For word processing and browsing the web a cheap chromebook matches it. Not much else.
Chromebooks usually don't have enough ram to handle complex Excel files. Don't have the graphics processing power for full video editing or graphical design tasks. They're basically word-processing machines.
I have a powerful PC, and Xbox Series X and a PS5. I mainly use the consoles for gaming, but I do most first person shooter gaming on PC. Plus I play older games only on PC as almost all of them on console are locked to 30 frames per second. On PC I can usually play them at over 100 frames per second. And after playing games at high frame rates, you can't go back to 30fps.
Plus I use the computer for work stuff as I have an ultra wide 34 inch monitor, plus a 4k monitor on the side, which makes it easier to handle graphical design and construction design.
But I also have a 2 in 1 Dell Xps that I use as my daily driver for work stuff when I'm out and about.
I understand if your job has demanding tasks such as graphical design or video editing, a purpose built machine is required. but for the majority of people, they are oversold technology they never ever need, they also becomes outdated, under utilised.
I bought an expensive i7 computer about 5 years ago, dedicated graphics, big clear screen, big drive. what did I use it for? Word docs and some internet, store photos, some basic bookkeeping. Sure it still works well today but you could get a cheap laptop to run with it today.
I could have gotten away with spending half back then.
I also have a Xbox, PlayStation etc, but even in lockdown, have not turned them on once .. gimme an old super Nintendo anyday. I like quick arcade games, 10-20 mins max, I don't know how people can sit there and play these long story games all night.
