Is Gus actually the real problem?

This is the thing that always gets me. People have terrible memories when it comes to injuries and ref errors. I.e: They forget that these things have a huge bearing on results.

You just have to look at some of the best performing clubs this season and how losing only one or two players has affected them. It shouldn’t be understated really. When you have 2 of your starting pack out for the whole season practically (Kiks only played a few games) and many others having from a few weeks to months out, you’re up against it in a major way.

Logically it might seem like you should still win games as a replacement player can’t be that much worse, but in reality, every replacement player will usually reduce the whole team’s ability by a bit. When half the team is players that otherwise would be in reggies, it’s no surprise that they don’t perform well.

Injuries have definitely compounded some questionable preseason decisions. Perham at 1. Captain selections, workload expected of Reed. Declaring Flang as our half to steer the team.
josh Jackson’s retirement which was outside clubs control hasn’t helped.

We started the season relatively strong with 3 wins from 5 games and could of very easily been 4 from 5 if not for the Warriors rort game where Mahoney was clearly obstructed. And no Addin Fonua-Blake wasn't supporting SJ because a support player cannot be in-front of the ball carrier.

Then take into account our prized recruit in Kikau plays three games all year, Thompson doesn't even start the season and still hasn't played, TPJ missed the first 7 games, injuries to Kiraz, JAC, Brown, Patolo, Burns, King playing busted all season, Avo playing on one leg for three games and origin selections to Burton and JAC. Compound this with a squad with the least amount of NRL experienced out of all the 17 NRL teams. Our team has never had the chance to build any form of cohesion.

My only problem with Gus is his big ego. From my experiences in multiple workplaces prior to retiring in 2015, people similar to Gus in key positions invariably make big mistakes that cause major issues.

And considering he blasted them, said he'd have to find players that will follow the process ...then picks virtually the same team....do they have the necessary faith and respect in him to pull themselves up and reset?

Exactly right. Plus your defence will break down with different players inside and outside of you on the field each week.

Yep, that’s another reason a team can struggle. That’s not to say Gus and CC don’t bear some responsibility, however I believe injuries and CC trying to find the best players to cover them, has been our biggest challenge. Once he comes to a conclusion as to who is best in each position, he’ll stick with them. The problem is it’s not a clear cut choice, a good example being Perham. Sure Averillo may be a better attacker, but does he talk at all?! I haven’t seen much evidence. Also how good is he at sorting the defensive line? Not that Perham has done a great job of that. But the point is it’s easy to say get rid of him, but will anyone else be better? Wilson and Papa are still kids, so a big unknown, plus we’ve blooded so many kids already this season, CC probably wants to go with some safe choices.

The imbos climbing into Gus need to take a look at our lower grades and see what talent is coming through. The Knock-on Effect Cup team is leading the comp, Jersey Flegg are second, S G Ball eighth, and Harold Matthews fourth. All of these teams have a sprinkling of genuine quality performers, signed up and/or nurtured by Gus, and several of them will be first graders and even rep players when they mature.

The club has improved in all areas, bar fg results. We are obviously moving in the right direction

He wants the boys to be Penrith and we haven't got the boys to be Penrith.

It will take longer than at Penrith. Their juniors weren't as bad as ours are thanks to Des.

Hard for him to make progress in 2021. No lower grades made it almost impossible to start making personnel changes and moving the pieces into place. Particularly given our cap and how unattractive the club was to potential players.

Yes and we never will really bc they arent in the surrounding suburbs etc like Penrith, Broncs even Dragons in the Illawarra so its gonna take longer and a far more extensive scouting system.

Gus doing as well as can be expected in building those systems and junior recruitment.
