I mean I’m not defending Marley but what he said is mainly right.

Asiata is and has been on the decline for a long while. His defence is and always was shit.

He had lovely ball playing but that was 7 years before he would play for us?

Flip side if it’s a minimum 1 year deal to replace Elliott I could live with the risk. Though I also feel it’s a bit of a wasted roster space and something better could of been done. Surely.

Though I’d also of jumped at Asiata in for 1 year on minimum wage over Elliott here still on 500k ffs. Just tend to agree that from my own eyes Asiata is shit and shouldn’t be in our 17.

BBO on the bench so where does he go? I want BBO starting and if he is avo will be on the bench.
How is this relevant. Whether it’s BBO or Avo on the bench as a utility. Asiata is a Middle Forward there is no reason they cannot both be there.

He is a close to minimum wage experienced player that will bring some much needed variety to the squad. He is far from a certainty for the top 17. But is definitely a good cheap option.

Most people (myself included) questioned signing Ava as he was past his best and had injuries etc. Look at how well that worked out. Hopefully Asiata can make a similar impact. He'd be signing for less than 200k on a short term deal and will be a bench or backup player so it's a low risk move.

You’re looking at it the wrong way.

He’s not signed with any long term vision or to build plays around him and all the rest.

He’s signed because Gus was looking over players to fit a budget spot he has open, and Asiata’s a player that comes at that price and can play multiple positions.

He’s a money ball signing. Sure you can point out a hundred players you’d rather want, but could you find one better at the price and with the versatility.

If he plays limited minutes in half a dozen games he payed his wage. You pay for some tools on the shelf because you might need them, not because you always use them.

Gus must have another signing up his sleeve, to sign Asiata must of got him on the cheap because I would of thought they'd go for Peachy for Elliots money.. Unless they're going to use Elliots money to upgrade Burton's contract?

The Canterbury Bulldogs have reportedly resumed their pursuit of Brisbane Broncos' off-contract forward John Asiata.

While the Broncos are yet to confirm Asiata will leave the club in 2022, it has been previously rumoured the Bulldogs ere keen on the talented prop and lock, who can also play in the halves.

It's thought with roster space quickly running out at Red Hill that the chances of the 28-year-old Penrith-born forward getting a new contract at Red Hill are relatively slim.

According to a Sydney Morning Herald report, the Bulldogs are now looking at Asiata for a second time as a possible replacement for the recently departed Adam Elliott.

The club announced on Friday night that Elliott would depart Belmore following an off-field indiscretion, with the club describing it as "in the best interests of both parties."

Asiata, who began his career at the North Queensland Cowboys over a period of seven years, shifted to the Broncos ahead of the 2021 season.

It has been a frustrating 12 months for the forward though, held back by various injuries which held him to just ten matches across the course of the season.
A change of scenery for Asiata could be exactly what's needed, and while the Bulldogs were looking to clean up their salary cap to bring in a first-choice hooker, while also exploring Mitchell Pearce for 2023, Asiata on a cut-price contract could be an ideal addition for the club.
He would provide ball playing and a hard-nosed attitude, while his experience would also prove invaluable in rubbing off on the club's younger players.
Director of football Phil Gould is understood to be a big fan of Asiata, and while he previously told the forward to "not wait on a Buldogs contract" it appears that may now be changing.
The Bulldogs recently announced 12 players would exit the club at season's end, and while they have made six high-profile signings of Matt Burton, Josh Addo-Carr, Brent Naden, Matt Dufty, Paul Vaughan and Tevita Pangai Junior, as well as young gun Joshua Cook, roster spots still need to be filled for 2022.

Explaining the logic behind signings like this to a nonperforming expert, "keyboard coach" is banging your head against a wall.

This is exactly what I've been trying to say and you've absolutely hit it. Gus doesn't just wake up and see Asiata as part of our vision.

If he is willing to sign on min wage or thereabouts its a no brainer. Gus has said that not even Crichton or Ogden are willing to accept minimum wage at this stage so the talent you can select at that price point is limited.

I don't watch as many NRL games as I used to (aside from Dogs games) so I've honestly got no idea how good this dude is. The fact that he can play in the front row/back row and halves?! is probably the reason Gould is keen on him though. That sort of flexibility is invaluable to have in your top 30.

Na he's shit, just another attempt from Baz and his cookie cutter approach. Been on the decline for years and has only suffered serious injuries since then, nothing signing. Money ball signing? Lol.

Exactly. Gus has said to get the right balance in your salary cap you need to get get more value out of your cheaper players.

Asiata will come cheap for 1 year but hopefully the value we get out of him exceeds what we pay for him, and a 1 year option is no risk to us. I like the fact that he is something that we don't already have in the pack.

On the other hand we were paying Elliot overs , and not getting value for money. I think it's a smart signing by Gus

Mate most people on here know more than Gus…
Do people forget the huge contracts that Gus offered RCG and Blake? LOL. He might know as much as anyone in the game but don't act like he has never made mistakes, might as well delete the forum because "Gus is always right".
