Run with me here ... We all agree Australia is the best place to live. But if we're honest, we're also pretty shithouse at certain aspects of being a functioning society.

When it comes to the following, we're pretty good.

Gun Reform : Back in the 90's Johnny Howard took the plunge and said "That's it c*nts, no more f*ckin' guns for you", and we all sheepishly said "OK" and sold them to the government. GOOD JOB .... NO mass killings ever since, and others look to us as an example.

Universal healthcare : For all the crap we hear about Medicare, we are the envy of many nations because we even have it in the first place. Pass out with a seizure on a pedestrian crossing in Australia, you get an ambulance to hospital and time to recover. Pass out with a seizure on a pedestrian crossing in Hawaii (like my mate Jeff did), and along with the ambulance ride and four day stay, you'll get a $20K bill that's not covered by holiday insurance.

Minumum wages / Penalty rates : Over here, we are built on the notion that every day has 8 hours rest, 8 hours work and 8 hours play. Jobs are a means to a lifestyle. Elsewhere, people have to work 2-3 jobs and half of our hourly rate AND require "tips" to pay bills. We have it right over here.

When it comes to the following, we're pretty shithouse

Alternative energies : I read somewhere recently that some country in Europe (Sweden perhaps) powered 97% their whole country for a day using nothing but clean energy (wind, solar, etc) .... WE should be kicking arse in this area.

Education : Just recently I learned that Chile has FREE university, and recently Germany decided to do the same. They'll achieve it by using corporate taxes to fund the costs of having uni and provide it for free .... WE should be doing the same.

So ... over to you lot.
Make this country better.

What do you like ?
What do you hate ?
What do we need ?
What should we adopt ?
Who does things swell ?

Skip, your input is welcome too.

Let me help by saying "focus on the issue/problem, not the people behind it" ... IF there's a "process" we can adopt that will improve the place, name it. If some society is doing something well and you like it, suggest it.

This way, there isn't any focus on "people", "races" or "types".
We'll simply be discussing "things".

Id release more land the property prices are stupid , sure national parks are cool but they dont do anything we need more organized city's not overcrowded ones , the transport system is a joke for commuters, a fast rail with speeds up to 350km /hr at least are a must for a country this size .
We need harsher laws to turn this country round.

As Southy said, release more Crown land to ease property prices but first we need a good way to stop foreign investors from snapping it all up. Australian property market is a joke. We keep putting blocks in place but foreign investors can still openly buy whatever they want with the right workarounds.

Internet is a big thing for me too. I'm not much of a Communist (Labor supporter) but their NBN plan was brilliant. Liberals decided to destroy that plan and force their own plan on us because they're plan will be cheaper and quicker. Now their plan is going to cost more than Labor's and will take longer to set up.

Renewables are another big one. Nuclear energy is a great idea for most countries but Australia has an abundance of room for Wind and Solar, plenty of sun and wind. The only reason we're not going for renewables (other than the baseline power problems) is that we are a major coal exporter. If we switch to renewables then it encourages others to do the same and we lose a major export commodity.

- Our entire Public Transport system is a joke. Go to London and see how an efficient train and bus system works.
- Our entire Road System is a joke.
- The average internet speed in this country is a joke.

All problems that could have been solved by Government, but pushed under the rug time and time again.

School and Uni should be free in this country period as should energy. All that coal in the ground yet we don't see much of it in return to the Australian Public usefully.

I agree our roads are a joke, Councils are too blame... Councils here do jack shit to be honest.

Or Japan ... we could learn a thing or two from their high speed rail.

- Our entire Road System is a joke.
Is that a symptom of public transport being inadequate ?

Elsewhere though : Germany has Autobahn .... we could make the world's biggest Autobahn !

Sydney to Brisbane in 7-8 hours.
Melbourne to Sydney in 5-6 hours.

Our wildlife would f*ck us up though I reckon ... ever seen what a wombat does to your lowered shitbox with a sports-kit ?

Problem with our cities ( major ones that is) is the fact that infrastructure improvements sadly do not keep up with population increase in those areas. Look at the problems Sydney has when there is major rainfall for example, not enough suitable and efficient drainage to cope as more and more of the open areas are converted to medium and high density structures; more people meaning more waste, more traffic meaning more traffic congestion, slower travel times etc. Railways are crap, energy grids becoming overworked; infrastructure does not keep up.

Wind and water plentiful but not used for renewable energy; Jacob shade correct when he says we are dependent on our exports of coal and not wanting to lose our trading partners.

I love this country for the freedom we have and its beautiful surroundings but a lot of the comments regarding other countries doing things better is spot on. We definitely could learn from others.

I have to shake my head sometimes,
I just knew it would be to much to ask of the kennel to possibly find anything positive to say about the very country we live in,

The japs are pushing mag lev trains that can just reached 603 km /ph hr while that train is not in service yet our xpts were pretty much were out dated when we got them in 81 with a top speed of 160km /ph that would be lucky to hit 80 an hour at best. .on the central coast we have something like 20,000 commuters a day which takes about an hour 17 mins to central. With the population increasing there is no reason why we should be this far behind
