Terrible yesterday. Looked really unfit to me.
Re: Smith. He hasn’t played in a while and was gassed.
I thought he started well and cut a couple down in low tackles. He missed 3/21 tackles in 42 minutes

Avarillo made some very good front on tackles, but missed few others. Combination of fatigue, technique & lack of 1st grade experience. In the off season, hopefully coaching staff will work on improving his technique & bulking up. But he is a real footballer with heaps of promise. We are coming last, this is the perfect time to keep him at 5/8 & get more experience that will be invaluable for next season.
I remember Benji being a liability in defence in his first few years & was rightfully targeted by other teams. Just like avarillo will be. He will get better in defence just will take some investment of time & good coaching

Not surprising, team is unfit to begin with + he has played fuck all footy. Still he's a shocking defender, I think it was last season where he missed something like 8/12 tackles in a single half lol.
Agree whole team unfit, well forwards very unfit.

I don't care, the deal is already done and the big bucks are rolling in next season on. As I said previously the NRL operates under a salary cap and our big money signings need to be living up to their price if we're any chance. Are you telling me that after watching him play you're confident in him being the game breaking forward his wage demands him to be? I don't.

This has been an issue forever with us and more so under the current adminstration. We've obviously had massive restrictions on us but even so the big moneys signings have been abysmal so far while key positions have been completely untouched. Napa, DWZ, Thompson, re-signings like Jackson, etc. I'm just over it.
I'm not confident, no. However there are extenuating circumstances which need to be considered. When Napa came in the team was relatively stable, there was the optimism that comes with having a new coach, new systems to learn, etc. Neither was there a global pandemic, quarantine, isolation bubbles, and a looming recession. Add to that the info we have that Thompson is on not much and the objective of getting him over early was to get him settled for next season.

I'm still hopeful that with the chance to settle down, get out of the bubble at the end of the season, maybe get some family over here with him, and start work under a new coach and staff, Thompson will get back the mentality that he is known to have, and we'll see a lot more from him. Seeing the big bucks starting to roll into his bank account will probably help too, he seems to be an honest professional type of lad.

Pretty sure this has been mentioned before, but at the moment Thompson is on not much at all. The big money starts next year. So how about waiting until then?
Thats not even the point. Yes money does matter but if you are in a system that doesn't allow you to be the best player you can be, it won't matter if you're on 10 dollars or 10 million.

I tried to say it was the system and shifty teams mates but was told I was making excuses for him. Well just watch the game last night and have a look at how Toomaga goes. He basically got the Thompson treatment lol. Everything run through Tolman. Getting trash ball from JMK, running decoys all night, which equates to a massive 61 run metres.

I'm not saying its all the system, he'll need to improve, but the structures and players around him are a huge part of it.

A good coach would have addressed his issues, and put him into first grade when he was ready, - with players prepared to help him. We just throw kids to the wolves.
Yes but why is the alternative mate? Sub par squad at the moment with next to no depth. Might as well give the young fellas a run.

Remember once when Folks the legend was coaching. There was a young fella always wore head gear. Was told he was to small, couldn’t tackle! Well JT went on to be a immortal. So some you genius on here say now in 2020 Avo can’t tackle needs to be moved. What is the sign of insanity doing the same mistakes expecting a different result? We need to stick with him give him time. Who knows hopefully he develops to half the player JT was and he be a great for us

How many tackles Chris smith miss or “not lay a finger on”
Get the Fcuk off the kids back
Go give it to the nupties like Jackson smith tolman Reimis smith Meaney etc whom are definitely leading by eg arent they

Meaney missed hoppa jnr 4times alone in the second half cold
Fucking Chris Smith wouldn’t make an impact in park footy. Bloke misses half a dozen tackles a game in his 20 mins and blokes on here think he’s essential to this team. FMD

Well i'm not hopeful of anything under the current adminstration...i guess I'll just have to wait a few hours more and finally watch a real team play 8-)

The only thing I'm worried about with Avo is that he is too good for us and will leave for a better team.
Dont jinx us mate. Let’s all hope TB can get us back on track and start winning some games of footy

Benji Marshall was famously poor in defense earlier in his career. Tim Sheens adapted the team's defense in order to have Benji in the team. A decent coach should be doing that for Avo while he is young. Yes he needs to improve his defense a lot, no that is not going to happen over night. Benji hasn't been the liability in defense he was when he was young for a long time now.

The point though is that Avo is straight out a massive liability when the other team have the ball, and something HAS to be done about it which doesn't involve the lazy solution of not playing him at all.
The coaching in lower grades must be sub par as well if his defencive flaws havent been adequately sorted.

Lets hope the junior coaches are improved as well.

Good quality coaching is so important. Look at the poms in UK before their Olympics. They heavily invested in quality coaches, stole some of ours as well and put in good development programs.

Now they kill us in Olympic, Com Games sports. Bloody unheard of in the good old days ;).

Harper.... man. Wtf. Everyone here knows he is a solid option at centre yet we choose Holland and Montoya... are those two c*** even signed beyond next year? And they get Lafai. The coaching staff literally thought it was better to sign someone for 6 months and have two duds that are off contract over having a solid young player on a low contract as a back up for this year, next year and however long he could stay for
However anyone wants to spin it, it says a lot of the management of the football team no matter who you want to make excuses for.

In the 1 full game and 20 minute cameo in another game this season that Averillo has played 5/8 he has 4 try assists. And in a team that has the worst attacking stats in the comp, that's pretty good. The way he took on the line those few times last night, he always looked a chance of creating something. Attacking wise he has shown more than Lewis, Wakeham and Cogger combined. He obviously has heaps of potential and definitely has the hint of X factor about him.

And lets not forget he is an inexperienced youngster with only a handful of first grade games playing in the team running last with no confidence. Yes, he has defensive issues that everybody can see but with an off season of proper strength training (he is still growing), proper coaching and hours of practice his defence will improve dramatically. Ideally for him his new coach is an ex half who was skillful with a strong running game so we know Averillo will get proper specialised coaching and I'm pretty sure TBaz would be looking forward to coaching and developing him.

I'm still unsure what his best position is. Although he looks good at 5/8 I feel he could be an even more devastating fullback as his running game is his strength. He has plenty of pace to get on the outside of defenders but he also has the skills and kicking game of a 5/8 and at could be the all round fullback we have been waiting for. I do see an early similarity with Jack Whiton as in his running game is his strength who started at fullback before turning into an elite 5/8

Either way we have a young, very raw but exciting prospect who I hope will develop into a real top line player with x factor in the next few years for us

Wighton started as a centre, converted to 5/8, moved back to centre, fullback and then back to 5/8.

Yeah his first 3 or 4 tackles were copybook, I think the kid is still nervous and fatiguing fast. I think this time next year his defence won’t even be spoken about. The main thing I was worried about was his kicking game and his kicks were nice last night. We didn’t get to see if he has a long kicking game but by going off his goal kicking, I think he will have big boot. His involvement in the last 15 min was really promising, helped by the fact he actually got some ball. I think Wakeham at hooker was purposely going away from Lewis and Tolman and feeding his old mate, which is fine by me.

SG said in the presser he sent out several messages to Avo to get more involved.

Then he sent Wakeham out. I guess even SG could see that he'd have to actually put some thought into his coaching and gameplan.

Geez we've been badly let down by Pay and Georgalis.

I know, it amazes me that guys like Pay and Georgalis actually got to coach first grade. That speaks volumes for where we are at as a club. These 2 clowns have set us back 2 years.
