Dragons to axe new recruit Ronald Volkman after shock medical reveal
Professional sport is a brutal place as one of the Dragons’ new recruits is set to be sacked a week after joining the club.

Fox League January 11, 2024 - 5:50PM

The Dragons are reportedly set to cut new recruit Ronald Volkman from the squad after a routine medical exam revealed he needs season-ending shoulder surgery.
Volkman’s one-year deal with the Dragons was announced just over a week ago, however according to News Corp his contract hadn’t been officially registered with the NRL yet. It’s believed it won’t be at all given the injury revelation.

It’s a crushing blow for the 21-year-old given he secured an early release from the two years remaining on his contract to sign with the Dragons. He relocated from New Zealand to begin training with the Dragons in Wollongong this week and was spotted in a yellow bib — which signals contact-free training. Volkman, who played five matches for the Warriors in 2023, secured a release from the final two years of the deal to link with St George Illawarra.

Volkman’s next move is unclear. The situation appears to be similar to Bulldogs recruit Siosiua Taukeiaho, whose two year deal was torn up after he failed a medical. He was signed as cover for halves Ben Hunt and Kyle Flanagan following the decision to deregister Talatau Amone’s contract after he was found guilty of a hammer attack.

However, it now leaves the Dragons’ halves stocks particularly low after the joint venture released Jayden Sullivan, who subsequently joined the Tigers
.

Dragons not having much luck, so early.

Poor kid. Gets out of a contract only to be denied another through injury. Surely he's better than Flanno

Bit of a dick move by the Dragons. Should have finalised their checks before getting Volkman to get out of his contract. But if Volkmann is good enough, he'll be thrown a rope somewhere when he's through his surgery/rehab

Na it's on his management, these dudes are making a killing just to send a few emails and they can't even do the basics. Whoever is his manager should be deregistered by the NRL.
As Cameron George said, the dragons should have shown due diligence. They had every opportunity to get him a medical before he arrived at training.

No it's on his management. He had two years remaining on his deal with the Warriors and his manager had that deal scrapped and shipped him off to the dragons to train before a deal was even registered. If Dragons do a medical Volkmann still doesn't have a contract thanks to his management.

I'm not saying his management are without blame. It's just a bad look for the dragons imo. Particularly given their stance on honouring contracts Re Hunt. The dragons have obviously encouraged him to the club, without doing a medical and are now gonna leave him high and dry because of their ineptness

Medicals are to protect the club and not the player. Dragons look dumb for announcing a deal that was registered but that's about it.

I'm not disputing either of those facts. The fact it's a bad look for the dragons was my point.
