THE NRL has today rejected the Bulldogs' submission to have two points deducted for illegally fielding 14 men overturned. NRL boss David Gallop told Bulldogs CEO Todd Greenberg of the verdict this afternoon.
The Belmore club will now have to gain leave to appeal to have the matter heard before NRL Appeals Committee head Sir Laurence Street.
The Bulldogs are expected to apply for leave next week.
"It was a major breach of the rules and there's little alternative given the circumstances than to deduct the points,'' Gallop said.
The breach occured in the dying stages of the Bulldogs round two win over Penrith, when skipper Andrew Ryan was inadvertantly called back onto the field as his team's 14th player. The Bulldogs then scored the winning try with an extra man.
