St George Illawarra remain confident Josh Dugan won't be tempted to join Canterbury with the star fullback expected to pledge his future to the Dragons in coming days.
Dugan has yet to formalise a deal with the Dragons for next year despite the club helping to resurrect his career after he was sacked by Canberra.
Sensing an opportunity, the Bulldogs have made a late play for the NSW number one to cover for Ben Barba, should the current Canterbury fullback ask for a release to join Brisbane.
But it's understood Dugan will reject the Bulldogs' advances and re-sign with the Dragons on a healthy multi-year deal.
A Dragons official told Sportal that negotiations with Dugan and his management were ongoing but a decision was imminent.
Dugan was off-limits to the media at the side's training session on Friday morning but winger Jason Nightingale believes the 23-year-old will remain with the Red V.
"I understand he's pretty keen to stay and we're excited to have him," Nightingale told reporters.
"Other than him wanting to stay, he hasn't said it's been done yet.
"That's what you want to hear from a player that wants to stay and wants to be part of the club.
"Hopefully he seals it up. From what I've heard he's not too far away.
"He's had a great six months here and he wouldn't want to change all the positive things he's done since he's been here."
The Bulldogs have held discussions with Dugan about a switch to Belmore, which indicates the club is resigned to losing Barba.
Last year's Dally M medallist is mulling over a move to Queensland for family reasons, with his partner and two young children expected to move north at the end of the year.
And the Bulldogs view Dugan as the perfect replacement.
"He is a quality player that every club would like to have," Bulldogs chief executive Raelene Castle said in the Sydney Morning Herald.
"We obviously have an issue with Barba so we would be mad not to ask the question. That's as far as it's got.
"While he's (Barba) contracted with us, we continue to work through that. His biggest focus is getting his ankle right so he can play finals football."
With the Dragons to play the Bulldogs at WIN Jubilee Oval on Monday night, St George Illawarra officials are hopeful of announcing Dugan's re-signing over the weekend.
