Bro, KE used to hate PC's and loved consoles, now his console is collecting dust.

Are they good for all types of gaming or are they more so for simulators?
KE is still around just on the Mr Invisible forum I believe.

Run triple monitors , play i racing hell let's loose many other games, connect more controls, between flight and race i think i have around 30 different controllers, yokes, throttles ,force feedback steering wheels ect that cannot be run on gaming consoles plus a full motion platform.
That's a few examples the list goes on though.
come on, who wants to set up half their house to play a $100 game..Xbox is more than enough. 3 monitors?

connect the Xbox to a big screen and it will thrash the computer for gaming.

Decent ones are around $800 for the cheapest, $1200 for good quality.

If it's for home schooling, I would suggest a laptop over a NUC. You can usually get a laptop for a little cheaper, it's portable, and you don't get the lazy psychological effect.

NUCs work well as a PC but their main job is to act as a media centre for your TV.

You also get the problem that the kids will associate the TV with play time/relaxation time. So it makes it much harder to concentrate if they're sitting in front of the TV when doing school work.
I bought a laptop several years ago on eBay. It wasn’t brand new, but it was near new and manufacture refurbished. It even came with a warranty. $400 Toshiba model with 1tb hard drive and DVD burner. I was more than happy. It still had the plastic on the buttons. Not a mark on it. Just look into manufacturer refurbished computers - you might be lucky and score a good deal.

what can you do more on a gaming PC than a proper gaming console like ps5 or xbox
Playing modded games is huge. I like to play a game properly then mod it up a bit and go crazy.

No it won't. Graphics, load time, prices, variety, upgradability. A gaming PC kills consoles
but why spend So much money on playing games? People spend $3-4k for a gaming computer to play a $100 game?

for the rest of the tasks a cheap chromebook matches it

After my mate asked me this question, I started looking around at cheap laptops..

I managed to score a chromebook brand new touch screen for $187 drive away. Was $499. I reckon it will do everything I need. I don’t play games (Xbox for that). When it comes next week I’ll post a review.

what else could you ever want?

Good or not depends on what u need it to be good for
A basic office machine, $500 might get u there. On the other hand my gaming rigs video card cost more than $500 by itself.

For word processing and browsing the web a cheap chromebook matches it. Not much else.

Chromebooks usually don't have enough ram to handle complex Excel files. Don't have the graphics processing power for full video editing or graphical design tasks. They're basically word-processing machines.

I have a powerful PC, and Xbox Series X and a PS5. I mainly use the consoles for gaming, but I do most first person shooter gaming on PC. Plus I play older games only on PC as almost all of them on console are locked to 30 frames per second. On PC I can usually play them at over 100 frames per second. And after playing games at high frame rates, you can't go back to 30fps.

Plus I use the computer for work stuff as I have an ultra wide 34 inch monitor, plus a 4k monitor on the side, which makes it easier to handle graphical design and construction design.

But I also have a 2 in 1 Dell Xps that I use as my daily driver for work stuff when I'm out and about.

Yeah, most of the real Office Apps like 365 require a pretty decent machine, like minimum 8Gb of RAM to run without pulling your hair out.

Sure there are other options like Google G Suite or Open Office but at the end of the day the MS stuff still reigns supreme.

With Windows 365 just being released that will change the whole desktop landscape for a lot of users. You buy a very basic thin client PC and then connect to 'your' PC in the cloud. But you will be paying a monthly subscription for that. Interesting times.

I understand if your job has demanding tasks such as graphical design or video editing, a purpose built machine is required. but for the majority of people, they are oversold technology they never ever need, they also becomes outdated, under utilised.

I bought an expensive i7 computer about 5 years ago, dedicated graphics, big clear screen, big drive. what did I use it for? Word docs and some internet, store photos, some basic bookkeeping. Sure it still works well today but you could get a cheap laptop to run with it today.

I could have gotten away with spending half back then.

I also have a Xbox, PlayStation etc, but even in lockdown, have not turned them on once .. gimme an old super Nintendo anyday. I like quick arcade games, 10-20 mins max, I don't know how people can sit there and play these long story games all night.

See if you're going to buy a gaming PC or gaming Laptop (AlienWare etc...) from JB then you're going to get ripped off. While there are not many of them around these days, if you can go to a little computer shop run by Asians, they tend to be the best ones. So the guy I bought my computer from charged me $1300 (or there abouts) just for the CPU and I thought that was a little too much because the computer I bought before that one cost me $780. I suppose all the new technology and inflation etc... drive the price. I'm happy with it though.

You don't even need a powerful rig for that: https://www.retrogames.cc/
