A Mortdale set. The cream lining above and below the windows was a nice feature of the old steel, and timber cars.

These were the widest suburban trains in the world when they were built. All platforms had to be cut back to fit them. The newer Milleniums and Waratahs are narrower, which is why there are gaps between them and the platforms at some stations.

Not the overhead is the same as railway catenary, not tramway wiring. The intention was to upgrade the line to US Interurban style trains - but it never happened. Similar overhead was used experimentally between Hurlstone Park and Summer Hill.
