Poor bloke.

Sydney sandwich board activist Danny Lim has been arrested for offensive behaviour with witnesses making formal complaints over the force used to cuff the 74-year-old. The former local councillor was fined on Friday after three police officers arrested him at Exchange Place in Barangaroo about 9.20am. It's unclear what the offensive behaviour involved or who made the complaint. Video of the arrest shows an officer holding a sandwich board sign that reads: "SMILE CVN'T! WHY CVN'T?".

This blokes an idiot, he goes looking for trouble and when it finds him cries foul.

Where to start...

1. He was carrying a sign saying "Smile **** ... Why ****"...
2. Several people reported the offensive content to police (which is why they arrived).
3. He was asked several times to leave the area by security and refused.
4. Police attended and asked him to move on.. he refused.
5. Police then attempted to move him on and he resisted.
6. He was arrested, removed from the area, and given a fine for public nusiance/offensive conduct in a public place, and then released without charge.

School holidays and you have kids and tourists around... nobody wants to see that shit.

He needs to grow up.

Because doing that in public isn't illegal.. but carrying an offensive sign is. Besides the UPF have been heavily criticised already for their stupidity.

He's 74 and an idiot, that's what he is.

What happens when someone take objection to his sign, tells him to remove it, and a scuffle or fight breaks out?

That sign is not illegal and the cops using such force on a old bloke like that is ridiculous. He used similar wording in a sign before and a district court judge over-turned a prior conviction saying the average aussie wouldn't be offended by it, this is no different. I don't even know what you are getting at about some fight that never happened? it sounds like another one of your woulda, coulda, if my mother had balls she would be my father. I think a bunch of neo-nazis having marches on the beach and wherever else, there would be a far higher chance of people objecting and violence breaking out, than there would be with one old dude with a funny sign on a sandwich board.

No.... the sign IS offensive. Let's look at it another way. The sign is making a statement.

What would happen if you (or him) stood in that same spot and rather than wear a sign, as people walked past you said "Oi ****, Smile" or "Hey ****.... Smile"?

Pretty sure it wouldn't be long until someone fired back at you (or kicked your head in), or at the very least called police. If you then said the same thing to an officer of the law, you'd be arrested and fined for using offensive language in a public place.

Same applies here. Doesn't matter if it's spoken or written, it's offensive to a "normal person", and being conducted in a public place.

Put simply: the bloke is just a massive real life troll.

Re the previous incident, he got the decision overturned based on his "reasonable excuse" that the words were used as political commentary". Can't use that same reason this time given a) he's been warned previously; and b) it's not political it's just offensive.

Not withstanding but the judge that let him off is the same judge who:
- Sentenced a pedophile to 8 months for child porn offences (because he was a FIFO worker and low risk).
- Sentenced a guy proven to be encouraging acts of terrorist, exiting the country on a fake passport, and plotting a terrorist attack (with previous convictions) to 3 years (backdated), so he is free next month despite Feb 2017 sentencing.
- Did not jail a bloke for speeding through a red light and killing someone.

In short he's not of proper mind to be a judge.

It does seem pretty harmless in comparison. He could probably have gotten a much better reception if instead of writing **** he'd written buddy. But I agree the people who preach hate and racism should be looked on in a much harsher light than a 74 year old preaching a message for people to smile.

Q: Would the signs have got him in trouble if they simply said "Smile!!"
A: Nope

There is absolutely ZERO reason to use the word "****" on them other than to provoke a negative reaction.

Play with fire, get burned. Simple as that.

Meh. He's 74 year old and harmless.
I've seen this guy around a few times a couple of years back.

He appeared to be a kind hearted man to me?
All he was doing was asking people to smile and be happy and expected nothing for it.
