Rewarded my 6 year old boy with a gift of his choosing and he gifted me with the reward of forever looking after his chosen fish.

We have a fantail, black moor, comet, guppies, cardinal tetras, several plecosaurus, shrimp, snails and 2 yabbies.
Everything seems harmonious for the 1 month everything has been setup. Until a couple days back 1 yabby, shortly after shedding destroyed a new plant right down to the substrate and then attacked and chopped off half the fantails tail.

Both events happened in the same day and I'm wondering whether it's a reaction to shedding or does my yabby get pms.

interested to view people's setup and whether anyone has yabbies that co-exist with other fish.

Bonus points if you can spot a shrimp in one these pics

I always wanted a fish tank because they're pretty cool, but never could be bothered going to all the trouble and expense. Worrying about which fish co-exist or dying every so often is one of the things that puts me off.

I'd love a saltwater setup with 2 lion fish, that's all.

I remember my Grand parents had a pond put the front of their house which had huge coy fish which was pretty cool. Wouldn't mind something like that.

Although a rich **** friend of mine has a crazy tank built into the wall with heaps of expensive fish and a little shark or piranha or something which all looks really cool. It cost him like 15-20k for the setup and fish though.. My daughter will be lucky if I get her a goldfish and a bowl of water. Fuck paying that much! Haha

I used to have 6 aquariums running at one stage. First thing that I think people should think about is to look at a site like aquadvisor.com which will basically give you an idea of how many fish should go in the tank and you have, what types will be serial killers if housed with others etc.

I've never kept a Yabby. But mostly because I worried that it'd be one of the aforementioned serial killers.

The other thing I'll say is that 7 plecos is going to be a huge hassle to keep the tank water clean. They're shitting machines and you'll need to do water changes pretty frequently to avoid poisoning everything. Maybe 2-3 water changes a week as they grow up. If possible I'd try to swap the plecos out with corydoras. They're actually less likely to spend their lives hiding and they won't foul up the water as much either.

But getting rid of the yabbies or getting a tank specifically for them would probably be a good idea.

I’ve had numerous goldfish. Wasn’t aware yet one of them kept eating the other ones. Sometimes overnight, skeleton and all no remains. He has tank to himself now

That's what Yabbies do.

You should find a specialist aquarium supplier and talk to them. They will tell you what types of creatures will get along with each other.
You need to keep the tank clean, and snails can help with that.

Get a good filter, and change the water periodically. Also keep the temperature stable, and make sure the tank is well aerated.

If you want to progress to exotic types of fish, you will need to upgrade everything. It is an expensive hobby. Rewarding, but needs constant attention. You can't go on holidays and expect the tank to look after itself.

Yup I learnt that the hard way as well. Yabbies as they get bigger one becomes dominant and destroys everything else.

You seem to have set the tank up nicely. With layering the fish.
Just let the ecosystem sort itself out over a couple months and it should settle into a nice rythem
