Going off Ennis' all time Bulldogs 17, got me thinking about my favourite Bulldogs players over the years, here's my 17 and why.
1. Luke Patten - safe and very underrated
2. Hazem el Masri - one of the greats
3. Josh Morris - Always put in for the jersey
4. Willie Talau - was a handful everytime he got the ball.
5. Sam Perrett - safe and solid player
6. Terry Lamb - nothing needs to be said
7. Brent Sherwin - one of the best not to play rep footy
8. Darren Britt - Carried the team
9. Jason Hetherington - hated him in a maroon jersey though.
10. Steve Price - Tough and had a big motor
11. Frank Pritchard - Instant fan favourite
12. Willie Mason - when he first came through on the edge, was a really good footballer
13. Jason Smith - tough, creative, always had time
14. Mark O'meley - as hard as they come
15. James Graham - skillful, competitive, brings the madness
16. Josh Jackson - Will go down as one of the best club man, all heart, leads from the front.
17. Craig Polla Mounter - hell.of a footballer, played above his weight

Chip and Chase.
Cover defending opponents into touch.
Never say die.
Leader.
Champion.

So lucky to have witnessed that era in the 80’s. I remember Turvey coming on in the 88 GF with his nearly recovered broken arm heavily strapped - but he was always going to have a run.

Although winning the comp was awesome, a sad day watching Turvey retire.

Great team mate, well done.
The only change I’d consider would be Chris Anderson for Brett Dallas.
Otherwise totally agree :-).

Like this team if I'm honest. Going further back I think there are better players than this, but it's good to keep it current so all the fans can talk about it :grinning:

I'd have Barba ahead of Patten. Of course Patten was super reliable, but I think sometimes people forget how great Barba was defensively at his prime with us. He was really good.

I'd put Utai ahead of Perrett. Know Sam was good, but ... Utai man :grinning:

Personally I'd put Polly in front of Sherwin. Realise Shifty was technically better, and had some magic in him but love Polly so so much as a player. Just an absolute mentality monster. Tough as nails. Wasn't afraid to lead from the front. Everything a Bulldog would want to be.

Pack. Superb. Think you've nailed it there, and the bench also.

Yes. Turvey there's no comparison. Absolute class. Absolute class. And a Bulldog through and through even till this day.

When you've been on this planet for 71 years, you see a lot more players in that time, and it is too hard to select an absolute best, because many players were of their day, and comparisons aren't on an even playing field.

Player that impressed me over the years have been:
Les Johns, Garry Dowling, Greg Brentnall, Ben Barba
Steve Mortimer
Terry Lamb
Kevin Ryan, Willie Mason, David Gillespie, James Graham, Merv Hicks, Peter Tunks, Travis Norton, SBW, George Taylforth
Nigel Vagana, The Morris twins, Chris Anderson, Sam Perrett, Matt Utai, Hazam el Masri, John Rhodes, Johnny Greaves.

Some are just personal favorites, and I couldn't build a team around them. Any would fit well into a Bulldogs all time top side.

Wow, there’s a lot of names there from my youth, Johnny Greaves a policeman during the week and a world class centre on the weekend. Johnny Rhodes, playing outside of him, so fast and with a sidestep to make a Langlands cry (Belmore oval 1967). Merv Hicks, OMG I couldn’t understand a word he said with his thick Welsh accent. When he finished playing, if I remember rightly, he bought a pub up on the central coast. Greg Brentnall, that guy could kick a football a mile, ex Aussie rules, he kicked the ball so hard I could hear the thud from the sidelines at Belmore. I’ve never heard anyone kick the ball so hard, before or after.

Greaves and George Taylforth were amongst my favourite players. Taylforth was our goal kicking forward. I've seen him land goals from over halfway.

There was an urban myth about him kicking the longest place kick in history, when the ball sailed out of Belmore Oval and landed in a freight train on its way to Bourke.
Only red rattler trains went past the oval when the Berries played; freight trains turned right after Campsie and headed to Enfield. And no freight trains to Bourke originated out of Sydney - but it's a fun tale to tell.

I saw Taylforth kick a goal from our side of halfway at Belmore, there was a late afternoon light southerly so it had a bit of wind assistance. But it must have 55 metres plus, the old toe pokers on a bucket of sand weren’t as accurate but they got the distance.

I only remember seeing red rattlers, they used to stop and watch the game, then move on.

No doubt a great player, but, I didn't see him play, I've seen highlights but not enough for him to be included as one of my favourites.
It's not meant to be an all time greats type of thing, just my favourite players somehow crammed into 17.

Both great players and players I watched. It's just my favourites, not an all time greatest team.
