I liken this to us losing JT, it has the same feeling only that this time we are the beneficiaries. Burton is special, no doubt about it :grinning:
What comes around goes around the karma bus has hit the Cowboys hard. Look at the juniors they have lost over the last few years Kikau, B Smith, Ponga and Horsburgh. It happens to everyone at some point.

Mansour wants 3 years and Tigers offering 2 apparently is why it's taking time to do a deal.

Panthers have shopped Whare around with no takers so if Dogs offered that you'd be a very good chance to get what you want with Burton. So a little pain for a gain.
At the right price and the right term Whare wouldn't be bad for depth - solid defender which is what good team's are built on & he would keep the pressure on the likes of DWZ, Meaney, Crichton etc for those positions up for grabs. Competition for spots in a team brings out the best in players.

True, but this is a blunder that will hurt the Panthers for the next 10 to 13 years. Just like the soar taste we had to endure every time JT's name was mentioned. Their loss will haunt them for a very long time and leave their fans saying what if??? Hind sights a beautiful isn't it, so you can't really blame them for carrying on.....Their loss is our gain, it has happened before and will certainly happen again but there is such a thing as being a graceful winner or in this case recipient. So let them have their whinge while we sit back with a smile on our face. :grinning: The Panthers have to be seen to flex their muscles if only for their fans and their clubs pride.

Penrith need Player Salary Cap relief, so paying a transfer fee doesn't help as it goes against the Football Operations Cap.

Some creative thinking required ........... I have always thought about another Club (itself or a sponsor) being the Third Party in a TPA with another club's player. For example, the Laundy's (or the Bulldogs Leagues Club) pay Mansour, say, $200k which Penrith use to reduce his 2021 contract (of course the player would have to agree). So Mansour gets the same amount and Penrith get a $200k reduction in their Cap. Make it $200k + $50k so Mansour is getting a sweetener. It's not included in our Cap or even our TPA's because he's not our player. Of course since it's us the NRL would probably say fark off, but I can't see how it breaks any rules.

Panthers are carrying on like they're the only team that loses juniors to other teams. Every team goes through it.
Yeah he's carrying on a bit but I do agree with him that the current system doesn't do much for clubs who spend time developing their juniors only for them to all leave. There should be some time of incentive/reward program, and that would fall under either financial or competitive incentive. A financial reward would be a fee paid by one club to another for signing their junior talent, where a competitive reward would be salary cap consessions for junior talent.

The first thing you'd need to do would be to classify what a junior player is. Clubs should only receive a reward where they have actually nurtured and developed talent and shouldn't just receive a reward because a player lies within their catchment area. There would have to be a certain critera that is applicable that would factor in the amount of time the player spent at the club, age etc. Perhaps something where the player spent a minimum years within the club's development system, and would only apply to players between an age range of 18-22.

Someone like Matt Burton, for instance, probably wouldn't count because he was playing in Dubbo up until 18 years old and only spent a couple of seasons within Penrith's development. But for someone like Nathan Cleary there should be an incentive because he's spent his entire junior footy career there. The system would have to be designed to stop teams like Brisbane who have an enormous catchment area from claiming all the junior talent within the region, which is why I think making it only applicable to players who have actually been in the club's development system.

Wow this article has sweet timing...

How loan deals could fast-track future signings

Under a concept suggested by the International Rugby League deputy chair Troy Grant, players who have signed with rival clubs in 2022 could switch to their new team a year early via a loan system that would benefit both clubs.

In this scenario, which he has not formally put to the NRL, Matt Burton could be loaned by Penrith to Canterbury next season and North Queensland playmaker Jake Clifford would be able to join Newcastle on a temporary basis.

Burton has signed with the Bulldogs from 2022 and Clifford will play one more season in Townsville before moving to Newcastle but their new clubs would be keen to take them immediately if they were able to secure an early release.

Wests Tigers prop Josh Aloiai is in a similar position and is demanding a release from the remaining year of his contract to join Manly but the club won't let him go unless they get a player of similar ability in return.

The idea of trading players is becoming more common in the NRL – Melbourne wanted a like-for-like replacement for Josh Addo-Carr when the star winger looked set to join the Tigers next season, before he committed to the Storm for next year.

A swap between St George Illawarra winger Jason Saab and Manly's Rueben Garrick was also proposed but fell through.

However, Grant believes a loan system would be much simpler and could benefit all parties involved.

"Super League have been doing it for a while, obviously the EPL does it and various other sports around the world have loan systems," said Grant, who was a member of the Project Apollo team responsible for devising a way to resume the Telstra Premiership on May 28.

"Baseball has trades from the major league down to minor leagues and the NBA does the same so I just think it is an evolution that makes sense for the NRL."

The NRL allowed the Warriors to loan players from rival clubs this season to enable the club to keep playing after relocating to Australia, while the Storm and Tigers were involved in a one-season player swap between Harry Grant and Paul Momirovski.

However, it is unclear whether such deals will become more commonplace in the NRL.

To enable a loan system to work effectively, Grant suggested the following rules:

  • Pro-rata payments from the club loaning the player to his employer;
  • Players could be recalled if needed by their original club; and,
  • Loaned players not allowed to play against the club they are contracted to.
"With a couple of simple rules like that I think it has got some merit," Grant said. "It keeps the best players on the park as much as possible. There is always the risk of injury but if they are going to play lower grades there is a risk of getting injured there.

"These are guys who are going in 2022 so that gives a club like Penrith, if they are going to loan Burton out, an opportunity to get eyes on the next player they are developing to replace him."

The Panthers have two other five-eighths rated ahead of Burton by coach Ivan Cleary in Jarome Luai and Tyrone May, while Clifford is vying for a spot in the North Queensland halves with Scott Drinkwater and Michael Morgan.

Clifford had initially asked for a release to join the Knights immediately and after being refused he signed with Newcastle for the 2022 season.

The 22-year-old playmaker's agent, Paul Sutton, has since told North Queensland officials he could help them get former Dragons captain Gareth Widdop from Warrington as a replacement for him.

However, Clifford remains a part of incoming Cowboys coach Todd Payten's plans and the club expects him to serve out the remaining year of his contract.

"It was one sentence from his manager and he got one sentence back in reply," Payten told RadioTAB. "It was basically 'I could get you Gareth for this price' and we said 'we don't have that money'. That was it."

Payten said that Titans recruit Tino Fa'asuamaleaui had played strongly for Melbourne last season, while South Sydney-bound forward Jai Arrow performed well for Gold Coast and the pair were members of Queensland's triumphant State of Origin team.

He expected Clifford would do the same.

Meanwhile, a resolution to Aloiai's dispute with the Tigers is expected before he is due to receive the next monthly instalment of his contract payments on December 1.

The Tigers are reportedly interested in a swap for Manly back-rower Curtis Sironen, who played for the club previously before joining the Sea Eagles in 2017.

Fair enough if the panthers were relying on burton to play, but he has 3 halves in front of him. Its selfish if they want to just keep him for the sake of it when he can go to another club, earn more money and get consistent game time in his prefferred position.

It’s a competitive sport if the shoe was on the other foot I would want the Dogs to be selfish.

Yeah but you got to consider whats best for the players future. You cant expect a player with his potential to sit in reggies for his career
