Love that highlight video.
As this is about favourite players - Geoff Robinson, Steve Mortimer - Robbo was a crowd favourite from the time he was in third grade.
Glad Gary Hughes gets a mention - he was bewilderingly slow across the ground but incredibly clever with the ball to the point of amusing - great to watch.
A player not mentioned - didn't play many games - regularly suspended n sent off - was Steven Hage - not so much a favourite more of an interest because he was so hot headed, waiting for him to do something crazy.
Good thread

There is no comparison for a halfback in a Dogs jersey.

This has to be the best highlights of a player ever !!!
For people that didn't see TURVEY play...Sorry you've missed out !!!
TURVEY'S Attack...
* Was lightning from dummy half and around the rucks and always everywhere in attack
* Had the fastest acceleration I have ever seen
* Had a side step like a wizard
* Best ever Kick and chase game, his general kicking game was off the top shelf
* Passing game often labelled 5 stars
TURVEY'S Defense...
Remember it was the 70's & 80's 5 meters rule, Turvey had a very small frame and was asthmatic, it limited his front-on defending but I tell you what...His cover defense was the greatest ever, it was normal for him to save tries week in week out
People rave about that 1 cover tackle in 2003 grand final by Scott Sattler
Turvey did 3, yes 3 try saving tackles in the 1980 Grand Final...
Sadly he doesn't get the praise and recognition that Sattler got and still gets !!!

Turvey was a absolute champion player
Even watching the 80s game terry lamb was the best support player. He was like a second fullback was always sniffing around and any time a break was made he was close by in support was our greatest half’s combo I also believe sherwins short kicking game was outstanding I think wherein deserved a origin jersey in that 02-04 period was the best half on form although he played in a time when there was good half’s around.

The highlights package only gives a flavour of just how good he was, and it doesn't have any of his cover tackles, which if put into a highlights package of their own would be considerably lengthy.

And another thing that all of this doesn't mention is just how good a leader he was as a player. He helped get the best out of the players around him, gave them belief in the team. This was perhaps most evident in 1985 when, though past his peak, he led NSW to their first Origin series win.

Warren Ryan was the sports master at Belmore BH and I was a student there
It was 1984, Canterbury had bought a halfback the papers made him out to be the next Steve Mortimer
I asked Wok if the papers are right in their predictions
His reply was...Are they kidding ?
There is no one like Steve Mortimer !!!

continued When Turvey is on the field his leadership and game plan execution is incredible for the full 80 minutes,
as a coach I feel like I am on the field !!!

I was born in 92, so my side is pretty much from around 2001 onwards as that's when I really started to take more of an interest in the game. Of course Lamb and Mortimer and players of that calibre are greats but this is just a different take.

1.
PATTEN (hard to split him and Barba, but the General wins due to his long service and reliability)

2. EL MASRI (El Magic needs no explanation, it took a while to get over his retirement. Conversions weren't the same until Hodkinson came along)

3. VAGANA (76 appearances for 61 tries WOW! One of the best movers the game has ever seen. footwork, agility, balance, game sense he had it all! what a player it's such a shame he wasn't in our 2004 side)

4. MORRIS (started his career with us in 09 and what a season he had, was an all round weapon until he did his PCL which slowed him down. Great servant to the club providing 10 seasons)

5. UTAI
(for today's game id have Rona over him in a heartbeat. But this stocky little beast was enormous for us in the early 2000s and we don't win in 04 without him, 2 tries and massive run from our own end in the second half)

6. ANASTA (110 appearances for us and scored 50 tries and had a win rate of 64.55% with us, pretty impressive. Just a shame how we lost JT for him...only for him to leave at the end of 05)

7. SHERWIN (shifty was a little champion, just oosed confidence and always backed his instinct, not like the manufactured 7s struggling today... We win in 2012 if we had a half like him)

8. O'MELEY (the ogre never took a backwards step, a true enforcer)

9. ENNIS (one of our most important leaders who dragged us from the ashes in 2009 onwards)

10. PRICE (solid captain who ate up the metres and always did his job, loved a chargedown)

11. SBW (blokes a piece of shit for what he did, but he's easily the best we've had in this position)

12. RYAN (cover tackle on Crocker in the 04 GF and served us well, ran a good line as well)

13. GRAHAM (in my eyes arguably the best middle forward we've ever had, soft hands and endless aggression and passion. It's a real shame what black friday did to him... and that he won't finish his NRL career with us, fuck you Klemmer and Woods)

14. REYNOLDS (came into grade mid way through 2011 and during that season he scored a fantastic try against Newcastle with 2 left foot steps. Got by on passion and his biggest asset was the energy he provided his teammates)

15. JACKSON (loyal and reliable, the bullshit walked over the years and he's stuck solid so much respect)

16. MASON (04 Churchill medallist and had some great years with us. Sadly turned into a journeyman...)

17. EASTWOOD (honestly didn't think this man would make my list, but when I sat down thought about it and watched some of his highlights it really brought back memories of how good he really was! Sadly his last 2 years where underwhelming and kind of overshadowed that, but the Beast at his peak was a real impact player)

Special mentions:
JT (always did a great job for us, just didn't play enough games to warrant selection over Anasta in the end)
Rona (50 appearances for 34 tries)
Barba (97 appearances for 72 tries)
Maitua (untapped potential, sadly we never got to see him at his peak imo)
Asotasi (what a player! played every game in our 04 season, one we really should have kept)

Players I left out because I didn't get to see enough of them as an ignorant young child lol. Watched brief highlights of them and they looked great, but they didn't really have an impact on me so I couldn't justify their selection
D.Smith (great stats for us and Brisbane one I wish I payed more attention to)
T.Norton (obviously played in 02,03 for us, but I just don't remember him that we'll lol. To focused on Hazem, Mason and O'Meley then)
Polla-Mounter (looked like a very likeable, energetic and tough player)

This list is of best players to have played for the Dogs, not necessarily best while at the Dogs (eg Thurston)

Ben Barba (best player in the whole comp 2012)
Brett Morris (best winger in the world at his peak)
Nigel Vagana (best centre in the comp around 2003)
Josh Morris (one of the best 2-3 centres in the game for many years)
Matt Utai (unstoppable when fired up like that try against the Roosters to win the match in 2003)
Terry Lamb (best support player I've ever seen)
Jonathan Thurston (legend) TIE WITH Steve Mortimer (legend, best cover tackler ever)
Mark O'Meley (could trample opposing players in both attack and defence. Never took a backward step from anyone)
Jason Hetherington (crash tackling hooker) TIE WITH George Peponis (virtually unstoppable from a metre out from the line)
Peter Kelly (man of match in Premiership winning team)
Bradley Clyde (considered the best player in the comp for a few years by many)
Sonny Bill Williams (most talented forward I've ever seen)
Jason Smith (Player of series from memory in State of Origin for QLD playing 5/8 just after Super League war)

RESERVES
Steve Folkes (regular test player for a few years, fantastic defensive technique)
Dean Pay (demon in defence but could ball play a bit also)
Peter Tunks (regular test team prop for several years)
Geoff Robinson (never seen a forward run harder with no fear that this guy)
