CHAMPION Storm halfback Cooper Cronk isn’t retiring and instead will become the hottest player on the open market after a bombshell announcement that he’s leaving Melbourne for Sydney next year.

The two-time Dally M Medal winner will end 14 years of service for Melbourne at the end of this season, bound for Sydney to live with fiancee and Fox Sports presenter Tara Rushton while almost certainly playing for a Sydney-based NRL club.

Cronk has the potential to become the highest-paid player in the NRL next year, with the Test playmaker capable of earning close to $1.5 million a season.

The announcement, due for 11.15am in Melbourne, will force almost every Sydney club to reassess their recruitment and retention plans for 2018, aware that a player of Cronk’s credentials could single-handidly transform their side.

In the delicate process of determining the future of their own halves, the Wests Tigers, Parramatta and Canterbury would undoubtedly be interested in Cronk’s bold move north.

The decision will also have huge ramifications for the Storm’s big three, including Cronk, Billy Slater and Cameron Smith.

The 33-year-old’s decision will start a countdown to the end of the most dominant fullback, halfback, hooker combination in the history of the game.

Cronk’s guiding hand to lead the Storm to victory over Penrith last weekendmeant he moved to third highest for wins in first grade with 214 from 306 games.

Smith passed Darren Lockyer in the same game to notch the most wins of all time by a player with 238.

This has been asked many times already and each time the same things get pointed out:

1) Storm wouldn't release him if he was signing with another club

2) Cronk publicly stated that he would choose to retire rather than playing with another club

Seriously, he'll be commanding $1,000,000 a season. We can't afford it.

One thing is for sure though, he's already signed with a Sydney club. He wouldn't have made this announcement otherwise.

Why? He'll be 35 next year. He's too old. Aren't people understanding this??

yeah as if he is available NOW, fuck that,

plus he will be asking 1.5 million/ year. If we wait 2 seasons and then he comes to us to collect his big pay check, we may look for future and sign a young quality half on less money.

when i say quality half i mean no Mbye or Brooks who have been a flop so far.

That's a big one. He made a big public statement recently about how he was planning to retire 'cause he didn't want to play with another club. I'm guessing that's 'cause Melbourne hadn't granted him a release at the time.

I'm guessing Melbourne granted him a release because they don't have to pay him out any of the contract.
