And this is exactly why the rule allowing clubs to sign players a year before they're able to leave their current club is fucked. The situation should have been avoided. They're going to be creating an emotional tug of war for Burton. If they get in his ear enough he may have second thoughts and if that does happen we'll be painted as the bad guys for standing our ground. If he does decide he wants to stay I hope the club shows some backbone for once and says they're going to hold him to the contract.
WE CANNOT CAVE TO ANY REQUEST TO LET BURTON OUT OF HIS CONTRACT WITH US NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCES

So do I but how often does that actually happen? Deals are done and guess what? Most times the Dogs get screwed.

Penrith are fast becoming the most disliked bunch of wankers in league and that includes big heads like Fletcher. Gus Gould saved their broke asses...they were a basket case before he went there...now they think they’re some kinda super club

anyone would think they won last years GF

WTF is this thread? Did EVERYONE miss the fact we were publicly telling Burton to break his contract all off season?
In fairness though that's because they were playing duds like May ahead of him. Now he's cemented a spot in first grade I'm more than happy for him to stay... Rotting in NSW cup was the real issue.

From tonight's SMH:

The tug-of-war between Canterbury and Penrith over Matt Burton’s services is about to erupt, with Penrith chief executive Brian Fletcher admitting he wants to convince the young superstar to backflip on his deal with the Bulldogs for next year.
Fletcher has also backed the club’s decision not to release Burton to the Bulldogs this year, firing a shot at their western Sydney rivals by declaring, “It would have been the worst move for his career if we let him go”.

The Panthers feel Burton, who has starred in the centres the past month, is happy at the foot of the mountains and is having second thoughts about leaving the club at the end of the year despite signing a two-year deal with the winless Bulldogs from 2022.
“For his development and his future, he would be far better staying with us next year,” a forthright Fletcher told the Herald. “He’s a young bloke and his future would be assured here. He will keep climbing the ladder with us. I don’t know if that will be the case at the Bulldogs. One player can’t win games on his own.”

The Herald can reveal Panthers coach Ivan Cleary asked Burton not to rush into signing a deal with any club, urging the 21-year-old to wait and back himself over the opening two months of the season.
Had Burton followed Cleary’s advice, his signature would be the most highly sought-after in rugby league and would have likely demanded in excess of $700,000-a-season.
“If they are so concerned about his wellbeing they would consider letting him stay at Penrith.”
Panthers chief executive Brian Fletcher
Sources with knowledge of negotiations told the Herald Burton’s deal with the Bulldogs is worth $450,000 in 2022 and $500,000 in 2023, much more than what Penrith could afford at the time. Penrith would have to fork out at least that much to keep him and shed players in the process. It’s understood not everyone at the Panthers is comfortable with the idea of trying to convince Burton to backflip.
The NRL has scrapped the controversial round 13 backflip rule, which allowed Daly Cherry-Evans the chance to renege on the Gold Coast Titans in 2015, meaning Burton will need to convince Canterbury to release him - or make it untenable for him to join the club next year.

Doing so might be difficult given the strength of Burton’s relationship with Bulldogs coach Trent Barrett, who was a large reason why the Dubbo product signed with Canterbury in the first place.
A potential change of heart in the coming weeks, if accepted by the Bulldogs, could allow Canterbury to pursue the likes of Adam Reynolds and Shaun Johnson.

Canterbury major sponsor Arthur Laundy recently criticised the Panthers for not having Burton’s best interests at heart. The Panthers boss has now turned the table on the outspoken Laundy as Penrith celebrated seven straight wins to start the year.
“Canterbury’s leading sponsor was worrying about his wellbeing by us not playing him at the start of the season, but if they are so concerned about his wellbeing they would consider letting him stay at Penrith,” Fletcher said.

“We always had that under control. I think we’ve done a pretty good job with it. I think it would be our duty to have a further conversation with him. We should have the opportunity to re-look at his contract.
“They wanted him to break his contract this year and had conversations with him about it. We just want the same opportunity to have the conversations with him now. He’s only young. His career wouldn’t have gone ahead as far if we hadn’t looked after him and developed him.”

Gallen beats Browne by first-round TKO

The Penrith Panthers take on the Newcastle Knights in round 7.
Chairman Dave O’Neill was far more coy when pressed on the matter. “If things were to progress, it will make for an interesting retention and recruitment meeting the next time we gather,” he said.
While it’s unlikely the path will open up for him to play in the halves, given the form of Jarome Luai and Nathan Cleary, Penrith have always believed Burton can develop into one of the best centres in the game and had also discussed using him as a ball-playing lock.
Burton, whose form forced Stephen Crichton to right centre in Thursday’s win over Newcastle, has scored four tries in as many games since being brought back into the team in round three, one more than Canterbury as a team during the same period.

Like I said Penrith are starting to implode and are willing to butcher there roster to keep one player.

After paragraphs of BS the key to the article is he would need to convince the bulldogs to let him out of the deal which won’t happen.

Until Burton comes out and says he doesn’t want to come I’ve got better things to worry about.

asking for a release from the final year of your contract when you have committed to another club for the following year and when you are not in the top 17 and on minimum wage is very different to actively encouraging a player to renege on a longer term deal signed with a rival when it dawns on you that you have likely let a future rep player just walk out the door

they are not the same thing... that is why early releases happen far more often than players reneging on deals... one is opportunistic, one is dishonest

f*+# the Panthers

I read that as Penrith being salty and now trying it on. Nothing there says to me Burton wants to renege. All Penrith are offering him is 'it would be good for your development'. We're offering his preferred position, much more money and a liklihood of being a marquee player for us. He doesn't want to just develop for the next 2-3 years.

In addition, Penrith have no legal basis to hold on to him. The Bulldogs and Burton have to mutually agree to end the contract, it cannot be done unilaterally.

While the bulldogs cannot force him to play, they can get declatory relief in the Supreme Court that he fulfill the terms of the contract being that he play for the bulldogs or does not play for any other NRL club for 2 years (you legally cannot force someone to perform a positive act against their will).

Don’t stress guys, there is absolutely no way the club will agree to release him because that will be career suicide for Khoury, the board and Barrett.

I expect burton to be playing great footy for us next year bcos everyone wins (except for penrifff)...

If I were the bulldogs legal team, I would be considering the tort of attempting to induce a breach of contract....that is fletcher encouraging Burton to break the contract...

I’m not sure what damages flow at this stage but worth dragging Penriffff and fletcher through the courts just on principle and would allow Khoury to show all relevant stakeholders he’s got some big balls (if not for anything else)!
