There's more to this resignation. I think NSWRL said to him you can have the job but a panel will pick the players and the coaching staff will be picked for you, no if's or buts so Fittler thought nup not having that he wants Gould but NSWRL said no.

his master plan of give it to turbo and mitchel had it's flaws, of them being injured
This is the root cause of NSW problems....
Thinking they can pick players who are not 100% ready and screwing the team up with the uncertainty until the very end.

Just rule them out at the time of team selection, pick appropriate replacements and spend the week working up a gameplan to win.

Too much attention was given on Turbo and Latrell and it cost them.

In contrast, Billy Slater immediately dropped Ponga and Cobbo the minute they weren't 100% ready to do the job.

I read he was on like $450,000 per year and was offered a one year deal at half the price and didn't get to pick his assistants so he threw a hissy and quit

Hoops: Freddy’s Gus request that stunned Blues... and the pay reveal that sealed his fate.

September 29th, 2023 10:01 am

The sticking point that led to Blues legend Brad Fittler quitting as NSW coach was Freddy’s request for a new two-year contract.

The Blues hierarchy only wanted to give Fittler one more year after six years at the helm including losing three of the last four series.

Fox League has been told Fittler even offered to walk away if the Blues failed to end the Maroons dominance next season and lost another series.

But the Blues powerbrokers baulked at Freddy’s request for a two-year extension and some of the other names suggested as his new crew.

It’s been well-documented how chief adviser Greg Alexander has walked away with the likes of assistants Danny Buderus, Andrew Johns and Paul McGregor also tipped to follow suit.

But when Fittler presented to the NSW Rugby League Board and pushed for Phil Gould to be his new chief adviser it caught a number of the Blues powerbrokers by surprise.

But with Fittler quitting it will now give the Blues the chance at a clean slate to find the best possible candidate available.

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart is one option guaranteed to have enormous support while Craig Bellamy, Ivan Cleary and Michael Maguire are other options.

The other major issue that led to a flare up was the NSW Rugby League told Fittler he needed to take a hit to his $450,000 plus a year annual salary.

Freddy is normally a composed character but took umbrage at the notion his wage was going to be cut.

The Maroons have seized on the Blues being in disarray by announcing Billy Slater has extended his tenure in charge of Queensland for another three seasons.

Freddy was awesome when he first started as Blues coach in 2018 but over the course of six seasons some of the team selections and bench rotations became increasingly erratic.

The Blues got a lot wrong and at times it felt like the coaching staff had become paranoid and sensitive to any form of media commentary.

If Panthers coach Cleary wins a third straight premiership and given son Nathan is one of the Blues best players then it makes sense if the Blues were to try and approach Ivan.

Raiders coach Stuart will also have huge support as someone who understands Origin as well as anyone having won series as a player and as a coach.

Bellemy has been there and done that and is already a head coach. Cleary is coach of the best team in the league and sticky is too focused on the faiders.

I can see maguire getting the gig

Won 3 series as a coach and had an illustrious origin career as a player . Definitely goes down as a Blues legend
Definitely a Nsw legend, yet glad he won’t be coaching. The games beyond an inspirational speech every now and then. Origin needs proper game plans with breakdowns of defence etc.

“Quit” the space cadet was sacked, $450k a year and his greatest contribution was getting the players “ in synch with nature” by training in bare feet.

I'd say, if the nswrl offered him a 1 year deal, they don't really have a viable alternative. We will have to wait and see now.

The new coach will have to be tactically in tune and or a voice that the players hear. Mal was a shit coach tactically but a voice. He was smart enought to bring in smart coaches to help with game plans even though he had the best team ever. Freddy had respect but not the game plan or game management skill which is surprising for one of the best 5/8 ever. No obvious names stand out , Sticky - Loz combo maybe, I would be looking for a combo system. An NRL coach with another for everyday runnings buy a former named player.
Cleary - Barrett is another combo

Agree. Didn’t he win the most recent game and lost game one in a freak accident. Think NSW being spooked by Billy’s ‘playing for our postcodes’ line.

NSWRL is run by clowns. Tigers organisation get ripped from pillar to post and it's crickets on the Origin front despite having superstars available in every position.

I am sick of the media running cover for Shittler and the NSW board of flops.
