It should be Head to Head results.

The Sharks beat the Titans 38-10 when they played each other this season.

That should've given the Sharks 8th spot instead of the Titans playing an uninterested Warriors.

And if 4 teams finish on 30 points apiece (which happened 3 years ago) - then what?

Doesnst work as well with the way teams accumulate points here.

Works well in football, because very slim chance teams finish on similar points. Not so much in league where is virtually 2 points or 0.

Can't say I agree. For and against is more representative of overall season form/results.
