South Sydney captain Greg Inglis has been granted a week's leave by the club to help overcome a virus and ongoing shoulder issue.

Inglis is unlikely to play in Saturday's clash against the Warriors on the Sunshine Coast after a troubled start to the year was compounded by an illness that has kept him away from the playing group over the past week.

NRL.com reported on April 2 that Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett was concerned for the long-term welfare of the 32-year-old, who has announced plans to retire in 2020.

Inglis' fitness was a talking point in the opening rounds of the year after he returned to training in the summer heavier than his usual playing weight.

The Maroons skipper had neck and shoulder surgery over the break. He also faced court on drink-driving charges in February.

Rabbitohs forward Sam Burgess told NRL.com on Tuesday his Rabbitohs teammate needed some space away from the game.

"He's not been well last week into this week," Burgess said.

"The shoulder has been giving him grief. We've given him the week off. Greg's a busy man and in Sydney you can get a bit consumed.

"He's not been great the last three to four days so we've given him a bit of time."

Burgess said the interest and scrutiny around one of the biggest stars in the game had gone overboard.

"I just care about Greg and don't care about the hype around it," Burgess said.

"I care about Greg as a person and feel there's pressure put on him externally. He's just getting his body right at the moment.

"I just think everyone step back a little bit and give him some time."

......

Virus my arse... Retire you fat drunkard!!!

Certainly seems that way. Safe to say he won't play FB again unless there are injuries.

Souths probably trying to find a way for him to suddenly come down with like aids or something, so he can retire medically.

Will be a one and only case of being medically retired due to mental health injuries with Souths cap exempt as a result.

Obviously WB has told Inglis his time is up.

He did the same thing to Hodges & Parker.

My reading between her lines listening to Dobbo on MMM Brisbane this morning is that he is goneski. Souffs are keen to ease salary cap and so will hope for medical retirement.

So they can sign James Roberts.

If Souths get him medically retired while we get stuck with Foran for another almost two seasons, I'll stop watching completely.

Inglis can play on, he just doesn't want to or it won't be at the same level.

Foran has been busted for years before we signed him and somehow the NRL rubber stamped a deal that huge for that long for a walking injury.

Foran likewise has had mental health issues, so why does GI's case get preferential treatment yet again?

For the record, it's sad to see GI end his career this way, no matter what people think of him. But in no way should Souths get any cap relief. Fuck I'm sick of rules being different for 5-6 clubs. The NRL is more rigged than WWE.

Apparently it's arthritis in his shoulder limiting his range...and mental health issues. Which is strange, given in Jan through March it was a "knee injury".

So knee injury, shoulder injury, mental health, alcohol problems. Take your pick.

Goodwin (33) has apparently quit Warrington effective immediately and is suspected to be rejoining Souths.

Souths have already been informed by the NRL they are unikely to grant medical retirement as all are pre-existing injuries. As a result they'll cop a $1.5 million salary cap hit if Grog is unable to play anymore.

NRL should not force Souths to carry Greg Inglis’ wage on salary cap
As South Sydney wait to see if Greg Inglis will play on or retire, it is yet another example of why NRL players earn every cent they are afforded.

And forget what Inglis’s potential retirement could mean to the Rabbitohs’ salary cap, support for GI’s personal wellbeing should be the only priority right now.

Everyone in rugby league says they want what is best for Inglis but let’s hope it goes well beyond next week’s headlines.

Wayne Bennett has granted Inglis extended leave this week as the champion struggles to come to grips with his uncertain future.

Make no mistake, there is a genuine concern that the 32-year-old may have played his last NRL game.

In no way is anyone at the club pre-empting what decision Inglis will make when he returns next week, or are they putting any pressure on him to make a quick call on his career so the club can move forward.

The Rabbitohs are privately hoping Inglis does return to the field and help them achieve their goals for the remainder of this season and next, after which he has already made a call on his career.

But the Rabbitohs also understand that this decision ultimately will come down to whether Inglis has the desire to continue playing, given the extent of the physical and emotional scars he has been struggling with for some time.

This is an extremely delicate situation for everyone involved.

For seven years now Inglis has had to play with severe knee problems, and the arthritis in his shoulder is said to be so bad that he can hardly lift his arm.

But the emotional toll the game has taken on Inglis is every bit as significant and concerning for those close to him.

The subject has been raised this week as to what this could mean to Souths’ salary cap given Inglis has this season and next remaining on his lucrative contract.

Inglis has earnt the right to be paid out every last cent he is owed.

And it is the NRL’s responsibility as much as South Sydney’s to make sure that happens without it affecting Inglis’s teammates.

Inglis has given his all to rugby league and if he decides to walk away he can knowing he will forever be one of the game’s greatest.

But if he does make that call to retire, the support has to be ongoing, and it has to go beyond financial.

Andrew Johns spoke recently of the battles he went through following his retirement and we have seen the sad situations involving Luke O’Donnell and Jarrod Mullen.

The reality is that you hear so many more stories of lesser-known players who have gone through similar struggles as a direct result of the emptiness that sets in after the football has gone.

Inglis stood as tall as anyone for so many years but the reality is he is only human.

For those close to Inglis, that is the major concern right now.

Not the salary cap. And not what it will mean to the Rabbitohs’ chances. They just want what is best for their mate.

No surprises this was written by the biggest pot plant journo around in Paul Crawley.

Inglis has has more chances then most in the game and had a few things swept under the carpet and they still want the rules bent for him one last time.

Fuck Souths and fuck Inglis.
