know!"

He's just been really one dimensional to be considered the best. The last few years all he's been concerned about is getting post contact metres and running into the first bloke in the defensive line. Teams would just hold him up and let him walk until they get numbers in and then just roll him over for a slow play the ball. They don't care that he gained 13m or so, they care that they slowed down the ruck and prevented us from gaining momentum.

He has looked like changing in recent weeks and is making a noticeable effort to find his front and push away from defenders or find an offload. Would be nice for him to add some sort of footwork to get in between of defenders instead of just running at whoever is there infront of him lol.

But the main thing is likely when you compare the best games of say Taupau or Fifita against Klemmers best games. Klemmer is more consistent and will make metres but Fifita or Marty will also make similar metres while also providing a shitload of a tackle breaks, offloads and other attacking stats.

Klem's loyalty is refreshing.....your lack of realism is mind boggling.

Most players are professionals first and foremost. The club dug us into this hole.....players who seek deals elsewhere don't deserve the hate. 99 percent of players go where the money is....and if it helps us, why be bitter? Get with the times!

Having said that, Klem is a throwback to the days when club loyalty was more commonplace and a legend.

It's not like Klemmer isn't on a shitload of money with us either lol.

Fifi and Marty will also come up with errors pushing the pass and miss tackles...Klemmer is pretty good with his hands (case in point catching that ball like he was at first slip)

Agree all he needs is late footwork at the line

True, doubt he'd be here for 200k....although the NRL wouldn't sign off on that deal even if he did lose his mind and consider it......I'd like to think he'd take a little less to stay here. That's all you can really hope for these days....and even that is rare.

We only need to snag a good half back and we can go a long way.

This week's Big League

These are the kind of comments that brings a club and team together and it's what the fans want to hear. He would not stay if he thought we weren't heading in the right direction. I am sure the new board have spoken to the senior group and given them an insight into what the future plans are.

Most will happily accept those errors when there's so much upside that comes with it.
