Well fellas I'm almost at that point and I'm a bloke who knows SFA about rings. All I know is that the Mrs wants yellow gold instead of white (even though I'm trying to convince her to go white), and I know her ring size, but not sure what I'm meant to be looking for in terms of diamond cut and all the other things. I know nothing about metal so I'm at a loss. Does anyone who's been engaged/married recently have any tips?

Thanks

Sidenote: Nasheed's input will be completely overlooked, so no need for his reply.

Firstly congrats man. Very exciting. Big step but definitely the best thing I have ever done!!

I went to a local Jeweller and had them design it. Bit more expensive but the quality is much better than the crap you get in the chain jewellers such as Michael Hill. As for cuts and stuff depends on what style your missus likes. Just keep in mind that whatever you get, you will have to find a wedding ring to fit which can be difficult (my wife ended up getting 2 wedding rings cause it looked odd with just 1 so the engagement ring is in the middle and a wedding ring either side- see photo below will make more sense!!)

Love the side note too. That being said I am sure Nasheed would have some pretty funny insights on the topic

Hey mate I proposed last year and got a custom ring made from these guys in Melbourne.

Had full dialogue with them about what I wanted and they sent me videos because i wasn’t able to physically look and it came out even better than expected. My fiancé loves it and they use the ring in a lot of their advertising now and it gets bulk comments.

Ask her about rose gold instead of yellow gold. Find out what rock she likes - diamond, sapphire etc. then you can judge what rock you get according to your budget.

Look at the design of the band and the cradle the diamond sits in aswell.

I had no idea when I started either.

Edit - also think about the shape of the stone and whether or not she’d like diamonds in the band aswell.

Thanks man.

I'm definitely going to a small jeweler as opposed to a chain as I'm sure I'll get a better deal. I'm willing to pay extra in order to have a better quality ring. I got the style of the ring in mind, but not sure what to look out for. I know there are codes when it comes to cuts in terms of how finely cut something is - but this is something I have no idea about. So the diamond in the middle is there but then there's something that I need to look out for in terms of how finely cut it is or how straight the edges are etc... and I'm not sure what needs to be done here.

Congrats Wahesh on taking the plunge, if it's any consolation I've been married for 34 years and still regret it.

A word of advice for the engagement ring, start small as you'll be expected to increase the value, size and sparkle of future bling.

Go safe with yellow gold, single diamond and include flowers, chocolates and dinner, maker her feel special and that'll make up for the smallish rock.

Thanks mate. Got the proposal planned, something unique. Hopefully there will be enough money left over from the ring to pay for it.

Congrats Wahesh. Taken you bloody long enough :grinning:

You may find most jewellers send off ring request ideas, re-builds etc to big wholesalers anyway.

My grandmother have me her engagement ring to use as ours and it had to be sent to Melbourne to specialist jewellers to be rebuilt.

Being a woman I can't imagine a guy being brave enough to pick a ring all by himself lol but I'm sure you'll have a good idea what she'd love.

My practical advice is make sure it has smooth edges all round and strongish supports for the stone bc the wedding band rubs against it and you can get a groove....but you haven"t mentioned wedding so that may not be of concern hehe

All the very best matey :grinning:

Firstly congrats, I just bought one for my missus and dropped 39k, 2ct, WG, 6 claw with paved diamonds 3/4 plus hidden halo and a personal touch, I included my birthstone within the inside of the band, which is really personal and no one does.

What you want to look for are the 4Cs of Diamonds - cut, colour, clarity, and carat. The actual band itself is easily made by the jeweller YG, WG, or Plat. Choose your style, solitaire, diamond-paved, look online see what you like, or what she likes and go from there.

Get a platinum band it’s cheaper than gold at the moment.

Yeah but that’s not really a big deal for a females. White gold also needs to be re plated after a while.
depends whos missus you're asking.

Here's a tip... Never tell the jeweller your budget. It's like playing poker with your opponent that can see your cards.

For instance if you tell the jeweller your budget is $10k, he will then try sell you a $3k ring for $10k... He will throw a $24,999rrp ticket on it to make you feel so good

Pick the ring, get an independent assessment on its quality then hit him hard on price. Pick the ring before price is discussed... It at least pick the stone..

From my experience a women wants at least 1carat, excellent cut, d-f clarity or better,

No girl wants a itty bitty diamond or a yellow looking diamond.

Pro tip: try find a quality diamond that is .98-.99 carat.. you will pay way less than a diamond that is 1.01 carat.. people just can't get through their heads if it's under 1 carat.. to the naked eye both will be indistinguishable and you have saved 30-40%.

Another PRO TIP:. @tonee understands this well..

Dont ever skimp out on an engagement ring.. ever.. I know it will hurt to the core to waste such money but it's a lifeline investment..

Think of it like this...

The girl gladly accepts the engagement ring, make sure she finds out how much you spent.. she knows it's too much but accepts it.. they think they have pulled the wool over your eyes .. girl 1 - you 0

But for the rest of your years, you can run out and buy yourself whatever you want without telling her.. When she gets all grumpy about it that's when you throw it in her face... Geez you didn't react like this when I gave you that $39k ring? Then the penny drops for them... You can just keep hitting home with this same message... You have the Mustang, motorbike, Rolex, trips to Vegas with mates... You 21- girl 1.. But honey you didn't react like this when I spent $39k on the ring?

Congrats and commiserations mate.
I went and had a look at rings without the future bride and found a jeweller who I liked.
Explained to him that I had no idea what I was after and that I'd bring the missus in to look at a new watch for me.
While we were in there one of his workers started showing her engagement rings and got an idea on what she liked. Made some jokes about it being too soon for that and left with my new watch.
Went back a few days later and they showed me the one she really liked so I bought it.
She said yes so it worked.

Nasheed here,
determine this chicks finger size. Steal her rings and take note if the size and either out it back or sell it on the streets of the area.
big difference in price or quality.
Lab diamonds are a bit cheaper because theres no africans getting killed trying to get them, and quality i virtually the same, although personally i like the authentic and 'blood sweat and tears' that went behind it
you cant go to belgium or somewhere for a xcheaper deal atm so thats out.

figure out te style you like, at the size you like, then shop around because some places are wayyyyy cheaper.
also you sound like you arent the best looking bloke so are you 100`% sure she will say yes?
if you order online you have a 30 day return period and that can be exploited to advantage (like the blood diamond africans) if she indeed does say no.
alot of other places will not offer a return, although some will do same day if u pay cash.
